The bond issue was approved by the voters of PSJA by a 3 to 1 margin on Jan. 31, 1976. The bond issue will also eliminate split sessions at both of the junior high schools. Split sessions became necessary at the High School and at Austin and Jefferson Junior High Schools to alleviate the overcrowding of students in elementary classrooms. The bond issue provides for a new junior high to be built in Pharr, for Jefferson Junior High to be remodeled and converted to serve all 9th graders in the district, for a 14 room addition to the High School. This includes two science labs, minor remodeling to the band building, library and cafeteria. Plus there will be 76 new classrooms for elementary schools throughout the district. Not only do they hold very important positions, but they also have difficult decisions to make, and vast amounts of paper work. Without these devoted people PSJA Senior High School would not exist. The Tri City Chapter of National Honor Society’s duties is to promote scholarship, render service, develop leadership and build character. Eight outstanding students were selected to represent our school in the summer of '75. Girls' State is held in Seguin and Boys' State is held in Austin. There were people from all over the state at these sessions. Campaigning and elections for the local, county, and state levels were done in the actual procedure used by our Government . The rules were revised this year by a teacher committee limiting its membership to five percent of the graduating seniors. The students are in turn chosen by the faculty. The first requirement is an 88 grade point average for the Sophomore, Junior, and first quarter of the Senior year. After this requirement is met, a ballot is presented to the faculty and they rate the student on a basis scale from 1-5. There are four categories considered: 25% for character, 25% for scholarship, 25% for honors, and 25% for grades. Medical 53 To all my friends at PSJA, When I arrived at McAllen airport August 16, I first noticed the extremely hot weather. The weather in Germany is a lot colder in the summer. I noticed that the streets here are very wide unlike the streets in Europe, the whole area looked different to me. I really like the Valley a lot. I like the palm trees and enjoy going to the beach. I don’t mind going to school because the students and teachers are really very friendly and easy to get along with. I want to thank everyone for making me feel welcomed and at home. The only thing that 1 miss over here is the snow, because I love to ski, but I also enjoy swimming, playing basketball and tennis. 1 don't have any special or favorite subject and I love all my teachers. 1 want to thank the Bledsoes’ for the friendly welcome I received and for letting me stay in such a nice home. 1 am really glad to be an exchange student in the Valley because it is such a nice place with very nice and friendly people. Yours truly, Jana Zejdl 54 Foreign Exchange Students To all my friends at PSJA, The day 1 arrived at McAllen airport, I was one very happy person. I never expected all those people at the airport to meet me, it was a wonderful experience. 1 can promise you 1 have never looked back since that day. It has been one fantastic experience. In this experience comes the part of having funny questions asked like, “Did you ever see Tarzan in Africa?“ Its been things like this that made my stay so wonderful. School has been a new experience for me. My school in South Africa only had about 900 pupils, quite a change I can assure you from the 2,500 students here. I have definitley become a Bear supporter at heart and promise that I will keep the Bear spirit with me for the rest of my life. I have learnt much about the American way of life, but there are many things that the “Valley offers that have made my stay so educational. The Texas way of life has had an affect on me, I enjoy being part Cowboy and part African. I will always wear my ten gallon hat with pride in South Africa. 1 would like to thank you all for being so great and when I finally must say good-bye, it is going to be very hard for me. If ever any of you are in South Africa, remember you will always be welcomed in my home. I promise, though, to be back in a few years’ time to visit you all. This past year the band was awarded UIL Sweepstakes, and a superior rating at Pigskin. The band performed at pep-rallies, football games, parades, and concerts. This year the band had 23 members in the All-Valley Band, more than any other school in the entire valley. Also, 7 people advanced to Area Tryouts. These people will tryout for the All-State Band. A new addition to the Band program this year is the Stage Band. The band performed at different public functions.
