UI X FEMINA FACT! The building which we have invifed you lo enfer houses a secondary school wirh a four- year academic program, designed fo prepare young women for college. During our s'I'udies al ihis cenfral cify school, our conceprs of life have undergone many changes. We enfered, fimid and inexperienced lilfle girls, only vaguely aware of fufure aspirafions. ln lhe inrerim, however, as a resull ol our sfudies and of our parficipa- lion in various acfivifies, we have become inferesfed in diverse vocational and professional pursuifs, fhrough whose medium we hope fo express our capabilifies and lo render service. Despife fhis increasing inferesl, and our confidence lhal our endowmenf was adequale lo lhe endeavors we had chosen, many limes we became dishearlened al fhe realizafion fhaf, because we were girls, the gills we bore mighf find no welcome in a sociefy, which, even foday, is geared mosfly to fhe accepfance of fhe male. Then, one day, on a page ol Virgil's Aeneid, we found fhe challenge lhaf was needed fo infuse sfeel info our delerminarion. When Dido was apprised by her husband's spiril of her deadly danger from his mur- derer, Pygmalion, and counseled fa flee, Dido acfed with dispafch. She and her sympalhiz- ers seized 'lhe ships, heavily laden with greedy Pygmalian's riches, and, forlunafely, escaped fhe danger he fhrealened. And, Virgil adds, Dux femina fac+i -fhe leader ol fhe deed was a woman! Whefher Virgil penned fhaf line in admirafian, approbaiion, or canslernafion, we do nal hnow, buf, nearly 'lwo lhousand years lafer, lhe line awalrens courage. Ii caused us lo scan fhe record of fhe years infervening, and we have emerged from our invesfigafion wirh relief, and hope, and pride in our hind. During fhe whole of fhe lwo millenia, ii has been a man's world, bul, in spile of lhe psy- chological resfrainfs which impeded fheir progress, in spile ol exclusion from educoiional advanlage and professional opporiunify, in spire of re udiarion as leaders by members of bolh sexes, in spiie of lhe sociological reslricfions which have precluded lull emancipalion, many greal' women have been efiecrive againsl seemingly insurmounrable obsfacles. Yei, fhey, foo, musi' have had 'lheir momenfs of misgivinq, lheir periods of lrusfrafion, fheir quagmires ol despair. Thai fhey were undeferred eilher by the pariern of sociely, or by fheir sex, has resulfed in worihy confribulions lo fhe arfs, fo leffers, 'lo science, and, more recenfly, io fhe polilical life of mosf of lhe countries oi the civilized world. To fhose many daunlless women who inspire us, because of lheir indomifable will, in lhe presence of formidable difliculfies, we girls of loday owe an incalculable debl. Our precious herifage from fhem imposes on us lhe obligafion lo invesl our falenfs so thai wo- manlxind may more lull realize fame, honor, and lull emancipa'lion. Lef fha leader ol fha deed be a woman! They fall abouf a woman's sphere, As Ohough if had a limi!- There's nal a place in earlh or heaven, There's nal a lash lo mankind given. Wilhoul a woman in if. 1 his From Woman's Spirii, by Kale Field 1
