When I get out in the real world I ' ll worry about it then. Right now all I want is to party with my friends. Then graduation came and a thought occurred to me. Why not go to med school and get my M.D. The med schools said, Get out of here man , The only place for you is Med School of Siam. I ' m down on my luck, I feel 1 paid my dues. But now I got a case of the Can ' t get into med school blues . I bounced from job to job, a dropout from life. Lost my self respect in bed with my best friend ' s wife. Needed a new start, a career just right for me, Then I heard about something called OSTEOPATHY It ' s not cracking bones, It ' s not feeling skin, It ' s everything there is to know about medicine. Got my act together, got my application straight, Got myself a haircut and now I ' m feeling great. Got myself an apartment with an old college friend. Got myself an acceptance letter from PCOM. I ' m feeling like I ' m someone and did you hear the news. That letter was my cure for the Can ' t get into med school blues . Now I ' m a first year student learning all kinds of good stuff, I ' m studying more than ever, I just can ' t get enough. My life has come together, my parents think I ' m great, They used to think that all I did was drink and masterbate. I got myself a girlfriend, I dig her and she likes me, She didn ' t believe it when I told her about my history. I thank my stars every day for this second chance, If not for the people at PCOM I ' d be lost, or dead or in France. Soon I ' ll be a DO. with a residency to choose, Hard to believe that I almost choked on the can ' t get into med school blues, the can ' t get into med school blues. I ' d like to talk to you, Class of ' 82, today a little about character. In talking with some of you, 1 found that many of you are pretty damn boring. A bunch of mindless, faceless, white-jacketed damn pencil-necked reading machines. Now we all can ' t be leaders but damn it, my men are going to have some kind of personality by the time they graduate from here. I took the liberty of putting in each of your files a Xerox copy of an article that I found particularly informative on this subject from this month ' s Playboy. Now I don ' t want you to think I ' m some kind of candyass, usually I only look at the pictures, but Peffall over here, having gotten tired of the pictures, if you know what I mean, read the article and brought it to my attention. It ' s called Why America Can ' t Get It Up Anymore. Half of American men, if you want to call em that, are running around with limp dinguses because they got no charact er. Now read the article and we ' ll discuss it in the next yearbook. The underlines are mine, the stains are Peffall ' s. Getting back on track, how can we as administrators and teachers be expected to instill character in you damn wimps if forced to use multiple choice tests? Now we know for a fact that multiple choice tests are just another tool of the Commies meant to stagnate the minds of today ' s youths. Let ' s kick these Commies in the butt, fill in E for none of the above, and tell em to stick the multiple choice tests in their Wang Data Processor!!! Let ' s get back to basics and give essay tests, the American kind of tests. It ' s the ultimate confrontation — one man, armed only with a pen and his mind to do battle with an empty blue book. Now I know you men are up to the challenge. This is where you learn the true meaning of the word BULL! We ' re not only making men here, we ' re making doctors. Now read this here yearbook that Brodsky and his crew put so much damn time into, And . . . ENJOY IT!!! Right Peffall? For generations of humanity, about all that the healer could offer was primitive science and a heavy dose of the arts of compassion, caring, and mercy. In an about face, in the twentieth century, we find a different connotation to two of the words from the quotation. Quality is increasingly applied as a measure of the supposed value of a life; mercy frequently construed as demonstrated by permitting a life of less than quality level cease to exist. The paradox is clear. At one time, as the major tool of healing, the art of medicine took precedence over the science; today, the dominance of science causes us to reconsider the art. I pose this irony to you because it not only represents an issue of our times but, more importantly, is an issue which — accompanied by a host of other medical ethical concerns — is relatively new to the healing profession. Your class and those that follow will be called upon by your fellowmen to help define these concerns in the framework of reality. Yours will not be an easy task. Like any caring parent, the members of our faculty and administration have done our best to prepare you for a world in which we cannot supply you all the answers. We are unable to furnish these answers because we, too, do not yet know what they are. We have, though, made every effort to provide you with the foundation to enable you to deliberate and discern on behalf of your patient. The osteopathic philosophy based upon treatment of the whole person as an individual could not be more appropiate to our times. It is our belief that you will be able to meet the challenge you face of fusing the art and the science of medicine into quality osteopathic medical care. Congratulations upon your achievement. You have been our students, you have given us purpose, and we Will miss you. But know that, as we stand aside, it is with our love and faith in you and our prayers for your continued well being. May God bless each of you. tim vCwW- THE SUPERIOR COURT OK PENNSYLVANIA JUDGE ' S CHAMBERS 2110 Old Federal court House ninth and Chestnut Streets Philadelphia. Pa. 19107 (215) 351-5811 J. SYDNEY HOFFN June 23, 1982 Dear Class of 1982: I recognize your ambivalent feelings, the emotional tug that signals your graduation from PCOM. You are elated, exultant, with a deserved feeling of relief, joy, happiness and fulfillment. You are also consumed with a tremendous sense of divorcement from a school that has given you an exposure to technological skills, scientific knowledge and the most sophisticated medical facilities and learned faculty in the country. However, I know from my own experience that it is also heart tugging to separate you from classmates with whom you have shared your celebrations, confidences and anxieties. At some point in your life you will suffer great pangs of remorse if you do not maintain these friendships and relationships for these are significant alliances which can have tremendous influence on your future development. We, at PCOM, also want to share in that future. We want to be part of your life. Congratulations and good luck to you and your dear ones. Faithfully yours JSH:ers Chairman of the Board 21 Dean The Osteopathic Medical Center of Philadelphia Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Best Wishes, Class of 1982! Thank you for the privilege of extending my congratulations and greetings to your fine class on behalf of the Faculty and Educational Administration. You have completed one of the most rigorous programs in medical education - that of osteopathic medicine at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. You have verified the decision of the Admissons Committee, and ha ve demonstrated your ability and have earned the privilege and right to be called Osteopathic Physician . We are proud to have you as alumni of PCOM and members of the osteopathic profession. I have appreciated the Class of 1982 and its spirit. It has been reflected through all four years. You have demonstrated an attitude of diversity and yet have achieved a high level of class unity. You shared joy and sadness and triumph with one another. I expect Your Class to have some of the largest and best reunions we have seen at PCOM. The high spirit of the Class was evident at the Commencement activities, and I was delighted to see you all enjoy your week . Thank you for the interest shown to your College and to future classes in the initiation of the Class of 1982 Library Fund. This was appreciated by the entire college family. The ingenuity of your class and its leaders showed up once more in the way you were able to make this Fund grow. It has been a delight to have been your Dean. I am certain that many of you will be leaders in our profession and in your communities. It has been a privilege to work with you. PCOM and the Dean ' s Office is here to serve you, so do not hesitate to call us for assistance in the future. Dear reader of this book, Originally I was going to plaster this page with photos. Four days of darkroom work and 1 had a checkerboard of my favorite shots. I sat and looked at them and realized it was all for vanity. There were pictures of me, of you and me, of me, me, and me. That night I met an old man who seemed dying, day by day. He confronted me, I yielded, turned inside and met him and this is what he said: You are here but once. Inside you is the potential for Einstein. But also for Hitler. For Schweitzer, for Mother Theresa, but also for Christ. When you were born a seed was planted inside you. Recognize it for what it is — the spirit of God. Nurture it, help it to grow. Make it count. How you care for it is not your business. It is your brothers ' It is God ' s. You have been challenged with the gift of healing. Use it. Protect it. Discipline your life to it. Don ' t lose it. For medicine is not a burden, it is a privilege. In this business of healing, you can save people or you can kill people. The responsibility is yours. You can use this gift for yourself or for others. Do not squander it by heaping up great wealth for yourself for you would be gaining from sick people, from suffering people. Don ' t simply prevent people from dying, but teach them how to live. Never fail to recognize the spiritual nature of your patient. In your life, be not conformed to the world, for as the desert fathers said, society is a shipwreck of manipulation and domination. Seek instead solitude and service. Don ' t be a foreigner to your Maker. a.k.a. As he finished my eyes lit up, for my potential was far greater than I had imagined Before he released me, he bent forward and whispered these final words of truth: Peace, be still, and know I am God. A common farmer shall make you understand in three words, that his foot is out of joint, or his collarbone broken, wherein a surgeon, after a hundred terms of art, if you are not a scholar, shall leave you to seek. SUBURBAN GENERAL HOSPITAL The Last Chapter In The Tale CM The Osteobbitts After absorbing the anachronisms of the Wizards, the ostentatious Osteobbitts oozed forth from the fraternal fawnings of the faithful foundation, wrapped in white, waiting for the wildness of the Wicked Darkness. They immediately were immersed in the invasion of the Dark Lord ' s Legions: Barffood; the Metro Knights; the Barf Knights; the Delval Drives; and the Internal Views of the Internal Ships. But they endured. Tony the Terrible Tyrant; Howard the Humble; Nate the Noble Knight; Gene Gentle (or is that Gentile?); Gawking Gawlas; and Chris ' cherished cheeks; all gathered forces to fight the festering fungus found infiltrating the very fiber of the healthy. And throughout all the aggravating antics of the aggressor, they learned the one rule the Wizards had hoped to hatch in their hearts. The Dark Lord, Death, and his Damnable Denizens could never be conquered, but could be contained and controlled in the countless cases of calamity. Although many were lost in those long two years, the Osteobbitts laughed and languished in their learning during . . . The Encounter And so, we come to the close of this chapter of the Osteobbitts, the end of this new beginning, as told by Kross Roads, The Royal Scribe. 243 ' . - f ' r LINDA ROSENBERG, D.O. Yea Jeff. 1 think it is our rum to say something to these fine folks reading this yearbook. Is that why we ' re on this page? You Bet! Well, what do you want to say? Beats the hell out of me, what do you want to say? Do you want to tell them how much time and effort was put into the creation of this book? No, they ' ll probably be bored stiff hearing how we stayed inside during our free nights and weekends and vacations Senior year to work on it. Yep, you ' re probably right. I ' ll tell you what. What? Let ' s begin by thanking everyone who worked on this, the BEST PCOM yearbook ever. You ' re welcome. You ' re welcome! No, let ' s thank everyone else instead. I thought we already did. Yes, but not in public. OK, Thank you to Dom, for putting together the Senior pages (after I bitched for a month). Thanks to Fitz, for hanging around to the very end and being a terrific help. Thanks to Mikey, for going to California so that we could get some work done. Thanks to Gibs, for not going on a few more vacations and lending a helping hand. Thanks to Howard for a last minute burst of creativity. Thanks to Steve and Robin for giving up their weekend to do the final editing. Thanks to Gloria and Barb for typing their little fingers to the bone. Special thanks to you, Bob, for getting all those wonderful ads together so we could finance this masterpiece and still have money left over for pizza, beer, soda, film, tranquillizers, my new car . . . whoops!! AND Thanks especially to my wife, Candi, for putting up with the nine billion hours of w rk, a messy house, no sleep, lots of aggravation, and me! You all are the best. By the way, did I leave anyone out? Yes, what about your cat? Oh yeah, thanks to Jenny ... No, no, no. Don ' t you want to thank the people at school who helped us out? Don ' t stop now, Bobby, you ' re on a roll. Well there ' s Dr. Rowland and Hale Peffall who have helped enormously in avoiding the red-tape of this project, and whose support kept us going. Then there is Maggie Ferguson and her superb staff in Corporate Communications who spared no expense and busted their tails to help us. And what can 1 say about all those who supported this book and took out ads. To those parents, faculty, alumnus, physicians and corporations who backed this yearbook financially goes my gratitude and personal thanks. And fast, but certainly not least, EXTRA special thanks to Donna and Steve and all the crew at Merin Studios who have been more than our publisher, they are truly good friends . . . Thank you one and all! — Well, we sincerely hope that you enjoyed our yearbook, even though it was a lot of work, we enjoyed putting it together for you. If you were entertained and had a few chuckles then we fulfilled our goal. ... To our classmates — Best of luck in whatever field of medicine you choose to go into ... Keep in touch. Michigan Osteopathic Medical Center Michigan Osteopathic Medical Center Child Youth Mental Health Hospital In late 1982 Michigan Osteopathic Medical Center set a milestone for osteopathic medicine when we opened two major health care facilities in Detroit -a 240-bed replacement hospital and a 60-bed psyc hiatric hospital for children and youth. Our tradition of providing quality health care goes back many years. Our forerunners - Art Centre and Zieger osteopathic hospitals - opened in the mid-forties. These hospitals - now our East and West hospitals - merged in 1978, forming MOMC. In addition to our East and West hospitals, today we operate a 56-bed Adult Mental Health Hospital (the first to offer an AOA-approved residency in psychiatry), an interim 38-bed facility for children and youth and other facilities where osteopathic physicians realize the full range of their professional talents. We are a hospital corporation on the move. You can set personal milestones for your own profes- sional development through our intern and residency programs. Our staff is organized by clinical departments (anesthesiology, general practice, internal medi- cine, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology otorhinolaryngology, pathology, pediatrics, adult and child psychia- try, radiology, and surgery) - and by services (orthopedics and outpatient). LAW REVIEW QUESTIONS Refer to the below paragraph for Questions 65-67: Dr. Big Nick, while demonstrating cranial manipu- lation in OPP class, inadvertently plunged his thumb through Tony Silvagni ' s skull and destroyed his tem- poral lobe. Tony suddenly became hypotensive and started babbling something about a marble plaque. With Dr. Nick ' s thumb still in place, Tony was rushed to the O.M.C.P. TRAUMA UNIT, where Dr. Ray Blade inserted 17 central lines, 6 of which were also placed in nearby nurses and medical students. Dr. Nick complained that his hand was getting tired, so he and Tony were rushed to the Surgical Suite of O.M.C.P. where Dr. G. Old was waiting. As the oper- ation proceeded the ever courteous O.M.C.P. scrub nurse became hungry, dropped her instruments, hit a medical student and left. Dr. Old then permanently sewed Dr. Nick ' s thumb to Tony ' s head, performed a hemimustachectomy and threw in a hemorrhoidec- tomy for nothing. Tony sued the O.M.C.P., the hos- pital sued the doctors, and the hospital union gave the scrub nurse a $17.35 per hour raise. At the trial the defense questions Tony, but Dr. Nick, who is still attached to Tony, answers in- stead. Tony questions the prosecution, Dr. Nick questions Tony, and we question the value of cranical manipulation. This last line of question- ing is known as a) cross examination b) re-direct examination c) breast self-examination d) how do I know, I was at FRAN ' S for lunch during the law course.
