THE PRESIDENTS MESSAGE PHILANDER SMITH COLLEGE IN THE 70S Philander Smith College, officially founded in 1877, continues to be a College of Service and Distinc- tioni' with full accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. As we face the challenges of the 70s, Philander Smith aims: ' To be a first-rate four year college, with standards of excellence in fulfilling the primary objectives of higher education. ' To make quality programs in higher education most helpful to both the disadvantaged and the advan- taged students. ' To reduce student attrition by providing individually prescribed instruction, financial aid, and efficient services to students. ' To develop and expand cooperative education, wherever feasible, with experimentation and innovations that will facilitate the maximization of each student's greatest potential to live abundantly and to make an abundant living. ' To encourage more inter-disciplinary cooperation in academic programs of the college. ' To continue the pre-professional programs: Dentistry, Engineering, Home Economics, Medicine, Minis- tryg Pharmacy, and Social Work. ' To offer the Bachelor of Arts degree fB.A.jg and Bachelor of Science degree fB.S.l. ' To improve and upgrade the faculty by providing opportunities for enrichment through advanced studies, specialized research, workshops, et alli. ' To perpetuate progressive self-stydy and self-improvement in all areas of the College as Philander Smith faces the challenges of the 70s on the campus and in the larger community. ' To promote student oriented activitiesf' including athletics, concerts, drama, special programs, and stu- dent government. ' To add the latest books of value to our 62,750 volumes that are already on the library shelves. ' To provide a wholesome environment for fellowship, study, teaching, and learning. ' To go forward together. Philander Smith's 670 students represent grade averages that range from CN to straight A. Regardless of a studentls academic average, he should experience continuing intellectual stimulation and growth if he continues his education at Philander. Philander Smith College, which has had 94 years of experience in helping disadvantaged peoplef' must continue this kind of service for obvious reasons: ' Twenty-five f25'Znj percent of the entering students come from families of eight Q81 or more children. ' Twenty-eight 128711 percent of all students at Philander Smith come from families with an income of less than 33,000 ' Only 107: expect the parents to be their main source of financial support. a Students at Philander have come from 36 states and 6 foreign countries. In addition to a student's academic evaluation, the president, the faculty, and staff consider what each stu- dent may become if given a fair chancei' for growth and development. We believe higher education is the master keyv to economic empowerment and personal fulfillment in a democratic society. Higher education will bridge the gap between what a student is and what he is capable of becoming. Walter R. Hazzard President
