The vertical red bar and upright position of the trident, Symbol of the Sea power, Stand for the Vertical Launching System of CG-58. The Striking power of this ship and its Aegis Weapon System are symbolized by the trident'S three prongs which stand for air, Surface, and subsur- face capabilities. The Stylized Sun in base is taken from the Philippine flag and reflect the location of the World War II battle. CREST: The World War II American victory at the Battle of the Philippine Sea will be remembered as the Mariana's Turkey Shoot . Over 80 percent of enemy forces were destroyed at little cost to friendly forces. The rays allude to this heavy air fire and the World War Il Japanese naval ensign. The anchor and wings, together with nine rays, commemorate both the Battle of the Philippine Sea and the Aircraft Carrier CV-47, which except for time out to re-arm and make repair, was continually in action and received nine battle stars for its service in the Korean War.

USS PHILIPPINE SEA SHIP'S MISSION PHILIPPINE SEA is equipped with the most advanced naval weapons in the world. AEGIS, a computerized, quick reaction air defense system, provides extraordinaiy capabilities against attack- ing aircraft and missiles. The heart of the AEGIS system is the SPY- lA radar which automatically detects and tracks virtual- ly everything that is flying out to beyond 200 miles. PHILIPPINE SEA also has the most advanced underwater surveillance system available today. Our trio of anti- submarine warfare IASWJ equipment consists of a hull mounted sonar, acoustic array sonar which is towed like a tail behind the ship, and a helicopter that can fly out to locate ships or sub- marines over 100 miles away. PHILIP- PINE SEA's vertical launching system can launch both the long rang surface- to-surface TOMAHAWK cruise missile, and the Standard surface-to-air missile. Two five inch gun mounts are used against threatening ships and boats or to bombard shore targets. Propelled by powerful, quick response gas turbine Uetl engines to speeds in excess of 30 knots, PHILIPPINE SEA is a force to be reck- oned with, always ready to stand in harm's way with Eternal Vigilance.

l .4 , The son of a career naval officer who participat- ed in the battle of the Philippine Sea aboard USS PRINCETON ICVG-231, Captain Becker graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned an Ensign in 1968. Captain Becker's first assignment was to the USS WEDDERBURN IDD-6841 where he served as First Division Officer and Combat Informa- tion Center Officer. Subsequent assignments were Officer-in-Charge of a PCF Swift boat engaged in riverine operations during the Viet- nam conflict, Navigator and Combat Informa- tion Center Officer on USS SELLERS IDDG- 111, Operations Officer on USS WILLIAM C. LAWE IDD-7361, Engineering Officer on USS FORT SNELLING ILSD-301, Executive Officer on USS MCCANDLESS IFF-10841, Command- ing Officer on USS ANTRIM IFFG-201, and Sur- face Operations Officer on the staff of Com- o Commanding ifieer John J. Becker Jr. Captain United States Navy Ulf' H374 M? mander Carrier Group Six. Captain Becker assumed command of the PHILIPPINE SEA in June 1992. In addition to these sea assign- ments, Captain Becker served as an intelli- gence analyst at the Defense Intelligence Agency and as Executive Assistant to the Chief of Naval Education and Training. Captain Becker is a graduate of the National War College and the Naval Postgraduate School with a Masters of Arts degree in National Secu- rity Affairs. Captain Becker has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and various campaign and service awards. 2 6 NL. , fl' !
