XX xsVK 1 W:;r( ' s w M K ' - ' ' ■C7 a T3 Four years have passed since we entered PCOM as the class of ' 87. As early as orientation we began to organize ourselves with our note service and temporary chairmen who would help us acclimate to the demands of classroom life. We learned early that as a group we could accomplish more, prompting many of us to volunteer for projects, reviews, and student council representation to make our individual workloads more bearable. To all of you I say thank you for a job well done. As a class we made some significant contributions. Rather than utilizing short-term answers to problems, we often sought and implemented long- term solutions in areas like the note service and reviews to insure ongoing services for those who follow us. As we entered our clinical years, the importance of a team approach again became apparent in caring for the sick and injured. While we continued to learn medicine, we also touched on the realities, benefits, and limitations of medical care. The was also a time to get to know classmates whose last names did not fall close to ours in the alphabet. I want to thank you for the priveledge of being Class Chairman. Our four years have been filled with ever-changing emotions of happiness, sadness, frustration, and even some triumphs. My goal has been to do the most good for the largest number of people, to offend no one, and to attempt to ease our student life along the way. In closing, let me recall Norman Cousin ' s words given to us at the beginning of our careers: All ye who enter here, pause and remember that you are entering a profession that depends on your understanding of human compassion. Best wishes in your future endeav ors. Tom Dagney, D.O. And in memory of my beloved father, Dr. Gordon Greenberg. Somebody said that it couldn ' t be done, But he with a chuckle replied That maybe it couldn ' t, but he would be one Who wouldn ' t say so till he ' d tried. So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin On his face. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn ' t be done, and he did it. Somebody scoffed: Oh, you ' ll never do that: At least no one ever has done it: But he took off his coat and he took off his hat. And the first thing we know he ' d begun it. With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin. Without any doubting or quiddit. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn ' t be done, and he did it. There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done. There are thousands to prophesy failure: There are thousands to point out to you, one by one. The dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle in with a bit of a grin. Just take off your coat and go to it: Just start to sing as you tackle the thing That cannot be done, and you ' ll do it. Edgar A. Paul was one of the first persons I met at P.C.O.M. One day in the first week of freshman year, Paul and I happened to be walking out into the parking lot together just after dark and got to talking. We sat down on the asphalt, split a pack of Tastykakes he had with him and talked for several hours about our lives, our plans, our fears, our hopes, and our dreams. Paul was like that. He was someone who always warmed you with his smile, cheered you up with his jokes, but above all he was someone who you could really talk to. He was my classmate, my lab partner, and my very close friend. I miss him dearly. Paul was a small town boy and this was a large part of his identity. When he came to Philadelphia he brought alot of the small town with him. Those who knew Paul can easily recall the countlesss sto- ries he ' d tell about his home town, Emporium, PA, or the tales about his aunt who would always cook too much food so that Paul could take the leftovers back to Philadelphia and keep his cupboard well stocked, or of his latest trip home for the weekend, or how he had helped one of his family members with a new technique he had learned in O.P.P. Paul never intended to stay in the city, but he took good advantage of the time that he spent here. Paul was always open to new experiences. He liked to go out to eat and sample our city ' s local deli- cacies, or to go downtown and watch the ebb and flow of the people. One day I talked Paul into renting a wet suit and going down to the shore with me to go body surf- ing. I didn ' t realize beforehand that he wasn ' t that great a swimmer, and I was afraid that he might drown in the surf. He didn ' t, but he found that he liked the ocean and took up scuba diving. That was Paul. He could be an adventuresome soul. I realize that words can at best fall short of being able to express the tragedy of Paul ' s death, or the memories we hold of Paul ' s life. Paul wanted to return to Emporium to help those who helped him while he was growing up. Paul wanted to return home to give of himself to those who helped him get his start in life. This was a most noble goal. We all mourn the death of Paul Moscato. It is my hope that part of him will always live on in the lives of those he touched while he was with us. Glenn Morrison, D.O.
