C. 0. LIBRARY DSTEDPATHIC DATH I do hereby affirm my loyalty to the profession I am about to enter. I will be mindful always of my great responsibility to preserve the health and life of my patients, to retain their confidence and respect, both as a physician and a friend who will guard their secrets with scrupulous honor and fidelity, to perform faithfully my professional duties, to employ only those recognized methods of treatment consistent with good judg- ment and with my skill and ability, keeping in mind always nature ' s laws and the body ' s inherent capacity for recovery. I will ever be vigilant in aiding the general welfare of the community, sustaining its laws and institutions, not engaging in those practices which will in any way bring shame or discredit upon myself or my profession. I will give no deadly drugs to any, though it be asked of me. I will endeavor to work in accord with my colleagues in a spirit of progressive cooperation and never by word or act cast imputations upon them or their rightful practices. I will look with respect and esteem upon all those who have taught me my art. To my college, I will be loyal and strive always for its best and for the interests of the students who will come after me. I will be ever alert to and adhere to and develop the principles of Osteopathy as taught by Andrew Taylor Still. HIPPDCRATIC DATH I swear by Apollo the physcian, and Aesculapius, and Hygeia, and Panacea, and all the gods, and goddesses that according to my ability and judgment: I will keep this oath and this stipulation — to reckon him who taught me this art equally dear to me as my parents, to share my share my sub- stance with him, and relieve his necessities if required upon his offspring in the same footing as my own brothers and teach them this art if they shall wish to leam it. Without fee or stipulation and by precept, lecture and everj ' other mode of instruction, I will impart a knowledge of the art to my own sons, and those of my teachers, and to disciples bound by a stipulation and oath. According to the law of medicine but to no other, I will follow the system of regime which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider. For the benefit of my patients and abstain from whatever is deleter- ious and mischievous, I will give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked nor suggest such counsel and in like manner I will not give to a woman a pessary to produce abortion. With purity and holiness I will pass my life and practice my art. I will not cut persons laboring under the stone, but will leave this art to be done by men who are practitioners of this work. Into whatever houses I enter, I will go unto them for the benefit of the sick, and will abstain from every voluntarj- act of mischief and corrup- tion ; and further from the seduction of females or males, of freemen and slaves. Whatever in connection with my professional practice or not in connection with it, I see or hear, in the life of men, which ought not be spoken of abroad. I will not divulge as reckoning that all such should be kept secret. Wliile I continue to keep this oath unviolatd, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art respected by all men in all times ! But should I trespass and violate this oath, may the reverse be my lot ! TOBIAS SHILD, D.O., M.Sc, (Ost.) Professor-Chairman DEDICATED TD THE DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY . . . Teaching pathology, which truly encompasses the body of medicine, is a formidable challenge. The Pathology Department, under the direction of Dr. Tobias Shild, has succeeded in meeting this challenge. In a field devoted to objective analyses based on finite values, you have given us an insight into the vagaries and subtleties of disease. In a field concentrating on the microscopic study of the fragments of the human fabric, you have given us an appreciation of the whol . In a field based upon the science of medicine, you have given us respect for the art of medicine. Whether in the capable lecture presentations of Dr. Shild, the painstakingly thorough study of tissues under Dr. Greenwald, or the practical applications of clinical labor- atory methods by Dr. Waddel, your concern for us was always apparent. Therefore, in dedicating this book to you we also dedi- cate ourselves to being worthy of your labors with us as a class, as well as your consideration for us as individuals. p. C. 0. With these words the White Knight is off again on his quest to slay the Dragon of Dis- ease in the name of Dame Medicine on the battlefield of the Healing Arts. His example to us is not unlike the efi ' ect of the simile above on youngsters. Eager is a mild word to describe his approach to a new challenge — whether it be in the form of a group of puzzling symptoms or a group of puzzled students. President To the Class of 1963: I extend to each of you my personal, as well as official, congratulations on the occasion of your be- ing graduated from Philadelphia College of Osteo- pathy. The College is proud to have made it possible for you to become an osteopathic physician. We hope that your consciousness of the opportunity which has been given to you will motivate you to support your Alma Mater so that the opportunity may be given to others who will follow you and support you as fellow members of a great profession. You already sense the tide of change in science and in the clinical application of new knowledge. I am sure you also sense, too, that the role of the osteopathic physician is moving rapidly to a place of greater importance in the world of medicine. I hope that each of you will, in his own way, be part of this great forward movement and that to the satisfaction that comes from giving superior care to patients will be added the thrill of being a contri- buting part of the improvement of health care all over the world,. With warm best wishes and high hopes for you all. Sincerely yours. Dr. Frederic H. Barth, President ' Welcome SHERWOOD R. MERCER, A.B., A.M., LL.D. Dean DEAH To the Class of 1963 : The essential characteristic of education is that it never stops. Movement, change, pace and redirection are paradoxically the esence of what is often considered the stable base of a culture. The cycle of education is marked by a series of events called com- mencements. You have now reached another and probably, for most of you, a last com- mencement. I wish to congratulate each of you on achieving the degreee of Doctor of Osteopathy. I welcome you on behalf of the Osteopathic Profession to a life of study and service. Philadelphia College of Osteo- pathy is proud to call you sons and daugh- ters, and it hopes that you will keep vital the ties that bind your alma mater to you. Philadelphia College of Osteopathy pledges its help whenever it can be of service, and it hopes that as you care for your patients you will study with us from time to time in your interest, in our interest, but above all in your patients ' interest. Each of you has my cordial best wishes for a happy life, a prosperous practice, and a full measure of satisfaction from your service to your patients. Sherwood R. But appear- ances can be deceiving. Into this capsule went countless hours of research, the clinical investi- gation of thousands of patients by scores of physicians and-finally-painstaking manufactur- ing controls.
