Ward France, our recently retired Dean of Faculty. Mr. France, head of Yarn Manufacturing at PCT8zS since 1935, was graduated in 1920 from Pennsylvania State College with a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering. In 1922 he completed the Wool 8: Worsted Course at the Philadelphia Textile Institute. Mr. France's experience in industry has been extensive. He has held positions as a textile machinery salesman, overseer of a mill depart- ment, and superintendent of several mills. He has written numerous magazine articles and has often addressed groups and organizations on the subject of textiles. Also, he served on a team sponsored by the government to investigate German textile education. Mr. France has contributed unselfishly of his time and knowledge during the many years that he has been associated with textiles. He has been, and will most certainly continue to be, a great asset to the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. V l Dr. Bertrand W. Hayward has been President of our College since 1947. During that time, he has been awarded several honorary doctorate degrees. Prior to this, he received -his B.A, at Colby College, and went on to acquire his M.A. from Columbia University in 1941. He is associated with many prominent textile organizations, and his writings have appeared in numerous magazines and journals. Both the textile industry and the educational world recognize Dr. Hayward as a man of outstanding knowledge and ability. Learning after graduation is acquired completely from your own initiative. College is only an intro- duction to learning. If you have acquired knowl- edge, skills, improved habits and attitudes, improved self-discipline, and if you enjoy organizing attacks upon problems and finding solutions, your battle is well begun. It is a battle you can never really win, but you must always act as though you can. To continue to learn is to continue to live. 23.a'z.'2afLfA:4! 6 I Our new Dean of College is Donald B. Partridge, who was formerly our Dean of Stu- dents. Dean Partridge received his education from Bates College and Harvard University. He has been at PCT8cS since 1948. Before that, he was a teacher and director of several New England high schools. Dean Partridge is an active member of outside organizations such as the Masons and the Kiwanis. He is well known for his association with several pro- fessional guidance organizations. An assistant Secretary of State recently pre- dicted 'a great future for complexityf Most of 'di f' ' - ive. .1 today's problems are complex whether in the field of science, textile manufacture, social science, or international affairs. To such prob- lems there are no simple answers, if indeed there are any answers at all. You as educated young men and women should reject pat and simplified answers to complex problems and realize that you are most often nearer the truth in realizing the complexity of a problem and furthest from the truth in over simplifying a problem to arrive at an easy answer. Best of luck to you in a complex world. rafmafarax MOTT R. LINN Director of Adfniniorzx i P R I WALTER F. HARRIS Builclifzgf Sujlerintezzdefzl RICHARD S. V KECD Kappa Sigma Phi Virginia Arnott, Mary Cobb The first chapter of the Kappa Sigma Phi Sorority was begun in October, 1943 at the Philadelphia College of Textiles 8: Science. New Chapters were formed at the other textile colleges, making Kappa Sigma Phi, Alpha Chapter of a national organization. The purpose of the sorority as stated in its constitution is to join in fraternity, women of like interests in the textile profession with a common desire within, for the ' exchange of knowledge and encouragement of fine ideals and sincerity. This year Kappa Sigma Phi held its annual tea for all the girls and sold book covers. Each year as more girls are admitted we hope to bring in speakers from the textile S 'industry and to pledge ourselves to the task of enlisting the interest of other women in this profession. f . ,if -' 'L. 5. ,Q ' V, Ing, H-Q '1, ' 0 3.4 K. - .4 ,J .F - . , , ,-. Zap! Delta Kappa Phi Fraternity, the oldest textile fraternity in the nation, was created in 1899. For 64 years, Delta Kappa Phi has supplied the industry with capable textile leaders. The leadership factor is just one of Delta's goals. The purposes of the fraternity are many. For the school, Delta Kappa Phi is a service organization. The fraternity continually strives to advance the aims and interests of the school through the various projects, services and activities of its members. The fraternity relationships and social en- joyment gained by the members assists in forming the bonds of friend- ship between men of common interests. By encouraging active participation of the members in all school activities, athletics and other functions, the fraternity serves to promote a well rounded character development. Since its beginning in 1961, the fraternity has set its goals high, but the most ambitious plan was to acquire a fraternity house. This became a reality in 1962. The spacious residence is conveniently situated near the college at 3007 Schoolhouse Lane. At present, 19 fraternity brothers reside at the house with plenty of room for expansion. Week- ends it doubles as a party center for the more than 50 brothers and their dates. 1 l , -51 ' s 'ff 59 hp Q. iii 3? .1 I :v E. W v 1-A31 4 ' -0 -J' ' N, . .- . In the semi-final round, the Rams met Hofstra College, ranked high among the nation's small colleges. Underdog Textile pulled the upset of the season, beating Hofstra 60-55, in a thriller. In the finals, the Rams, played a strong Bloomsburg State team and defeated them, 54-48. The Rams became NCAA Eastern Regional Champ- ions as a result of this victory, and advanced to the National finals in Evansville, Indiana, with seven other Regional Champions. In the bitterly contested first round game with a huge Oglethorpe team, the Rams dropped a 56-54 decision to the ball controlling Georgians. Despite this heart breaking loss, everyone affiliated with our College is very proud of our team, who gave a terrific account of themselves this season, posting a 21-3 record. Praise must certainly be given to Coach Bucky Harris and his wonderful team. .C.A.A. This reduces opening room labor costs, and assures the inclusion of thoroughly- openeoi uniform-slke Iufls in each yard of sliver pro- duced, from every bale being led. Bale-to-bale variations are eliminated, the introduction of economy-grade fibers to the mix can be fully controlled, and a totally new standard of opening, picking, carding and spinning efficiency can be established in your mill. The new patented Nlulti-Tuft Bale Blender, developed by James Hunter, is the product of many years of research, directed toward the achievement of predictable blending resulls on a production basis. Exhaustive tests have proven it capable of eliminating the high cost of human error, and of advancing the point of complete blend control to the critical bale opening operation. Multi-Tult Bale Blenders are designed to handle from two to twelve bales, in multiples of two. Get complete details now. Write today for the new Hunter Multi - Tuff Bale Blender Bulletin E.
