Moreover, were it not for the faith and trust of the Administration, the Board of Trustees and the many Alumni Spon- sors and Patrons, this publication could not have become a reality. I will be mindful always of my great responsibility to preserve the health and life of my patients, to retain their confidence and respect, both as a physician and a friend who will guard their secrets with scrupulous honor and fidelity, to perform faithfully my professional duties, to employ only those recognized methods of treatment consistent with good judgment and with my skill and ability, keeping in mind always nature ' s laws and the body ' s inherent capacity for recovery. CO. family. A yearbook is important as a record. It is more important, however, as a source book of memories. Here as the years go by, one will find reminders of how this faculty member and that student left part of himself in each of us and, without our being conscious of it, helped to make us what we are. An institution makes its impact through individuals and upon individuals. The Class of 1954, like each of its predecessors, has left its mark on P. CO. It is part of the College and the College is a part of it. And the College is proud to have it so. Good lighting and care- ful dissection are basic to anatomy lab work. Kymographic records are made of physiology ex- periments. Miss D ' Aurlo is always ready to explain the bac- teriological and sero- logical procedures. Dr. Allen discusses the region under study with the students. Some claim that the kymograph was invented by a physiologist with a soap company! Parasitology lab finds the freshmen up to their elbows in saline solutions. Careful dissection is done by each student on a rotating basis. As dissection proceeds, another student follows in Cunningham. Great diligence is re- quired to properly dissect the elbow anastomosis. Look busy and maybe we won ' t have a quiz today. Human excreta is of prime importance in diagnosis. Dr. Lessig inspects the findings of the embryonic parasitologist. In the end, objectivity overcame sensitivity. Some students, at first, found it distasteful. Frogs ' legs proved to be more than food on the freshmen menu. And on they plodded. Through these representatives, all students have a voice in matters pertaining to their welfare and organiza- tions. The Student Council exercises a qeneral super- vision over student organizations and activities. It serves to promote cooperation and harmony among the students. Faculty, Administration, and Alumni. Student Council undertook the task of revising the constitution and workings of the body in order to increase the scope of student government ac- tivities and to meet the changes which have re-- suited through the curriculum change. This revision, only commencinq now, will be continued by future Councils and will make student government at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy a more pro- ductive and effective organization. 84 GLEE CLUB The PCO Glee Club was rejuvenated in 1949 as an all-nnale organization which put on a highly suc- cessful performance of South Pacific. The follow- ing year saw the inclusion of the School of Nursing and the formation of a mixed group with a conse- quent widening of its musical scope. For the past three years, under the direction of Frank Kuykendall, the group has steadily developed to the stage whereby it tackles one or two church services as well as singing at the various college functions. The group has also been fortunate in having Carolyn Burton Hill as its regular ac- companist. i ' ife V - BASKETBALL For the first time in twenty years the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy was represented by an official basketball team last season. The team, coached by (Registrar) Tom Rowland, played fourteen games. Although their first year ' s record was not particularly impressive in the won- lost columns, the season was not unsuccessful. Through the media of cake selling, dances and other affairs, the girls have promoted good will and funds enough to add several hundreds of dollars worth of books to the college library, purchase new curtains for our auditorium stage, and many other Items which help to beautify our school. Whether It Is a lecture on some phase of medi- cine, an evaluation of the problems and responsi- bilities of the physician ' s wife, a bake sale cam- paign for additional funds, or an old fashioned square dance in the auditorium, the wives con- sistently come through with sincere enthusiasm and a will to succeed. THE AXONE The AXONE has intermittently appeared on the PCO campus since its founding in 1922. When the Class of ' 54 matriculated in September, 1950, the newly organized Student Council was prepar- ing to restore it to the campus as their official publication. Hyman W. Weinberg, ' 53, was selected as the Editor, and con- tinued in that position through the Spring of 1952. At that time, an Editorial Board, consisting of Terry hiall, ' 54, Brian Herdeg, ' 54, and Duane Tucker, ' 54, was appointed. Their term ended in October, ' 53, when Bob DeRue, ' 56, and Jim Chimerakis, ' 56, became temporary Co-Editors. The current Editor-in-Chief is Jim Chimerakis, ' 56. The AXONE underwent a metamorphosis in February, 1954, when it became a pocket-size news magazine.
