Phenix Training School on September 14, 1931 marked an outstanding achievement in the enlargement of educational facilities for the city of Hampton. lt incorporated the Whittier Elementary School and the old Hampton High School into an impressive new building open to all Negro children in Elizabeth City County In addition to educating some 600 students a year, it also serves as a workshop for Hampton Institute students planning to teach. Phenix is dedicated to the memory of George Perley Phenix, fourth principal and first president of Hampton In- stitute, whose wise planning made the school possible. His death on October 4, 1930 ended twenty-six years of service dedicated to the cause of Negro education. Since its beginning, Phenix has always stressed a higher level of learning which accounts for the fact that many of its students have, since graduation, succeeded in furthering their education and securing jobs in all parts of the country. 5 s'I71T13'QS' 3f b , 1.- D ebicoiion F. Stevenson. Endowed with natural kindness, a keen sense of fairness, and rare pa- tience, he is always available to listen to our problems and to offer understanding advice and encouragement. Though we can never repay him for the distinguished leadership he has given us, it is our sincere hope that this yearbook will be a symbol of our appreciation to the Good Captain of a Good Ship. School and non-school time is devoted to the solving of problems that arise at Phenix. Of course, without the aid of their sponsors, Mrs. Jordan and Mrs. Neilson, many problems would go unsolved. omg smff These are our hard-working 'assistant secretaries who aid Mrs. Henry by typing and taking messages during their free time. Many of the girls will go on to become secretaries, having gained much by this experience. Z Wi? 1 The Future Business Leaders of America, a group which works to develop more competent business leadership, has been an active, contributing part of the Phenix family since its begin- ning in '54. In September 1956, we recall our first days in the Phenix family, when we were struggling to get our 'sea legs' and accustom our- selves to the traditions which have been in practice since the school's beginning. Our class was a diversified one, making academic achievements as well as contributing to our many 'victory battles. Thanks to the guidance of our sponsors, Mrs. Cooke and Mrs. Fitchett, and our capable class officers, we were soon integrated with the rest of the students. Coming back the following year, and advanced a step farther, we prepared to honor the senior class at the annual Junior-Senior Prom. Because of the hard work of our officers and committees, the event is considered one of the most memorable of our high school days. That year, some of the efforts of our more diligent students were recognized. Thomasenia Mann, state president of the F. B. L. A. , attended the National Conference in Kansas. Yernell Powell won a scholarship from the Bland Music Contest. Still others attained the honor roll and honorable mention for the year. Now as we are terminating our high school education, many are looking forward to entering colleges, and others will secure jobs in the community. We hope that Phenix will not soon forget us, for we will always cherish the memories of happy and profit- able high school days.
