In the care of the suffering he needs technical skill, scientific knowledge, and human understanding. 12 1 L% He who uses these with courage, with humility, and with wisdom will provide a unique service for his fel- lowman, and will build an enduring edifice of charac- ter within himself. The physician should ask of his destiny no more than this; he should be content with no less. from Harrison ' s INTERNAL MEDICINE 18 1 .1. One of the essential qualities of the clinician is interest in humanity, for the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient. - DEDICATION MORTON GREENWALD, A.B., D.O., M.Sc. (Path) I am an Osteopathic physician. Each of you is in the process of becoming one. I will be judged by what comes of your education, and it is my job to see that you learn and learn well. So spoke Dr. Morton Greenwald on the first day of what was to be a long, arduous and rewarding sopho- more year. Terrified, at first, by the volume of materi- al to be assimilated and awed by his seemingly limit- less store of knowledge; we soon came to realize that this man was engaged in a labor of love for teaching and a devotion to his profession. As the year progressed, so did we. Firmly guided through the myriad intracacies of pathology, we came face to face with and learned to understand the prin- ciples which Dr. Greenwald imparted so well. His un- canny ability to sense when a student was not work- ing up to par and to give him a stimulating sense of academic discomfort; was only matched by his gift for singling out one who was feeling discouraged and frustrated and offering him a kind word or a consol- ing gesture. We, the Class of 1967, dedicate this chronicle to you whom we will remember respectfully as Dr. Green- wald, warmly as Greenie , and always as a fine gen- tleman, an apt teacher and a good friend. IN RECOGNITION OF . . . EDWIN H. CRESSMAN, D.O., THOMAS F. SANTUCCI, D.O., GERALD SCHARF, B.A., D.O. JAMES A. FRAZER, D.O., M.Sc. (Ost) .Sc. (Ost) iSc. (Ped), F.A.C.O.P. Teachers . . . Physicians . . . and above all, men! Honest, sincere and dedicated men who imparted their knowledge— free from prejudice and dogmatism, steeped in documented scientific data and tempered by clinical experi- ence—with a zeal and enthusiasm which rejuvenated our mo- tivation to become physicians. We will do well to emulate these men in our quest to con- tribute to society as physicians and most of all as men. 29 ' M ) V mr- c i J Sp vAnli ANATOMY ' k FRESHMEN John Grabusky Vincent Glielmi David Goldberg Dudley Goetz Victor Gregory Jon Greif Bruce Gilfillan Marshall Gottlieb Louis Haenel Arthur Hampton ri FRESHMEN Bart Butta Conrad Bell David Blom Robert Bakondy John Becher John Branas Robert Baran Dan Brzusek L. I BsfBf iis)aHnnsnB)!ass3iB3X ' (£isiflS!e:Be u!:: siiis: iitse: UiRS issi THE DEAN To The Class of 1967: I am happy to share with you in the joy of your gradua- tion. You are to be congratulated on your achieving the degree of Doctor of Osteopathy. The trials and tribula- tions, the sacrifices you have made, and by others for you, the hard work and worry you have endured, now all sum up in success. Each of you carries with him our very best wishes for a long and happy career as an os- teopathic physician. There is in Plato ' s Republic an interesting— and in many ways, still unsurpassed— dialogue between Socrates and Thrasymachus on the practice of medicine or the profession of medicine. You will recall that in discussing the reasons why men work, Thrasymachus had concluded that men work to gain power and to earn a living. Socrates, however, soon has the younger man off on another view of the subject. He uses as his illustrative vehicle the profession of med- icine. As each logical step follows the other, Socrates demonstrates that which distinguishes the practicing of a profession from the earning of a wage. It is the good of the patients which is the purpose of the practice of medicine. This is what gives to the practice of medicine the qualities which make it a profession. The purpose of your life is now to spend your days helping others. Sure- ly you will have your full share of the world ' s goods. But these are totally without meaning, if, in gaining them, you have not kept dominant in your life that quality without which you lose your right to be called a profes- sional man— an osteopathic physician. As Socrates long ago said: And thus, Thrasymachus, all who are in any place of command, insofar as they are rulers, neither consider nor enjoin their own interest, but that of the subjects for whom they exercise their craft: and in all that they do or say, they act with an exclusive view to them, and to what is good and proper for them. To each of you my cordial greeting and best wishes. Sincerely yours Sherwood R. Mercer Vice-President and Dean BOARD OF DIRECTORS Samuel A. Blank Floyd C. Boshart Elmer S. Educational programs encompassed a wide variety of topics ranging from motherhood to hairdressing. Through fund raising projects, the Students ' Wives have served the student, his college and hospital. This year ' s projects included an ex- amination lamp for the clinic, medical texts for the library, book awards to four outstanding married students, holiday tray favors for pa- tients, a hospital cart and puppets for the ped- iatric ward. Funds were also allocated for the new hospital chapel. I will be mindful always of my great responsibility to preserve the health and life of my patients, to retain their confidence and re- spect, both as a physician and a friend who will guard their secrets with scrupulous honor and fidelity, to perform faithfully my profes- sional duties, to employ only those recognized methods of treat- ment consistent with good judgment and with my skill and ability, keeping in mind always nature ' s laws and the body ' s inherent ca- pacity for recovery. I will be ever vigilant in aiding the general welfare of the communi- ty, sustaining its laws and institutions, not engaging in those prac- tices which will in any way bring shame or discredit upon myself or my profession. I will give no deadly drugs to any, though it be asked of me. I will endeavor to work in accord with my colleagues in a spirit of progressive cooperation and never by word or by act cast imputa- tions upon them or their rightful practices. I will look with respect and esteem upon all those who have taught me my art. To my college, I will be loyal and strive always for its best and for the interests of the students who will come after me. HIPPOCRATIC OATH I swear by Apollo the physician, and Aesculapius, and all the gods, and goddesses that according to my ability and judgment: I will keep this oath and this stipulation— to reckon him who taught me this art equally dear to me as my parents, to share my sub- stance with him, and relieve his necessities if required to look upon his offspring in the same footing as my own brothers and to teach them this art if they shall wish to learn it. Without fee or stipulation and that by precept, lecture, and every other mode of instruction, I will impart a knowledge of the art to my own sons, and those of my teachers, and to disciples bound by a stipulation and oath. According to the law of medicine but to none other, I will follow the system of regime which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider. For the benefit of my patients and abstain from whatever is deleteri- ous and mischievous, I will give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked nor suggest any such counsel, and in like manner I will not give to a woman a pessary to produce abortion. With purity and holiness I will pass my life and practice my art. I will not cut persons laboring under the stone, but will leave this to be done by men who are practitioners of this work. Into whatever houses I enter, I will go into them for the benefit of the sick, and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief and corruption; and further from the seduction of females or males, of freemen and slaves. Whatever in connection with my professional practice or not in connection with it, I see or hear, in the life of men, which ought not to be spoken of abroad. I will not divulge as reckoning that all such should be kept secret. While I continue to keep this oath unviolated, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art respected by all men in all times! But should I trespass and violate this oath, may the re- verse be my lot! GEORGE T. PIERSON PRESIDENT-CLASS OF 1967 In many ways a class is measured by the leadership, tact and diplomacy of its president. The role demands an individual with discretion and sound judgment who is capable of mitigating the demands of a sometimes overwhelming administration to a frequently rebellious class. We have been indeed fortunate in having George Pierson assume this delicate, sometimes unpleasant, and always demanding task. The Class of 1967 congratulates George Pierson for four years of excellent leadership. CLASS OFFICERS President Vice President Treasurer Secretary Assistant Secretary George T. Pierson Ivan F. Barsky Melvyn Bishow Samuel M. Feinstein Leonard A. Winegrad The Editors of SYNAPSIS-1967 would like to extend their sin- cere thanks to the following people for their valuable assis- tance. Ed Davis and the American Yearbook Company Zamsky Studios Dean Mercer for allowing us a free hand in compiling SYNAPSIS-1967 Johanna Santucci for relieving much of the burden of busy work Bonnie Miller and Eileen Asbel of Student Wives And we would like to extend our special thanks to Mr. Gregor Betz who on such short notice contributed his artistic talent to transpose our ambiguous ideas into tangible divider pages. Ron Blanck Tom Santucci 218 AND TOMORROW ® ' ' ems beginning our final compreliensive quest for knowledge. But in what will not be the distant future, we shall be expected to care for the sick, mend and comfort their ills and restore them to society as functioning and contributing members. Are we ready for the challenge of this overwhelming responsibility? For four years, now too brief, we have endeavored, not always whole- heartedly, to attain didactic and clinical knowledge which will enable us to respond to the stimulus of challenge with confidence and preci- sion. Many of our professors have labored zealously to prepare us for this responsibility and duty to our society. Five such men have been in- dividually acknowledged by dedication and recognition in this histori- cal biography of four years in our lives. This is but small thanks com- pared to the feeling of achievement they will experience if we too be- come good physicians . In the future when we again scan this chronical of four years long ago, let us hope that we will be capable of saying that we have utilized the advantages of these four years and compensated for their deficiencies. For today we are but neophytes in our chosen profession and are excused for our shortcomings; but tomorrow will our short comings be fewer, our knowledge broader, our experience richer and our service to society as Osteopathic physicians irreproachably beneficial . . . FRANK J. STEINBERG, Business Manager The Class of 1967, and most of all the Editors of SYNAPSIS, salutes Frank Steinberg for his amazing job of acquiring funds for the year- book. His attention to the myriad of details en- abled SYNAPSIS-1967 to be the best financed yearbook in the history of the college. k FAMILY .ear- jen- The class of 1967 wishes to thank their families for their individual guidance and support over the past four years, and for their kind generosity to the entire class through SYNAPSJS-1967.
