As a result of this situation, there arose a need for a fraternity expressing the interests of the Business students on campus. lt became apparent that Delta Sigma Pi would best satisfy these needs. Underthe direction of the Director of Placement at our college, Mr. H. Lawrence Laupheimer, the first steps toward bringing Delta Sigma Pi to our campus were taken in the Fall of 1967. Mr. Laupheimer suggested to Michael Whitmore and David Gingras that they might look into the possibil- ities of organizing a local chapter. Mr. Whitmore and Mr. Gingras working togethertook the initiative in acquiring the information concerning Delta Sigma Pi. The first meeting open to all interested stu- dents was held on December 29,1967. From the attitude and assemblage of students attending this meeting and a number of general meetings that subsequently fol- lowed, it became apparent that now was the time for the establishment of a business fraternity at Philadelphia Textile. A representative group approached Professor R. C. Bokum, who is an alumnus of Delta Sigma Pi, seek- ing his advice and counseling. Following the sugges- tions of Professor Bokum, this group chose a guiding committee to co-ordinate and direct the participating members into a cohesive functioning unit. On January 15, 1968 we were privileged to have Mr. Ben olfenberger, the present Executive Secretary on the rand Council of Delta Sigma Pi, preside at one of our eetings. At this meeting Mr. Wolfenberger explained he ideals and purposes of Delta Sigma Pi. Mr. Wolfen- erger also thoroughly outlined the requirements and rocedu res of a petitioning group. His visit further stimu- ated our group and the real work of establishing a chap- er of Delta Sigma Pi hereby began. n February 9, 1968 the question of submitting a petition as brought up in front of the group for a vote. The vote as unanimous, and on this day this diligent group be- ame recognized on campus as Beta Alpha Tau. he executive officers were elected at a general meet- ng held on February 12, 1968. The members voted on the following offices: President, Senior Vice-President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, Chancellor, and Historian. These positions were filled by: J. Michael Whitmore, David Gingras, John DiSepio, Albert Mandia, Edward Willis, Bruce Macauley, and Robert Reber, re- spectively. As a result of the efforts of both the Professional Com- mittee andthe executive officers, a number of vocational activities were organized. The first of these being a lec- ture by Mr. Gerald Moore, head of the Catalog Division at Sears, took place on March 8, 1968. Shortly thereafter on March 13, Mr. Morton Kalins, from the brokerage firm of W. E. Hutton, gave an excellent lecture on the price vari- ations in the stock market. On March 28, 1968 a well- planned trip to the DuPont Company was made by mem- bers of Beta Alpha Tau. This trip was made possible through the efforts of Professor Horace Townsend, As- sistant Professor of Marketing. Encouraged by the inter- est demonstrated by the members, the Professional Committee arranged to have both Mr. Heebner, the Vice- President Economist of the Philadelphia National Bank and Commissioner Deussing of the Federal Mediation and Counciliation Service to speak at Textile. Mr. Deuss- ing was so well accepted by the group that the Chairman of the Professional Committee arranged to have him re- turn in the future. Mr. Deussing suggested that it was possible to bring back with him a number of other media- tors and that they might put on a mock mediation and discussion with Beta Alpha Tau members participating. Beta Alpha Tau originated a social function on the last weekend of April, 1968. The purpose of this affair was two-fold: first of all, it was needed to acquaint the mem- bers with the brotherhood aspect of the fraternity. Sec- ondly, this affair would help cultivate the friendships that existed among Beta Alpha Tau members. As of the first of May, 1968, the rolls of Beta Alpha Tau in- cluded 90 active members. Through their efforts, a peti- tion was submitted to the central office of Delta Sigma Pi. In August, the petition was accepted and a charter for Eta Xi chapter was granted. On November 23, 1968, Eta Xi was initiated with 54 founding brothers and 10 honor- ary brothers.
