Dr. Williom D. Andrews, Deon of Foculty THE CFFICE OF THE DEAN CDF FACULTY TO THE CLASS OF 1982: lt would be nice to report to the Closs of 1982 thot the world is getting better. You're too smort to believe thot. Economic problems ot home, tensions obrood, ond o generol sense of helplessness obout the future felt by mony people oll suggest thot these ore not the best of times. On the other hond, you ore too smort to believe thot these ore the worst of times. Whot we see outside ourselves is to o lorge degree dependent on whot we feel inside. To every groduoting closs the world ossumes on imoge thot is os much o projection os o reflection. lt notionol ond internotionol oftoirs lools complicoted ond unpleosont, perhops thot's in port be- couse of how we view them. Nothing outside us gives due couse to regord the contempo- rory phose of civilizotion os ony better or worse thon eorlier phose. The lsey is our ongle of vision. l Suggest thot your own ongle of vision be both direct ond peripherol. Lools or the world directly ond cleorly, seeing its evil os well os its good. Don't be ofroid to see whot's there - ond to lobel it for whot it is. But lools peripherolly, toog see the foolishness, the inconsistencies, the inherent obsurdities, ond the humor. lf there is one thing your college experience should prepore you for beyond o coreer, it is the obility to see whot's oround you. But molse sure you see it oll, ond see it from more thon one ongle, I thinle you'll be surprised ot whot you see. l-loppy looking! And good luclsl Williom D. Andrews Deon of Acodemic Affoirs back, Ms Kote Britt, Assisronr to the Deon of Foculty Ms. Ruth A, Roftery

THE GFFICE 0F THE PRESIDENT It is a pleasure to offer congratulations to you, the Class of 1982, and to wish each of you health, success and happiness as you leave PCTGS. The opportunity given to me to be associated vvith students over the years as Director of Admissions and Placement, Dean of Students, VP. and Dean of the College and most recently as President is an exper- ience I shall always treasure. lt has been a rare privi- lege to have lsnovvn so many fine young men and women. My only regret is that in recent years time has not permitted the close relationship vvith students that I formerly enjoyed. Life styles change but students today seem little different than those three decades ago. l-lair styles go from short to long and short again-jeans become the uniform of youth - the preppy lools returns but stu- dents have the same aspirations, hopes and fears as those of yesteryear. Commencement is a beginning - the entry to a new era and new phase of your life. Understandably graduates approach this time with a mixture of enthu- siasm, confidence and some apprehension. The nevvs media which apparently thrives on controversy, catas- trophy and prophets of doom would have you be- lieve that the world is heoded for disaster. Having heard this before I suspect that the future is much brighter. Many other graduating classes have faced critical times and not only survived but prospered. l trust so vvill you.
