Why a music school on Philadelphia ' s Spruce Street? One in three old buildings with sagging staircases, peeling paint, and dingy walls. One with inadequate classrooms, studios, practice rooms, and performance facilities. One whose physical features frustrate students and faculty alike, and discourage prospective freshmen and their parents. Why? and sometimes we ask. How? Why and How, indeed! Because the school is more than buildings and frustrations. Behind, above, and beyond these is the pursuit of excel- lence as the over-riding goal of the Academy, its administration, faculty, and students — ex- cellence in performance, musical understanding, and preparation for the future; excellence in example, inspiration, and leadership; excellence in coaching, direction, and teaching. The Philadelphia Musical Academy belongs on Philadelphia ' s Spruce Street as a beacon of musical excellence for the city, the state, the eastern seaboard, the nation, and the entire world. As your new Dean, I am proud to be a small part of this pursuit. John D. Jeter, Dean

The school year, 1967-68, has proved to be a truly remarkable one for the Academy. Our list of accomplishments is long and distinguished. One thinks immediately of our excellent Domain of Music concert series, our success in seeking financial aid, and in attracting the attention of the nation. Faculty, Administration and Alumni has, of course, contributed to these steps forward, in my estimation, however, the student body has made the most notable contribution of all. I am very proud, as I am sure everyone is, of your performance as musicians, as citizens and as students. Every constituency of the Academy, Trustees, Joseph Castaldo, President
