In the first period the Bears recovered a Cottonpicker fumble on the 13 yard line, and Tanner later plunged into the end zone. The Bears held this slim lead until midway in the third quarter, when the ’Pickers drove 53 yards, and Jesse Hawkins tied the score. The Bears were unable to gain and were forced to punt. Robstown took over and drove 74 yards for the winning touchdown. Gary Champion smashed through for the score that put PSJA in the losing column. In the final minutes of the game the Bears desperately attempted to score, but this drive was killed when a pass intended for Tanner was intercepted on the Robstown 37 yard line. i P-Sff-A 35 Mercedes H- The Bears bounced back with a 35-14 crushing of the Mercedes Tigers. The scoring barrage opened early when Ramirez sneaked across from the one. The Bears scored again when Joe Garza blasted forty yards for a TD. In the third quarter Cortez cinched the game for the Bears when he intercepted a Tiger pass and raced one hundred yards for the score. Garza then sprinted 71 yards for another TD. Later Mercedes again scored, this time on a 17 yard pass from Riley to Marchant. The Bear defensive unit was as impressive as the offense, and continually stopped the Tigers on crucial plays. 201 P-SfJ-A 3 Weslaco O Joe Garza booted an early 15 yard field goal, and the Bears' defense kept their goal line uncrossed to give the Bruins a slim 3-0 win over powerful Weslaco Panthers. The Panthers drove to the Bear 30 yard line, but the hard-charging defense held. Early in the third quarter the Bruins drove to the Panther 24 yard line, but the Panthers stiffened. Later the Bears fumbled on their 22 yard line, and the Panthers smashed to the three yard line. Here the Panthers fumbled, and the Bears recovered. With 40 seconds left, the Panthers moved from the 50 to the Bear one foot line. On the game’s last play, Panther Zeke Garza was smothered by the whole Bear line, and Garza’s opening field goal was the margin oi another Bear victory. 202 P-S{J A 53 Jalfurrias O P-S )-A 12 The Kerrville Antlers scored two first half touchdowns and then held off the determined Bears for a 14-12 win. This bi-district loss ended the Bears' hopes for a third consecutive drive to the state AAA finals. The Antlers scored first midway in the first quarter when quarterback Sully Woodland passed to Raymond LeMeilleur, who in turn lateraled to Richard Marrs for the score. The Antlers scored again in the second quarter when Javier Vela plunged from one yard out. This drive started on the Kerrville 19 yard line. Just before the half. Wright ended a Bear 71 yard drive for the Bears first TD. Jesse Espinoza set up the Bears' second touchdown with a recovery of an Antler fumble. The offense quickly drove 30 yards, with Tanner going in from the three. Although the Bears dominated the second half completely and held the Antlers to only one first down, fumbles and penalties prevented any further scoring. Thus ended all Bear hopes for a State Championship, and the eventful 1964 season was at an end. Kerrville ! 4 The Bears wrapped up the District 16AAA crown by crushing the Falfurrias Jerseys 53-0.
