I know a man who reports being guided and guarded by the great pink elephant. He describes it with exquisite de- tail KI apologize for the it , but it is the one detail he neglectedl. I am ashamed thatI must admit I cannot de- scribe my wife of twenty years with such vividness. It is all roundness, soft, cuddly and playful, loving and protec- tive, almost a comic figure, yet serious, an elephant Buddha. It will sit for hours, so I am told, in meditation, adopting a pose that is a reasonable facimile of the thinker. Its name is, appropriately, Thud. I confess to a certain poverty of imagination, I am able to visualize a frolicking elephant, even a bubbly loving pink elephant, and I can contemplate a contemplative elephant, but I can not at the same time be serious. We have tried discussion as only friends would, and I was saddened that these failed, though I knew it must. As Locke observed, I find every sect, as far as reason will help them, make use of it gladly, and where it fails them, they cry out, It is a matter of faith, and above reason . My friend continually eluded me. Every time I had sought by reason to verify his contemplative elephant, he moved outside of reason. It was like playing a tennis match where you are bound by the rules, but your opponent has none. We were as two men debating whether a given dis- tance was a yard. We were both prepared to use a three foot rule, but whereas I was willing to be bound by the measure, he gave up the measure if the result were not as he wished. He assured me if I were 'chosen', the vision should be reality for me, that! cannot see, and in fact, think it irrational is of no moment to him, for I do not see only because I do not believe. We parted at that fork, he red in the face from preaching and me red in the face from reasoning with a river. The philosophy of the great pink elephant, for all its cuddly appearance, is, as all irrational philosophies, a power philosophy. Power philosophies may be as harmless as my friend's, or as beastial, heinous, and unthinkable as the mind of man can grasp, and there is no reason to choose between the two, though one is more pleasant and comfor- table.
