PHILADELPHIA COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE SYNAPSIS 1985 Co-Editors Donna L. Miller Sandra J. Nairn fm TABLE OF CONTENTS The Beginning I Faculty and Administration 14 Trivial Pursuits 42 Activities 88 Clinical Years 104 Class of 1985 120 Graduation 328 Ads 354 AUGUST 18. 1981 The Class of 1985 assembled for the first time in Room 153 Evans Hall, ignorant of the events which would transform them from student to Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine . The first two years were devoted to learning the fundamentals of medicine. A student ' s day was no longer his own. Time revolved around labs, infinite lectures, more labs and the oppressive lest schedule. Perhaps the hours spent in the classroom are best chronicled by the students lifeline -the Note Service. The daily production of lectures required the services of everyone. Two hundred and five aspiring D.O. ' s soon became proficient scribes, typists, mimeographers and lunch-time collators. Bored with pure medical facts, the scribes and typists began to interject humor and cynicism throughout the notes. In the process, an informal but realistic documentation of the first tvvo vears at PCOM was created. S: P, Nacalada T: expand your horizons! don ' t be a frozen section! Host Dr. Big Nick Nicholas (Ralph Mazzochetli) began by profusely complimenting his son Alex (Harry Anagnastakos) on his amazing ability to palpate hair through telephone books. The cervical spondylitic. Dr. Kline (Dave Madder), introduced The Dating Game starring Jim Lange (Jack Kelly). The four eligible faculty, Dr. V.T. Cipolla (Sal Moscatello), Dr. Kna ' uff (Marc Shapiro), Dr. Misantone (Bob Kuhnhenn), and Dr. Becher (Steve Fisher), verbally jouste d for their dream date, the ultimate carcinogen . Dr. Y.C. Lin (Steve Young). The lucky winner. Dr. Knauff, later reported that she phosphorylated my substrate. Ballerinas Jeff Bishop, Brian Campbell, Jack Chiavacci, Chuck DAuria, Tony Magdalinski, Pat Murphy, Keith Parowski, and Bob Schmidt revealed shapely legs and gracefulness in Medical Men in % Time. Dr. Meals (Steve Young) was discovered at an exotic Continuing Medical Education program, enthralled by the rhythmical dancing of King Kumonaiwonnalaia (John DeChetto). Dr. Mercer (Marc Shapiro) lectured the audience on furry woodland creatures and the origins of osteopathy. Unfortunately, he did not have the physical stamina to finish his words. Thanks to the work of surgeons Carol Robison, Bob Kuhnhenn and Tim Gaul, and the famous anatomist Frank Buttery (Bob Verdone), a miraculous metamorphosis took place-a new Dr. Mercer (Ron NefO was sculpted. Dr. Roger ' s Clinic represented an irreverent study of contemporary family practice. Dr. Rogers (Tom Zicmba) and his helpful assistant. Nurse MyBuns (Debbie Hermany). treated the hypochondrial Mrs. Katz. (.Arlene Imber) and the streetwise Rocco (J.B.). Charles Bell, Drug representative from Eli- Lilly-White, interrupted their office routine bearing nonsensical gifts for all. The concluding act was a rowdy musical performance by our own punk rock band. The V.T ' s, featuring Dave Madder, Tony Conti. Jack Coll, Dave Coffey, and Mark Franz. FLOUNDER ' S DAY FOLLIES SECOND YEAR The 9iS ' .? Follies slurred Dorothy (Kalhy Ryan) and her felul pig Tola in The Wizard of Osleopalhy. Carol Fo. (Carol Holobinko) and Bob Cuzzolino (Dave Hey man) decided that Dorolhy musl seek Ihe wise Wizard Big Nick (Ralph Mazzochelli) before pursuing a career in Osteopalhic Medicine. Her firsi encounler is a group of singing and dancing surgeons in Wouldn ' t you like to be a surgeon loo? She ihen meels Ihe somnoleni Good Fairy of Pathology. Lillian Hynes (Mary Conii). Dorolhy is Ihen directed to Ziggy Gladstone (Sal Moscalello). a sincere but confused pathologist desperately seeking ihe courage lo make a decision. Together ihey enter the strange, dark world of neuroanatomy, where the faculty have become pure cerebrum. Dorolhy and Ziggy stumble upon Physiology Pharmacology and meet Domenic A. DeBias AKA DAD (Tom Layton). DAD thinks he could probably find Ihe Wizard if I only had more brains. The three travelers, spirits high, next visit Microbiology. V. Iralu (Prag DeSai). directs them to 4190. where he suspects Ihe Wiz to be napping on a cholera col. On Ihe way. they meet the miserly Virginia Gavigan (Deb Hermany). In the presence of a few dollar bills, she dies. Our cast rejoices with ding dong that lighl-wad witch is dead! Fairman Denlingcr (Marc Shapiro) startles the trio with the delivery of twins. He feels that the location of the Wiz is a core question 10 be researched by Dorothy herself Denlinger joins the others to find some heart. At long last, the four reach Ihe Wizard ' s chambers. The Wizard preaches from his soapbox about Osteopathy, but finally agrees to grant their wishes. In a fit of silly laughter, he collapses and reveals his true self to be a marionette manipulated by Ihe cynical Dr. Thome (Jonathan Koukal). Dr. Thome concludes a fiery speech by advising that 90% of your patients will get better in spile of what you do for them. Fortunately. Dorothy has been convinced of the merits of Osteopathy and is destined to become a naive first-year student at PCOM. ■.. LAUGHTER . . . Still The Best Medicine! O i ific rodcL ' 5 daain ! The GBS, with its affiliation to the American Medical Women ' s Association, provided its Class of 1985 members with a welcome-back wine and cheese party in Au- gust of 1982 and a discussion of clinical rotations with the third and fourth year members. Following the installation of officers Ellen Con- roy as president, Sally Straneva as vice-president, Mary Conti as treasurer, Mary Jo Eline as secre- tary, and Donna Miller as historian, the GBS planned a diverse schedule. Lively speakers on women in medicine, a seminar on financial plan- ning for the physician, an evening of caroling at the Overmont House, and an installation brunch at The Country Lawyer in West Chester highlighted the calendar. Tact, sympathy and understanding are expected of the physician, for the patient is no mere collection of symptoms, signs, disordered functions, damaged organs, and disturbed emotions. He is human, fearful, and hopeful, seeking relief, help and reassurance. To the physician, as to the anthropologist, nothing human is strange or repulsive. The misanthrope may become a smart diagnostician of organic disease, but he can scarcely hope to succeed as a physician. The true physican has a Shakespearean breadth of interest in the wise and the foolish, the proud and the humble, the stoic hero and the whining rogue. He cares for people. Whatever it is that you wish ultimately to be. remember there is nothing greater than loving, caring, and sharing And if time were money, how much could you afford To spend on another human being? Second, that all his skill and knowledge and energy, as they have been given him by God, so they should be exercised for His glory and the good of mankind, and not for mere gain or ambition. Third, and not more beautifully than truly, let him reflect that he has undertaken the care of no mean creature; for, in order that he may estimate the value, the greatness of the human race, the only begotten son of God became himself a man, and thus ennobled it with His divine dignity, and far more than this, died to redeem it. And fourth, that the doctor being himself a mortal human being, should be diligent and tender in relieving his suffering patients, inasmuch as he himself must one day be a like sufferer.
