My, how big we thought we were! heads joined our class that year, namely, Belva Hall. Bennett McDonald and Floyd Longmore also year but soon left us. Before long June loomed The two red- Fikes and Sally joined us that before us and we were ready with the passing of all our tests we found that to enter our second year of high school. During our Sophomore year we found that High School was not so easy as everyone expected it would be. We lost two more of our class, Louis Loomis and Ruth Diehl. This dwindled us down to fourteen. In our Junior year, the fun began again. We were organized as a class with Grant Hall as President, Belva Fikes as Treasurer, and Marilyn Watson as Secretary. Then we started our activities. We sold candy and we had a dinner for the Chamber of Commerce. The latter was a huge success. In the The thought activity we paper drive. projects we September of l95O we again came back to school. of being seniors was new and exciting. The first had to earn money for our trip to New York was a Next came a game party. In addition to these sold candy and paid dues, Before we knew what was happening midterm exams were upon us. From then on we began to count the weeks till graduation. Frequently we had to stop counting and take time to sell more candy, have an auction, and another paper drive. Also during the year as English projects, we edited the nQuacker Quacker' and the nBlue and GoldCV In the end came graduation, Uthe fruit of all our toils.n Shall we ever forget our shaking knees as we made our speeches and rose to receive our diplomasg shall we ever forget the joy mingled with sadness after commencement as we looked at the students we left behind, or the wonderful trip to New York? No, we shall never forget these things. Nor shall we forget Rhiladelphia High School and its teachers who helped us con- stantly. But most of all we shall always remember each other. MISS IWEUIIHEN time sure flies! Here it is nineteen sixty six, and it seems only yesterday that fourteen proud, but scared, little Sen- iorsu marched upon the stage of the auditorium of Philadelphia High School for the graduation exercises of the Class of 1951. That was a class to rememberll We quarreled and made up, we shared the victories of our teams as well as the bitter defeats, we earned our class money to- gether, and mixed pleasure with work. Last of all, we stuck to- gether during our thrilling but frightening graduation, and shared the greatest, never to be forgotten, class trip to New York City in June. As the class of 1951 of Philadelphia High School we had fun which we will never forget, and we hope we will never be entirely forgotten by our teachers and fellow students. Now, fifteen years later, I, Lucy Carnevale, having been voted nAuthor of the Yearuam stopping in New York on my personal appearance tour. I occupy a room in the great Taft Hotel. Let me relate some of my experiences while staying here. I first journeyed to Coney Island and as I passed the grand- stand, the harker was announcing, uCome right in, ladies and gentlemen, and see Lucky Slim Lawler perform his dare-devil antic's.u Could this be the same Slim with whom I went to school? Much to my surprise, I found it was he. It was very thrilling to watch him. I found out that he had taken HLucky Teeter'sN place. I saw a tall red headed man coming toward me. He started asking me questions and I then knew it was Wayne Watson. He told me he was a football coach at Harvard and that he was spending his vacation ujust touring.H He also told me that his good friend Dick Graves had finally married and was Coach at Cornell. I left Coney Island and proceeded to the Stork Club. Here I found a seat and guess who was at the next table? It was the former Sally Ball with hor wealthy husband. As I started to leave the Club, a man in uniform came toward me. It was none other than David Penhallow who was now a five star General. We both decided to go to Greenwich Village and here we saw many kinds of places. Among these was a photography shop which attracted our attention because the sign on the window said, HEelva Fikes, Photographer.H We both wondered if this could be the Belva.Fikos that we knew. Me entered the shop and surely enough tnere was Belva. She was very glad to see us and sne said that Marilyn Watson was her Secretary. nelva called Marilyn into ner office and we all had a long chat. Marilyn told me that Nancy Keller, my old school mate, was working in the Adirondack Mountains as a forest ranger and that sae also doubled as a housewife. I knew it, I knew itll David left, but before I had to leave belva told me that Agnes Miller lived two olocks from her snoog so I decided to drop in on her. I went up to Agnes' apartment and she was- very surprised to see me. She told me she was a doctor in one the large hospitals in New York. What fun she said sne was having!! After remeniscing for two long hours I said good- bye to Agnes and hurried to La Guardia Airport to get my plane bound for my home in California. I sat nest to a wave and to my surprise I found out that it was Joyce hull. dow very glad I was to see her. She told me she was also going to ner home in California. She was on leave after being in Africa for two years. Joyce in- formed me that Rose Henderson had married her high school steady and was following him from army camp to army camp. This was not a surprise, although it was a surprise to find out that Rose had two children!! now very nice!! After reaching my home and after taking a long needed rest I decided to go to tae M.G.M. Studio and set some of my friends. while visiting with Ester Williams I found out that Ida Mae heinhold was her gown designer. I talked over old times with her and she told me that Grant mall nad taken Walt Disney's place, since walt had retired. We wondered if Grant worked at the same speed D6 did in school! I was very happy to have seen all my school mates from the class of 1951. Gee, time sure does fly!! How things can change in 15 years!! As Music teachers through our four years of high school we had Mrs. Wood- man and Miss Brown. Activities in this field included Senior Band, Junior Band, Pep Band, Swing Band, Girls' Chorus, Boys' Chorus, Girls' Sex- tette, Quartettes, and various Trios. In our Freshman year the Girls' Chorus presented a Minstrel Show which was presented twice in Philadelphia and once in the Theresa High School. In our Junior year many new activities were started such as a Pep Band, a Swing Band, a Quartette, and a Sextette. In the fall four students represented P.H,S. at Potsdam N.Y.S.S.M.A. In the spring several attended Carthage N.Y.S.S.M.A. for town organizations. Also in the spring of 1950 the band acquired new blue and gold uniforms. They won many prizes that year for their skill in play- ing as well as for their keen appearance. Our Senior year proved most active in the music department. Various instrumental and singing groups performed for town organ- izations, In November ten students again represented P.H.S. in the N.Y.S.S.M.A. Concert at Potsdam. Candidates included those for the All-State Band and the All-State Chorus. On April 28, 1951, the Senior Band journeyed to Potsdam for the N.Y.S.S.M.A. clinic and the Clarkson R.O.T.C. parade where they received a rating. On May 10, 1951, the Annual Spring Concert, with all the music departments participating, was held. The Band took part in various parades and a program was presented at graduation with the band, chorus, and vocal groups performing. In our Sophomore year we presented UA Christmas Story' which was put on by the whole school and prepared by both the English and Music departments. The play was written by Charles George and was based on Charles Dickens Christmas Carol. The following characters were played by members of our class: Bob Cratchit by David Penhallow, Ebenezer Scrooge by Richard Graves, and the nieces by Marilyn Watson, Nancy Keller, and Joyce Hull. During our Junior year the Christmas program brought forth the play WKeener's Ghristmssn, which was a one act comedy and in which each of us took an active part. we all worked hard and faithfully and had a successful production. During the course of our Senior year our class recorded the fairy tale 'Lenka's Little Houseu and presented it over the P. A. to the lower grades. We also wrote radio plays, one of which WThe Purpose of an Education in Democracyn, written by Drvid Penhrllow, was presented over the P. A.Cpublic address system! to the High School and upper grades. In a unit of study in our Senior English we learned the parts of a stage, stage directions, make-up, and the art of choosing and directing a play. Several short dramatic skits were presented by groups of class members to the class. Also during our Senior year we presented a one act comedy 'Mrs. Morley Goes to the Masqueraden for the Halloween Assembly. EPUIQTS -S5 J X f hw by X5 PUM T!ES 9.4. Then something New was added! Physical Education arrived in our Sophomore year to take its everlasting stand. In this field we en,sgea wonderful new ac- tivities for our last three years of high school. These activities included volleyball, basketball, softball, tumbling, badminton, ping pong, spring board, dancing and marching. Teams for compelh titive play included volleyball, basketball, and softball. Even though these Ugym classesn prvved both educational and enjoyable, cheerleading continued to hold the major sport at- traction for the girls. In their freshman year, candidates for cheerleading from our class included Ida Mae Weinhold and Rose Henderson. In our Sophomore year Ida and Bose were both Varsity basketball and football cheerleaders with Sally Ball, Marilyn Watson, and Joyce Hull entering the Junior Varsity basketball squad. Uniforms in- cluded yellow blouses and blue skirts for the Varsity and blue dresses for the Junior Varsity. Two more classmates, Lucy Garnevale and Nancy Keller Joined the cheerleading ranks in our Junior year, both becoming J.V. members. Their uniforms consisted of blue Jumpers and white blouses. The Varsity team consisted of Ida M. Weinhold, Rose Henderson, Sally Ball, Marilyn Watson, and Joyce Hull clad in yellow blouses and navy skirts. The Senior year proved most effective since all our classr mates were now on the Varsity Squad. For football the cheerlesl- 'ers consisted of Ida Weinhold, Lucy Garnevale, Sally Ball, and Nancy Kellor. They wore grey slacks and blue and gold Jackets. In the 1950-51 basketball season the cheerleaders, as well as the slayers, produced new vim and vigor. We were a squad of six including Rose Henderson, Ida M. weinhold, Sally Ball, Lucy Carnevale, Joyce Hull, and Nancy Keller. Our uniforms, of which, lncidently, we were very croud, consisted of gold full skirts lined with blue, blue sweaters, and white dickies and sneaks. Captains for that season were Ida M. Weinhold and Rose Henderson. Soorts activities provided entertainment apart from the eve H eryday routine of school life, and should definitely be enjoyed by the girls as well as the boys.
