Mili- tary history and strategy; gorilla warfare; Brass Polish 101 and Mimeography I and II. The troops were unruly, insubordinate; rag-tag army at best . . . but he handled us all with tact and gra ce to get the job done. If in spirit only, Fred, your first star . . . from us to you. Before embanking on a life as a respected medical professional, Doug sold the latest in contraceptive technology. As our fearless Student Council President, he sold the idea of the gym in 41 SO to the College Administration. A leader in all forms of leisure pursuits . . . Doug, we salute you. PRESIDENT I would like to address a few words to the Graduating Class: Each of you sitting in front of me assembled this final time as a class has made unique and very personal sacrifices to reach this moment, this day. Truly, you have every reason to feel well satisfied with your accomplishment. However, you are completing one chapter only to begin the next lesson in the ongoing educational process known as life. You have heard, I feel certain, the quote contending that the world benefits or suffers Not from that which a person has learned, but from what that person DOES with that which has been learned. And what YOU do with what you have learned will be the true educational outcome of your curriculum. It has been said that the real final exam for the physician in training is the unconscious patient on the emergency room stretcher. There is more than a little truth to that statement. This Final Exam , though, will repeat itself day in and day out, with different names, different ages, different diagnoses. May you find within yourself, each time that you are thus tested, the capacity to respond with judgement, intellectual integrity, and caring. In closing these few remarks, I would say to you: You have been our students, you have given us purpose, and we will miss you. But know that, as we stand aside, it is with our love and faith in you and our prayers for your continued well being. Congratulations And God bless each of you. Commencement Address June 5, 1 9B3 xLybcdbS ' Jhr u uL Thomas M. Rowland, Jr. CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD May 16, 1 983 Dear Class of 1 383: The Board of Trustees has reviewed and approved each candidate for his or her degree, confident that we have added not only a talented and dedicated physician to the profession, but also a concerned and respected leader of the community. As Chairman, I have observed your four-year evolution from inquisi- tive, unsure students to talented, confident Doctors of Osteopathy. While this personal transition was being effected, the science of medicine developed concepts and technology that were little short of miraculous. We are gratified that PCOM has kept pace with these developments at the same time maintaining its standards of excellence and achievement. It gives me great pleasure to join my colleagues on the Board, the faculty, staff, and administration in extending to you our heartiest congratulations. Your graduation in no way diminishes your status as life-long members of the PCOM family. Our national prominence has been achieved only through the continued involvement and support of our graduates. We ask you then to join with us in the coming years in striving to make PCOM the pinnacle of medical education. Sincerely yours, J. Sydney Hoffman, Chairman Board of Trustees OSTEOPATHIC OATH HIPPOCRATIC OATH DEAN CONGRATULATIONS, CLASS OF 19B3! Thank you for the privilege of extending my best wishes to your Class on behalf of the Faculty and Educational Administration. You have earned the privilege and right to be called Osteopathic Physician , having completed one of the most demanding programs in medical education — that of osteopathic medicine at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. I am proud to welcome you as members of the Profession and as alumni of PCOM. You have been a dedicated and industrious Class. You shared joy, sadness and triumph with one another. It has been a pleasure to see you work together. Thank you for the interest shown your College and future students by the significant class gift to the Student Loan Fund. This is tangible expression of the Osteopathic Oath , and establishes a fine example for future colleagues. It is appreciated by the entire College family. It has been good to be your Dean and to work with you for four years. PCOM and my Office are here to continue to serve you in the future. Do not hesitate to call for assistance, and plan to be with us for some excellent C.M.E. programs and Alumni Reunions. I shall follow you and your careers with interest. Many will be leaders in our Profession and in your communities. Support your Profession and College, care for your patients, and practice quality osteopathic medicine. May osteopathic principles be a motivating factor in your philosophy of practice. On behalf of the Faculty, members of the Educational Administration, and our PCOM staff, I extend best wishes to each of you. May God bless you all. Sincerely Robert W. England, CO. Dean DEDICATION 1 31 3-1 3B2 Spencer G. Bradford, a 1 942 PCOM graduate, completed post-doctoral work in Ear, Nose, and Throat in 1 344 and received a Master of Science degree in Physiology in 1 961 . He taught and served as Chairman for PCOM ' s depart- ment of Physiology and Pharmacology for many yeans. In 1 972 he was appointed Assistant Dean of Basic Sciences and in 1 97G became the college ' s Director of Continuing Medicine. But that was not how we, the Class of 1 9B3, knew him. A majority of our contact with him was during his years as Director of Special and Continuing Education. To those of us who frequented the library on Saturday mornings, his C.M.E. registration table and smiling face were a familiar sight. He was always there with a cheerful Hello! and a ready ear. Always there to listen to our grumbling about being oven worked and under slept! This is how we, the Class of 1 9B3 will remember Spencer G. Bradford, D. O. ; not as a dean or director, not even as a physiologist or physician, but as a friend. Which of the following statements by Carol Fox is true? CLASS CHAIRMAN The style that has been our class legacy to PCDM represents the giving, the sharing that was an ideal that began on day one and was fused into reality over the course of four yeans. Each of us well remembers that initial interview in the first floor conference room of Evans Hall. I recall that after an hour long encounter, the epplicant ahead of me came out looking weary. Any advice? , I asked. Just keep smiling, no matter what happens, she replied. The value of that advice I would appreciate shortly as my own interview began. Ultimately, I too emerged looking every bit as weary. Happily, I later found that both she and I would be starting at PCOM in August. Thanks, Denise. On the first day of class when I found myself appointed temporary class chairman, I said to each of you that the key to success must lie in cooperation, I meant it as much for myself as for you. Where there problems ahead? There certainly were, but so many times they lay in the glorious dilemma of having too many people wanting to help, rather than too few. On that first day, for instance, the class spontaneously organized two note services, each unaware of the other. By the second day the two had merged. Then there was the help that we gave directly to each other. Gratitude can never be sufficient for the many hours Bill Shiels spent explaining the fundamentals of biochemistry to me. These are only a few examples, but they demonstrate the tone of our tenure here. In the future, just as at PCOM we found that pulling together resulted in a greater good, so within the larger context of medicine, each of us has a common core of knowledge, but at the same time experiences which are unique. We must search continually for the best of both mentors and colleagues so that we may better serve our patients. Ultimately, when we cross that threshold of confidence and find we have deified ourselves, I ask you to think back to the wisdom of that great ruler of ancient times who employed a slave whose sole purpose was to remind him, One day Alexander, you too will die. It is appropriate at this point to give thanks to the faculty and administration for their knowledge, leadership, and inspiration in creating an environment which nurtured our growth both as students of science and practitioners of medicine. Best wishes for the future to all who have given so much, especially to you my classmates, the Class of 1 983. Frederick W. Ammerman, D.O. m % Mw f k MM mjjL j dm ■■' ■f I GARY A. To Friends: for their steadfast friendship, under- standing and continual support despite my negli- gence. To Jeff: for his honesty — with himself, medicine and me, for sharing bagels, verses, lockers, QT, ideals, study time, feelings, moments of utter glum and frustration, tears and smiles, for comforting and strengthening in times of weariness and weakness . . . for being there. To the Lord: for being with me each step of the way — making it all possible and worthwhile. HANO IN THERE BABY Your love must be sincere. Detest what is evil, cling to what is good. Love one another with the affection of brothers. Anticipate each other in showing respect. Do not grow slack, but be fervent in spirit; He whom you serve is the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient under trial, perservere in prayer. Look on the needs of the saints as your own; be generous in offering hospitality. Bless your persecutors; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Have the same attitude toward all. Put away ambitious thoughts and associate with those who are lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Never repay injury with injury. See that your conduct is honorable in the eyes of all. If possible live peaceably with everyone. Romans 1 2:9-1 8 Thanks Mom and Grammy! Party friends, etc. MARK M.
