BERTFIAND W. HAYWARD B.S.g LL.Dg M.A.'g Ph.D. president of the college ln an age when some college students think the mur- derer, Ho Chi Minh, the professional bandit, Che Guevera, and the warlord, lVlao Tse Tung, form a holy triumvirate and find agreement among some college professors, and when, as the Wall Street Journal re- cently editorialized, parents find sons and daughters fools incapable of distinguishing between Lyndon Johnson and Adolf Hitler and when people cannot seem to see any difference between the treatment of American Blacks and the Russian Czar's treatment of the Poles, it is no wonder people find some diffi- culty in developing dialogues with monologists. Strangely, technological students seem more accu- rately informed, act with greater restraint and win- now fact from myth better than some who are pre- sumed to be studying the liberal arts . I think, if the world is to survive, we must, for our de- cisions, look to evidence rather than intuition, history rather than myth, reason above emotion. If this is so, leaders of colleges such as ours could be the leaders of tomorrow.

f. 159.- Fifteen years hence your generation will be influential in determining the kind of society in which we live. I hope that your generation will be more successful than mine in main- taining its idealism, its concern for human values, its insistence on doing what is right and will work to build a new society free from war, free from poverty which has as its prime con- cern, respect for human dignity. Best of luck to you, the Class of 1969. DONALD B. PARTRIDGE Vice-President and Dean of the College
