Rhonda Turner . . . .Roy Johnson Carl 'Wamble ,Ion tyle Robinson Thinking a random survey might be appropriate for the man of tests, measurements and research, we stopped four gentlemen in the hall of the Administra- tion Building. One of the men was white, one was black. one was Jewish and the fourth was an American Indian 7 now that's random. We asked what they thought of Dr. Crawford J. Mims, and they answered in turn: He's a real nice guy. A beautiful Cal, man. A mensch he is already. But the Indian said, Ughl Not even Dr. Mims wins 'em alll Still he wins as many as he does by listening with feeling to students and faculty: by always arguing ideas, never personalitiesg by doing more jobs than most of us do and complaining less for not at alljg by doing it well. He was such a good teacher, we hated to see him leave the class- room and hope he will be back, yet, he's an obvious choice for more administrative responsibility. Why? Because only a person of character could act as a buff- er between students and faculty, faculty and administration and still keep his friends on all sides, but Dr. Mims continues to accomplish the feat. How? By deep caring and controlled reason no matter how emotionally charged or irrational the situation. Oh yes. and he never remembers an affront - how many of us can say that? . . . . a moe guy . . . a beautiful cat . . . a mensch . . . HOW! Goodwin Secretary THE PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Philander Smith College, officially founded in 1877, continues to be a College of Service and Distinctionl' with full accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. As we face the chal- lenges of the 70s, Philander Smith aims: ' To be a first-rate four year college, with standards of excellence in ful- filling the primary objectives of higher education. To make quality programs in higher education most helpful to both the disadvantaged and the advantaged students. To reduce student attrition by providing individually prescribed instruc- tion, financial aid, and efficient services to students. ' To develop and expand cooperative education, wherever feasible, with experimentation and innovations that will facilitate the maximization of each student's greatest potential Lo live abundantly and to make an abun- dant living. ' ' To encourage more inter-disciplinary cooperation in academic programs of the college. ' To continue the pre-professional programs: Dentistry: Engineering: Home Economics: Medicine: Ministry: Pharmacyg and Social Work. ' To offer the Bachelor of Arts degree fB.A.lg and Bachelor of Science de- gree fB.S.l. To improve and upgrade the faculty by providing opportunities for en- richment through advanced studies, specialized research, workshops, et alli. To perpetuate progressive self-study and self-improvement in all areas of the College as Philander Smith faces the challenges of the 70s on the campus and in the larger community. To promote student oriented activitiesf' including ahtletics, concerts, special programs, and student government. add the latest books of value to our 62,750 volumes that are already library shelves. provide a wholesome environment for fellowship, study, teaching, and learning. To go forward together. Philander Smith's 670 students represent grade averages that range from C to straight A. Regardlesss of a student's academic average, he should experience continuing intellectual stimulation and growth if he continues his education at Philander. Philander Smith College, which has had 94 years of experience in helping disadvantaged people, must continue this kind of service for obvious reasons: Twenty-five 125721 percent of the entering students come from families of eight f8j or more children. ' Twenty-eight 12820 percent of all students at Philander Smith come from families with an income of less than 353,000 Only 10'Zp expect the parents to be their main source of financial sup- port. ' Students at Philander have come from 36 states and 6 foreign countries. In addition to a student's academic evaluation, the president, the faculty, and staff consider what each student may become if given a fair chance for growth and development. We believe higher education is the master key to economic empowerment and personal fulfillment in a democratic society.
