Their agen da often consists of department and budget reports and elections of personnel. The Board recently changed the grading period from six to nine weeks. Another measure was passed stating they welcomed and encouraged the attendance of the student body president and any other student. Miss Geraldine Palmer, Administrative Secretary Mr. Farmer leads personnel Mr. Farmer went through his thirteenth year without too many student problems. Mr. Leslie Whitlock and Mr. Ernest Alvarado have completed their second year and have many years to continue guiding students through their rough roads. These men and the helpful counselors arc the backbone of our school. They guide the fine students of PSJA year after year. Math teachers arc, seated, Mrs. Shirley Saulsbury, head of the Math Department, and holding the slide rule arc Mrs. Janet Standing are Mr. Joe Garza, Mr. William McClure, Mr. Pat Gill. Mr. Jack McKecvcr, Mr. Domingo Sotelo, and Mr. Ramon Juniors double up on math PSJA’s Math Department added six teachers to their department. Heading it is Mrs. Shirley Saulsbury. This is the first time at PSJA in which juniors were allowed to take Algebra II and trigonometry and elementary analysis in order to have a fifth year of math. Mr. C. In the above photo. Corky Guenther experiments with some equipment. Science teachers put on fair The Science Department, headed by Mr. J. A. Badillo sponsors scicncc-oriented students in the Science Club. Members of the department accompanied the club on field trips and expeditions to Padre Island Beach, the planetarium, and other scientific sites. Along with this, the department arranged for leading scientists to speak before the students. A grant of S400 from the School Board made the third Annual Science Fair possible. It featured I.P.S.. Biology I. chemistry, and Biology II projects prepared by science enthusiasts. Three new teachers were added to the department this year. Mrs. Gracie Garcia, a Spanish teacher, is one of the sponsors of P.A.S.F. in its many activities. Mrs. Vicky Contreras takes on three foreign language classes. Mr. Paul Earls heads the drama classes who put on several plays throughout the year for student entertainment. English adds eight teachers The English Department consists of sixteen teachers ready to help any student to learn English. Mrs. Vernon Brooks, head of the department, trains students in U.l.L. Ready Writing competition, and puts in extra time helping English IV students. History fair part of scene The history department proudly boasts 13 teaching instructors. Two new faces were seen behind a teacher’s desk this year. Miss Kathleen Stevens, a former PSJA student, and Mr. Victor Moroles. An annual history fair, sponsored by the department, was planned for the month of March. Students enrolled in history classes were asked to participate. Mrs. Margie McCarthy teaches world history as well as sponsoring the campus publications. The Bear’s Tale and Bear Memories. History teachers arc, bottom 1 to r. Mrs. Gwynyth Deuel, known for knitting, is study hall teacher at PSJA. 9tudents get business skills Students enrolled in business classes get a taste of the business world by learning various skills. Among the familiar faces in “T” building, two more were added. Miss Santa L. Serna and Miss Gloria Castillo are among some of the new teachers at PSJA. Other business teachers who arc gjven credit for doing a great job are Mrs. Suzanne Trawcck, Mr. Charles Cain, Mrs. Gloria Potter, Mrs. Carol DeBerry, and Mrs. Rosalinda Rodriguez. Their activities have included school and Christmas concerts and caroling. Mr. Fete Cisneros heads the Varsity Band. He readies the Band and Bearcttcs for half time shows. Mr. Cisneros looks like he’s having a hard time with a few band members. Either tuning instruments or voices arc Mr. Pete Cisneros, band director, and his assistant Mr. Gilbert Saenz. P.E. classes enjoy badminton, volleyball, softball, baseball, football, basketball, exercises, trampolinejumping, and dancing. Vocational staff increases Students enrolled in vocational classes are offered an opportunity to learn various interesting skills. Various clubs are sponsored by the vocational department which provide students experience in auto and appliance repair, metal and construction trades, agriculture, art methods, clerical skills, and opportunities to work at numerous types of jobs while still attending school. The department enjoys a fairly new spacious building which houses costly equipment that is vital to acquiring the varied skills. Mr. Wesley Van Matre heads the vocational department. Erasmo Sandoval is only an example of a typical auto mechanics student, while Cynthia Solis is busy putting her talents to practice in her home economics course. 22 Lopez, Mr. Cecil Hopkins, Mr. pez, and Mr. Fausto Galvan. Seated Salinas was an addition to the voca- Males get cooking experience Home economics is not just cooking and sewing. It includes food and nutrition, textiles and clothing, and even family relations. This year something new has been added. Mrs. Katherine Fairchild is now holding cooking classes, but for males only. Other teachers in the home economics department include Mrs. Marjorie Marion and Miss Carol Carden, who took over Mrs. Sue Crew's place. Mrs. Norton teaches home and family living. Hermelinda, below, will reign until the 1972-73 Homecoming. After a 7-3 victory over Weslaco, the Homecoming sock-hop was the “in” place to be. Dicky Powers capped a first quarter, 56-yard drive with a one yard plunge. Randy Williams added the extra point. Bobby Flores scored in the second period from five yards out. Williams kicked the extra point. In the third quarter. Powers hit two passes for touchdowns, one for 28 yards to Ernie Chapa and the other, a 40-yard toss to George Willingham. Williams kicked the first point. Role Gomez missed after Willingham’s score. David Cantu scored in the last quarter from 28 yards out. Williams added the final point. Bruins defang RGC Rattlers The Bears cased by the Rio Grande City Rattlers, 10 0, on the muddy Rattler field. Two former PSJA assistant coaches were coaching the Rattlers. Rio shut the Bears down completely until the second quarter when Ernie Chapa raced 34 yards for a touchdown to end a 54-yard drive. Rjndy Williams kicked the extra point. Role Gomez booted a 36-yard field goal late in the third quarter to give the Bears their final points. Rio never really mustered any serious scoring threat. They reached the Bears 19 early in the game for their deepest penetration. The offense of both teams was greatly hindered by the poor field condition. 143 Bruins swat EE Jackets [ Despite a slow start, the Bears come on in the second and fourth periods to crush the Edcouch Elsa Yellowjackets, 28-0. Dicky Powers made the first down from two yards out. Randy Williams added the extra point. Shortly before the half. Bobby Flores plunged three yards for the score. Williams kicked the extra point. In the final period. Powers scooted nine yards around his right for his second score of the night. Williams again kicked the extra Bears tie Bobcats A hard fought contest with Edinburg resulted in a 0 0 tie in the district opener. Sept. 24. Edinburg later represented the district by virtue of having three penetrations to PSJ A’s one. The Bobcats threatened to score in the first quarter. They drove to the Bear five before Jimmy Aleman fell on a fumble. PSJA’s serious threat came in the second quarter when they drove to the Bobcat 18 yard line. A fourth down pass fell incomplete. On the game’s last play. Dicky Powers returned an attempted field goal to the Cat-35 before being tackled. 145 Bears sneak by Bulldogs PSJA took its first district victory over McAllen,6-0. Leo Saldana scored on a 23-yard scamper in the second quarter. The extra point attempt was wide. Later in the quarter, the Bears drove to the Bulldog one. before losing the ball on a fumble. The Bears again threatened in the quarter driving to the Dog 19 before running short on downs. A 37-yard field goal attempt was wide. McAllen threatened on two occasions. driving once to the Bear 11 and once to the Bear 18. but lost the ball on downs on both occasions. 146 Battlin' Bears pound hounds PSJA routed the San Benito Greyhounds. 34-0. for its second district win, Oct. 15. Ernie Chapa sprinted 52 yards in the first quarter for the first Bear score. Randy Williams added the extra point. In the second quarter, Dicky Powers hit Abel Villarreal with a 42-yard scoring bomb. Williams added the extra point. Later. Powers completed a short pass to Chapa, who scampered 69 yards for the score. Williams kick went wide. In the third period. Bobby Flores scored from 17 yards on the play after the Bears recovered a Hound fumble. Williams kicked the extra point. In the final period. Flores went the last six yards of a 69-yard scoring drive. Williams added the PAT. 147 The Bears took their sixth win, 23-3, over the Harlingen Cardinals. The Cards scored on a 38-yard, second quarter field goal by E. Ocevidco. The Bears scored in the same quarter when Dicky Powers threw to Freddie Leal for a 68-yard play. Randy Williams’ extra point kick was wide. Powers ended a 70-yard third-quarter drive with a two-yard plunge. Williams added the extra point. Ernie Chapa scored from 31 yards out in the last quarter and Williams kicked the PAT. Williams later kicked a 24-yard Held goal. Eagles wiped off scoreboard The victorious Bruins shut out the Mission Eagles, 24-0, Oct. 29. Climaxing a 68-yard drive, Leo Saldana scored first from six yards out. Dicky Powers hit Fred Leal on a 24-yard touchdown pass for the Bears second score. Another 24-yard Powcrs-toLeal pass set up the five-yard touchdown run by Ernest Chapa. Randy Williams kicked all PAT’s. For the Bears’ final score. Randy connected on a 29-yard field goal to give the Bears the 24 0 victory. The Bears defense shined all through the game to keep the Eagles from scoring. Bears taste sweet revenge The Battlin’ Bruins defeated the Weslaco Panthers, 7-3, for a sweet Homecoming victory, Nov. 5. The Panthers had several chances to score, but the stingy Bear goal line defense only gave up three points on a field goal. PSJA’s Bears finally found paydirt in the third quarter on a 12-play scoring drive covering 64 yards. Bear quarterback Dicky Powers circled left end for the final seven yards. Randy Williams added the extra point. Weslaco made one last effort, but was stopped on a fumble, which the Bears recovered, and then ran the clock out. PSJA stays undefeated PSJA’s Mighty Bears ended their 1971-72 season with a 10-7 victory over Brownsville, Nov. 12. The Eagles scored first on a 67-yard bomb, which gave them the honor of being the only team to cross the Bear goal line. PSJA scored next on a two-yard run by Ernest Chapa, which ended an eight-play, 67-yard drive. With three minutes left in the game, the Bears took the ball on the 22-yard line and drove to the Eagles’ 30-yard marker. With seconds left, Rolando Gomez kicked a whopping 47-yard field goal. The ball sailed through the air and hit the cross bar to fall for the Bear victory and an undefeated season. Gil bert Garza, and Greg Stuart, who, along with other strong prospects, should be a good foundation in helping build next year's Varsity.
