student council Student Government is cen- tered in the Student Coun- cil. This body is responsi- ble for the general super- vision and coordination of student affairs and activi- ties. Student Council rep- resents the student body before the faculty and ad- ministration and provides a channel for communication between these three sec- tors ofthe campus. A major function of the Council is control of the budget for s t u d e nt activities. Each class elects a President and f i v e representatives w h o constitute the membership of Student Council. Four standing committees a re appointed by Student Council to carry out specif- ic operating functions. The Orientation C o m m i t t e e plans and supervises the orientation and hazing ac- tivities for freshmeng the Elections Committee super- vises all election activitiesg the Social Committee or- ganizes all Student Council- sponsored entertainment, including Winter and Spring Weekendsg and the Student Betterment C o m m i tte e, composed of students and fa c u I t y, investigates and m a k e s recommendations fo r campus improvements in all areas concerning stu- dents. The Classes of '69, '70, and '71 have started a move- ment organizing Class Councils that operate sepa- rately to provide activities and a voice for their re- spective classes. The Coun- cils do not compete in any way with Student Council, but rather add to the pro- grams of the individual classes and help to pro- mote a sense of class iden- tity.
