PSJA was represented well with four girls going to Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, and four boys attending Boys State at Texas University in Austin. Both boys and girls learned about city, county and state governments, the boys by living it for eight days and the girls for ten days. Everyone met people from all over Texas. They campaigned, gave speeches and won elections. They learned parliamentary procedure in either the Texas Bluebonnet House of Representatives or the Bluebonnet Senate. They created bills and resolutions and passed or killed them in their Congressional meetings. Both groups visited the Capitol and Governor’s mansion in Austin. Eight Attend Mythical State 34 Important Personalities Foreign Exchange Student Enjoying her new American life is what Georgia’s pretty smile expresses. Top right. Georgia with her American family, the Shercr’s. Foreign exchange student Georgia Thatsau arrived in the valley August 17. During her stay she lived with the Albert Shcrcr family in San Juan. Georgia’s favorites include Rcynosa, school, the people and the Youth Ranch. She lists F.F.A., tennis and A.S.F. as her favorite subjects. Drinking a cup of coffee and talking about social problems with her friends is one of her past times. Day and night is how Georgia describes Greece and America. Georgia says even the water is different. Americans enjoy more freedom in school than those in Greece. She likes both America and Mexican food even though they arc expensive to cook. In conclusion, Georgia expresses her thanks to everybody for making her feel welcomed and wants to tell all she “loves you.” Important Personalities 35 Nine Chosen for Students of the Month Students of the Month are chosen by the PSJA faculty. These students arc outstanding Seniors who are honored for their attitude, participation, school spirit, distinguished scholarship, civic leadership, and arc active in student and city affairs. Important Personalities 41 National Honor Society The Tri-City Chapter of National Honor Society consists of 121 members whose duty is to promote scholarship, render service, develop leadership, and build character. The group sponsored Esteban Brown and Tim Hayes in a national scholarship program at the nation-wide contest. NHS holds the honor roll tea each nine weeks. The society was active in the new Project Concern the Student Congress sponsored. NHS members must maintain at least an 85 point average. This year the Student Congress sold “Battlin’ Bear” posters and sports cushions. They sponsored the bonfire and “Snake Dance” for the McAllen game. The club was also a co-sponsor of the “Homecoming Dance,” and a community service called “PSJA Project Concern.” This project gathered canned foods and cash donations to help the poor families during the Christmas Holidays. The Student Congress held a speech assembly and election for the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes. The Student Congress also published the Student Handbook for 1974-75. New Club Gets Started A new club started by Roberto Pulido of “Los Clasicos” is “El Estudiantil.” The purpose of the group is to get people together who are interested in singing and learning how to play an instrument, the two main instruments being the guitar and the accordion. The group of dancers which consists of migrant students, holds assemblies both at elementary schools and at the high school. Donna . . . The Bears opened the season with a heartbrcakcr. In the first half of the game the Red-Skins made good with the ball. At the half, the score was a disappointing 14-0, Donna leading. The Mighty Bears did not give up. They made a comeback in the third quarter. An interception by senior Moises Martinez to the Donna a pass interference to the 13 set up the Bears’ only score. D. Lcibowtiz connected with senior Mike Cran-fill, and the kick was good by Joel Avendano. It was the Bears with the short end of the scoreboard. 32-7. Robstown. . . Bear’s first victory this year began with Cooky Trevino scoring on a three-yard run and Avendano kicking the extra point. In a heavy rain, the Bears put their touchdown on the board with three minutes left in the third period after a scoreless first half. The Bears held Robstown and ended the game with a 7-0 victory. 154 Sports Falfurrias . . . Falfurrias took an early 7-0 lead but the Battlin’ Bears came back when Trevino ran the ball over for PSJA’s first score. Wanting to move ahead instead of settling for a 7-7 tic. the Bears then tried the two point conversion but Juan Mancha was stopped short on an end run. The second half was all defense. The final score of the game was 7-6. Falfurrias’$ win. Brownsville. . . Another close game for the Bears. The Bears opened the defensive battle with a touchdown in the second quarter. Quarterback David Leibowitz passed to Tito Leal for a 49-yard touchdown but the kick was no good. The PSJA Bears held a 6-0 lead. Brownsville Hanna scored with 40 seconds remaining in the third period bringing the score to a deadlock of 6-6 for the first district game. Sports 155 San Benito . . . The Bears scored first and last but could not outdo the Bulldogs. On the first ball possession sophomore quarterback. Pete Bazan, pitched to Leal for 27 yards. Trevino made the touchdown and Avcndano added the extra point. The first half belonged to the Mighty Battlin’ Bruins with the score 7-6. PSJA scored again in the fourth quarter when Bazan hit Trevino with a 46-yard pass good for a touchdown. The final score was 22-13. McAllen’s favor. PSJA dropped their second district game to San Benito 27-0. The Bears fell behind 21-0 in the first half. The Greyhounds scored their last touchdown with 3:32 left in the game leaving the score 27-0. McAllen. . . 156 Sports Edinburg. . . PSJA really bobbed the Edinburg Bobcats’ Homecoming with a score of 34-7. At the sound of the first whistle. Cranfill set up two scores. Martinez cut back over left tackle for a 28-yard scoring run. Avcndano’s kick was good. Walter Patterson dived in from the three scoring again in the first quarter. Oscar Guzman then intercepted the ball and hauled it to the end zone with a 27-0 advantage for the half. Cranfill scored the last Bear TD with 3:43 left in the fourth quarter. Edinburg scored with 1:13 left on the clock. The final score was 34-7. Mission. . . The Bears won their Homecoming game with a score of 22-8. It was PSJA’s first victorious Homecoming since 1971. Mission was first on the scoreboard with 5:38 left in the first quarter. The second quarter was scoreless with Mission ahead 6-0 at the half. Leal set up two points for the Bears as he was trapped in the end zone. The score was an 8-8 tie in the third quarter. Patterson put the Bears up on top for good when he scored from 2-yards out to up the Bears’ lead 15-8. With 1 8 seconds remaining in the game, Trevino scored the last touchdown with Avendano adding the extra point. The 1974-75 PSJA Homecoming ended with a great 22-8 victory. Sports 157 Harlingen. . . The PSJA Bears fell to the Cardinals' clutches with little effort from the Bears. The first quarter was scoreless, but the Cardinals jumped ahead with a 10-0 halftime score. The Bears stiffened the defense, but Harlingen flew by with a final score of 24-0. Weslaco. . . Weslaco won putting PSJA into fifth place for final district standings. The first half of the game was scoreless. Weslaco scored their only touchdown in the third quarter. The extra point was good and the game ended with the score 7-0. 158 Sports This year was a fair year for the PSJA J V’s as they managed to salvage a 5-5 season record. Their best victory came when they beat McAllen J V’s 22-6. Coach Richard Cortez said that the'J V’s played better than their record indicated, because the boys had good spirit and played together on a team. Trujillo. 174 Sports There is a new team in PSJA and it’s the Girls Track team. The team is made up of twenty girls coached by Mrs. Mary Bard. The only purpose of this club is to give the girls who are interested in track an opportunity to compete. There arc no requirements for this club. The girls attend cross-country track meets and also participate in spring track meets. Mrs. Bard is looking forward to next year because of the valuable experience the girls will gain this year.
