'FH MILE TUE l952 Philadelphia llihle Institute lllllll Areh Street Philadelphia, l'ennsylvania Illlllllwllllll These are momentous days in the field of education, and Christian schools are keeping step with the progress being made. In the past year another milestone was reached in Christian education by the merging of the Philadelphia School of the Bible and the Bible Institute of Pennsylvania to become the Philadelphia Bible Institute. As the result of this merger, two lights of testimony became one glowing beacon in the Philadelphia area, but the light does not stop there. Through the many graduates its rays ex- tend far beyond, even to the ends of the earth. At His coming to earth, Christ brought Light to a world dark with sin, and at His departure He commanded His own to carry the Light to those still in darkness. Since the students of Philadelphia Bible Institute, being led of God, are here preparing for His service, we thought it very fitting that we choose as our theme for the first MILESTONE, Christ the Light, It is our intention to show how Christ is the center of our school and of each phase of our lives. The whole world was lost in the darkness of sing The Light of the world is Jesusg Like sunshine at noonday His glory shone in, The Light of the world is Jesus. The Light of the World is Jesus P. P. Hitz Mr. J. llwight Pentecoast Because we wished to dedicate our yearbook to someone who has meant much to each student, and since we have been together as a class for only one short year, we, the Senior class, have chosen to dedicate the 1952 MILESTONE to two outstanding members of our faculty. It is with Christian love that we dedicate this book to Mr. Hitz, our teacher and friend, from whose life in the classroom, halls and offices we have seen the spirit of Christ reflected. How grateful we are for the practical exhortations he has so faithfully given to us from the Word and his own experiences. His smile and gracious greetings have been a source of en- couragement, for they have revealed the inner man that is renewed from day to day to accomplish the task God has assigned. The memory of our contacts with him, a fellow bond-slave of our Lord, will ever remain with us. We are proud to also dedicate this book to one who has given him- self so untiringly to both the study and the teaching of the Word. Such a person is Mr. Pentecost. His cheerful attitude in class, his practical applica- tion of the Word, his simple teaching of profound doctrines and prophecy, and his helpfulness and friendliness outside of class have endeared him to us. In our ministry in the years which lie ahead, we will always look back with a. prayer of thankfulness for the truths which we gleaned from this man of God. 88 ADM! 1 TH ATIO L'But of him are ye in Clwist jesus, who of God 18 made unto us wisdom. ight nspires 0d's oly eauhers 4 I va ICor 110 .mm Xx '-341190940 S,-.Q!....,eL.-'f, , 1 2 A , , P '-.rf -rv? Clifford Harrington, Vice-Presiden-t and T1'easu1'e1'. Our administrative officers have proved worthy of their trust from God, as they have prayerfully acted in the physical and spiritual amalgamation of two separately existing schools. Much of the daily deepening fusion of student bodies, faculties and staffs is dependent upon their faithful groundwork, begun in December, 1950. Dr. Mierop's executive ability enables him to efficiently accomplish his God- given appointment. As he appears on numerous speaking engagements in the interests of P.B.I., he is an example of what our lives should be as a result of our academic and spiritual opportunities. The burden of fulfilling the schoolls financial obliga- tions is borne with implicit trust in God's provision by Mr. Harrington. To this his smiling countenance bears witness. Dr. Mason as Dean deserves immeasurable credit for the smoothly co-ordinated and integrated schedule of classes. We remember him best, however, for his graphic presentation of Godls Word in the classroom. VVorking silently and unobtrusively in the background are the Trustees, who manage the property and business of the school. The Stewards, equally unassuming, act in an advisory capacity and represent the school in their home areas. 8 BUARD 0F TH TEE Seated: Harry Jaeger, Clifford Harrington, james MeCutcheon fChairmanJ, William ,lones fSecretaryJ, Clarence Mason, Standing: Robert Haines, Carey Thomas, Charles Nagel, Leonard Paret, William Updegrave, Elwood Davis, William Dean. DONALD SUTHERLAND AN DREW TELFORD Extraction with a smile. Congratulations Rosie . . . On january 31, 1952, our beloved receptionist, Mrs. Priscilla Hlrrington, com- pleted her thirtieth year of service to our school. Better known to students and alumni as Rosie, Mrs. Harrington has proved herself a faithful friend, always ready to help someone in need. Her smiling face is a warm welcome to visitors and her cheery voice greets those who call the school each day. Most of all, her quiet, sincere testimony for her Lord and Saviour are an inspiration to all who know her. We pray the Lords richest blessings for you, Rosie, in the years that lie ahead as you continue serving Him and the Philadelphia Bible Institute. President Joe Hodovanik . . . . , . . .,.. Vice-President ADvIsoR Minphotographedb Laurence Lufborrow The completion of our senior year is a mile- stone of importance. From it we look back to the fall of 1949 when we, as freshmen, entered the portals of the Philadelphia School of the Bible and the Bible Institute of Pennsylvania. To most of us this was a novel experience-new friends, new teachers, new subjects, new activi- ties. Re-entering school in our junior year was a pleasure with the joy of old friendships re- newed and new acquaintances made. We had climbed one rung of the educational ladder and now faced the added responsibilities which come with an increase of light and knowledge. Our senior year was one of fellowship in the Phila- delphia Bible Institute, where we, as two sepa- 24 rate classes, united through the plan of God. Quiet study hours, chatter and laughter at ice- cream-and-cake parties, serious discussions of spiritual matters, work and play with mingled tears and happiness were all our portion. The pages of our class history are filled with mani- festations of God's faithfulness. As a result of our practical Christian service while at the Institute, we look forward with a vision of a world whose every need is met in Christ the Light, of whom we are to bear witness. Soon we, the class of '52, will be scattered over all the world, but we shall ever remember the times of prayer, praise, and fellowship we have had in Him. CLARENCE L. Emerson Pent Four years ago on an early September eve- ning in the heart of Philadelphia, a motley group of men and Women laid aside the cares of home, office or factory to enter their first classroom as students of P.S.B. A year later a like group took up their studies a few squares away at B.I.O.P. Both groups purposed to learn more of Christ and His Word. For three years and two years respectively the classes pursued their ways separately. From the union of the two schools the class of '52 became the first off- spring, now united in name and in fellowship, as well as aim and purpose. Many have been the changes made during these years. The original home of each class has been sold and the new building has taken on personality as its transformation has pro- gressed. Hand in hand with the changes in phy- sical surroundings, there has been a constant tempering of lives yielded to the molding of the XVord as instructors presented the Lord in all His greatness. Through hours spent alone with Christ in heart-searching study and prayer, His love has constrained many to serve Him unreservedly. As the hour of farewell approaches the admon- ition comes to hold fast that which is good, to Ngo and teach all nations . . . and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the World. JEAN I. With this idea in mind, Lois and Walt chose The MILESTONE as its name. Believing this to be the most appropriate title en- tered in the contest, the judges proclaimed it the winner. The decision was made only after much thought and deliberation. A fifteen dollar award was shared by these two, who, unknown to each other, had been like-minded in their choices. In value far beyond the money received, will be the satisfaction of having been used of the Lord to give the meaningful name to this yearbook and those of future years. To both Lois and Walt we extend our sincere congratulations and hearty thanks. This course was especially designed for those unable to attend day or evening school regularly. Since the class sessions are about two hours in length, there is ample time for discussion. Neither tests nor outside preparation is required of those attending. Thoughts and hearts were stirred as students sat under the ministry of such men as Dr. Whiting, Dr. Mierop, Dr. Mason, Rev. Schmeiser, Rev. Cunningham, Rev. Lamont, and Rev, Strauss. These Spirit-directed men, bringing material from the Word in a new and different light, proved a well-spring of wisdom. Certainly those listen hearts, in fellowship with the Saviour, were the recipients of manifold blessings. DR. CLARENCE E. M.xsoN, JR. RLY. R. B. CL'NX1No11,xM V ' JOHN c. CURTIS, Director v ease? 5 E ' RIAL IHHETY Every Wednesday evening since October seventeenth, sounds of sweet harmony have been heard ushering from the chapel. A look inside reveals the one hundred and ten members of the Oratorio Society rehearsing under the direction of Mr. Gordon Curtis. Mr. t'urtis's purpose in organizing the group was to train students in vocal principles and in the presentation of the oratorios of famous composers. The group made its first appearance at the Christmas party where they gave portions of Handel's Messiah The soloists assisting were: Miss Arlene Haas, Mr. Gordon Curtis, Miss Beatrice Lutz, and Mr. Benjamin Johnson. Miss Mildred Evans provided the piano accompaniment. ln the chapel period preceding the Christmas vacation the school was favored by a special arrangement of t'Silent Night . Subsequent to these activities, officers were elected for the second semester. Gerald Rineer was placed in the position of president and lYalter Heilig was made vice-president. The oftice of secretary-treasurer was tilled by Sara Jane Brubaker. This election was a sign of advancement in the Society. With anticipation it looks forward to added service rendered to the Lord in the field of music. 79 SPIRIT AL LIFE Light lllumines Groping Heathen 'l' hrongs H . . . Believing that the personal work of everyone is more beneficial than the extended Work of a few, the Christian Service Department has divided the student body into several teams, each of which is given various assignments to fultill. By practical experience, students are better pre- pared for the Lordls service. Most students con- duct Bible clubs or Sunday School classes, while others serve as pastors or assistants. Many direct Youth for Christ programs, hold meetings in missions, jails, hospitals, and homes for the aged, or supply musical talent for local church services. Weather permitting, open-air services are held Weekly in the fall and spring. It is the Depart- ment's desire that each student become ac- quainted with every phase of service. A quiet pause in the midst of a busy sched- ule is always refreshing, and the chapel periods, as such, have been of great spiritual stimulation. Different phases of Christian service have been introduced to the student body, giving a clearer insight into the joys and problems of Christian Work. Hearts, strengthened in the faith, have been challenged to present the whole counsel of God in this sin-darkened world. -I +L,,.-as REV KENNETH W. MASTELLER Haddon Heights Baptist Church Haddon Heights, New Jersey GEORGE COLE China Inland Mission Conservative Baptist Mission Dr. Ralph Stoll, Godis messenger at our first Annual Fall Convocation, pre- sented choice gleanings from II Peter, chapter one. The truth of the preciousness of faith in Him was unfolded anew. During our Deeper Life Conference of january, we were privileged to have as speaker, Rev. Kenneth Masteller. Emphasizing our position in Christ and the importance of daily submission to the Holy Spirit, he pointed out that our lives must be deeply rooted in Christ if we are ever to bear real fruit for Him. The theme of the Spring Missionary Conference so impressed us that the words HBY LOVE CONSTRAINEDU have been unmistakably engraved upon our hearts. Many attending the meetings were enlightened as to their individual respon- sibility and privilege in reaching the lost. Among the speakers were George Cole from China, William Pontier from Africa, and C. E. Phillips representing Philadelphia Jewish Evangelism. Each service afforded blessing and encouragement to students desirous of proclaiming the gospel to every creature. I02 DEIIIC A'l'l0 oi P. ls. 1. . . Sion of bered 15 this Occa . Under the able leadership of Coach Ceperley, the team opened with an overwhelming defeat of Reformed Episcopal and followed up with consecu- tive wins over Crozier, Faith and Kings. The climax of the season came with the championship game against Eastern Baptist, played in several inches of mud and pouring rain. Unable to operate successfully under such handicaps, the boys lost their only game of the season. Next season promises to be equally exciting, although the team will miss such stars as Jim Hicks, Don Weaver, Stew Brady, Clarence Adams and Dave Coots.
