Four separate years are now united in Time's eternal glass, with splendor visioned by our fond remembering. To the ideals of true living have we consecrated our journey. Upheld by our love for our fellow- travellers we have sought to help each other at all times. Of learning we have partaken zealously in pursuit of truth. We have erected our dream on the principles of honor and courtesy. The Milestone marks the parting of our roads. We leave the past, not sadly, but rather with gratitude for the strength we have received from it. The mem- ory of our years at Girls' High School will in us breed perpetual benedictionf' THE MILESTQNE AR hills rise bright and vision-like before us . . Myriad paths gleam, beckoning, beyond . . . On the golden hillside of our youth the milestone Its ancient form uprears, Marking the slow ascent ot our pilgrimage. These separate years, our separate dreams, Mingle now in curious symphony. Ioy . . . friendship . . . living . . . learning Blend into poignant music. Time bears us constantly onward, leaving the milestone Unchanging behind us, As we, to alien dreams and pathways turn, Inspired by the song which binds us. 3, ADMINISTRATION A . . Q , 1 1 A X H 4 Q , 21 MY DEAR GIRLS: The title ot your class book has set me thinking oi the low white posts which l used to delight in counting as l was driven slowly along quiet country lanes on the lazy summer after- noons ot my childhood. Are there still milestones? Our stream-lined cars speed over our perfect roads tar too rapidly tor us to note such in- significant marks of insignificant distances. The horse of my childhood considered eight miles a good day's work. Today we drive twice eighty miles for luncheon or dinner. Vlfhat does it mean? lt may be that we are wiser and better because we have mastered time and space. lt may be that we are losing something of the depth and richness ot a less hurried, more intimate journey. Wliatever the truth may be, it is important that you treasure the suggestion of your yearbook. There are mile- stones whether we see them or not. lt is for us to interpret their meaning and to nialce sure that we can present lor their inexorable reckoning miles which have been travelled with courage, dignity and understanding. Sincerely yours, at iz . IN MEMORIAM Vlhen, on fpfnr 13, lQ33, our libro:- rzcrn, Miss M 17122-fLl3 Connolly, pissed owoy, we knew cr retrl Uno f,C11I'lf7Ql loss. SPGNSGRS Each class, from QA up, has a student sponsor, who works with a faculty sponsor to bring the individual classes into closer touch with the rest of the school, and to give to the girls such personal advice and help as they may need. The student sponsor's relation to the girls is rather in- formal. She attends class meetings and takes part in class discussions, smoothing over tactfully and fairly any difficulties which may arise. Usually each sponsor has two sections to which she especially devotes herself. Gnce a week the aids of these sections meet the sponsor to keep her informed on the atten- dance and conduct of the class, and once a month the sponsors write a letter to Dr. Hart, bringing up problems which they discuss in the sponsors' meeting in Dr. Hart's office. No small influence in the molding of the school, the spon- sors have been selected as follows: l2BWMary Baxter. l2Af eSybilla Ruegenberg, Elizabeth Tebo. llBfflean Fletcher, Esther Glauser. llA- -Katharine Bayo, Ida Fraimow, Mary Lou Laclcro, Mildred Silver. IOB -Ernestine Dudalc, Lillian Kenney, Frances Taltavull. lOA Eleanor Fedyna, Sylvia Crayder, Grace Lewis, Lil- lian Stackinski, leanne Stone. 9BefClara Althousen, Hazel McCutcheon, Betty Oliensis. QA Esther Bleshman, Blanche Eailor, Dorothy Goldsmith. SCPI-IRCSYNE Sophrosyne, the G. l-l. S. chapter ot the National Honor Society, was founded with the two-fold purpose of honoring outstanding students and recommending ideals of character and conduct to the entire student body. Selections are made from the 12A and 12B classes by members of the faculty and senior class for distinction in char- acter, scholarship, leadership, and service. ln the April l936 initiation, Florence Bangert, Esther Blesh- man, Iean Fletcher, Esther Glauser, Ernestine Hudak, Grace Lewis, Betty Oliensis, leanne Stone, and Frances Taltavull, ot the present l2B class, received the torch, the emblem of the society. On that occasion Dr. Frank A. Laurie, lr., of the University ot Pennsylvania, spoke on literature and the joy which it pro- vides. This tsrm Katherine Bayo, Mary Baxter, Sylvia Crayder, Clara Dierolf, Marjorie Freeman, Dorothy Goldsmith, Selma Gottlieb, Lillian Kenney, Hazel McCutcheon, Mildred Silver, Lillian Stackinski, Elizabeth Tebo, and Helen Weiss, of the l2B class, became members. The initiates of the l2A class were Betty Balme, Evelyn Camblos, Ruth Cook, Evelyn Day, Elizabeth Failor, Annette Keogh, Marcia Lediger, Betty Biegner, and Marion Webb. Reverend Monroe Everett, DD., the guest speaker, deliv- ered an inspiring message about Castles in the Air, remind- ing us that the world will never be able to pay its debt to its great dreamers and men of vision. With the adding of each new group to the ranks of honor, a milestone is reached on the road to the universal practice of the line art of living. 13 ecncr QTQIIYWS C1c1rC1 B012 r cmd 1:1 11ec: Marks 1'1 1V11DSU1V11V1ER 'NUG1-11 S DREAV1 RAM F' rw 1 f1 Q Ik 15 P 1 X Q r v 11011 fts 161 2 w C111cf N11 what eh rr erre 111pett. ,rs CI Q1 chef rq veunc. hereme threw her wec1C1111g Cake cmd d1shes before th Gstomshed ev s Q1 her father fCIY1C1S1Y Georg V 111011 tO14e11 x Dfurrt y A dur Uoded uch 111111101 e C1191 Q1t111q 1 acts 1 rQ11C41r1q ht11or Qld thr at T1 '14 WfCI'1A ret ys cmds rte er I hr1 1V1c:1r11ers was 1 r'rQ1yeC1 x D r11c1 C161 er1 C1131 hrs r1vc11 Sr Qc 1111 X 11101 ry C111 er cw w egr r cts OrC1'1 sC1L11t QUE 1111 ru SDTHVW '11ih'5 JRPV' D 1 1 lfiigffti flgi jf 3, S. gerigggfx Shizkesgeizfs s L, -'f1jsgr:1r11e1 Ilght s Qfeci.. L,Qgf5: 'T CHRISTMAS S Christmas nears, there is a familiar feeling of suppressed excitement in our halls. Tables spring up, creaking with their load of hot dogs and pickles, and cake and candy, while apple taffies seriously threaten our dignity as we go through all sorts of contortions to control the sticky, delicious mess. But more important than these are the major projects. This year we had a de- lightful variety of shows. The freshmen presented a County Fair which could easily have put to shame an honest-to-goodness fair. The sophomores had a unique idea. They showed two performances of the old silent movie, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. fn- hibitions were thrown to the winds, and we booed and hissed with much gusto. HUNCVIBACK OF NOTRE DAME COUNTY FAIR MEXICAN FIESTA ACTIVITIES Then the llA's gave a Mexican Fiesta. Charniingly Mexican, even to the hot tamales and that funny name tor hot dogs, it was a huge success. I-low our wise llB's know the way to a girl's heartl life were delighted with their professional-like iashionfshow, the high spot of which was, of course, the hridal proces- sion. Then the last project of the year, hut hard- ly the least, was that ot the l2A's and l2B's the Tatterman Marionettes in The Tam- ing of the Shrew. The costumes, the scen- ery, and the dramatic flourishes of the mari- onettes all conttrilouted to make it the highly entertaining production it was. 'Well we all had fun selling and louying, dancing and laughing. We realized, how- ever, that our amusement was only incidenf tal to the real purpose of our activities. The money thus made was used tor a purpose which made us eager to give our services. Two checks, oi one hundred dollars each were sent at Thanksgwirig, and again at Christmas to the Board of Education Mill: Fund tor Undernourzshed Children. Toys and Chrzstriias stockings were nought to he distribute:-L among the kinder- gartens tor the children in the poorer secf tions of the city. Through these activities we learn the true and full meaning of the old adage which says V!e receive through giving.
