H Coaches Stewart and Cooke look over a play used by the Bears in 1952. Fighting Bears . .. Statistically the Be a r s didn't rank very high. They scored only 103 points to their opponents' 220. Mentally they we re a great team. They never gave up until the final whistle and th e i r spirit was some- thing wonderful to see. We salute the en- tire 1952 Bear football squad. 4 Dick Bernard sees an opening at the Mission game. The Bears dropped their opening game of the season on September 12 to the Mercedes Tigers by a 6-0 count. The game was purely a defensive one that saw Mercedes scoring scant minutes before the end ofthe game and the Bears being stopped short by the clock. Donna's Ken Whilhite and company proved too much for the Bruins on September 9 as they scalped the Bears Z5-0. The Bears' highly regarded passing attack failed to materialize. Heavy underdogs, the Bears uppe d their prestige by holding the Brownsville Eagles to a Z6-Z6 deadlock on October 10. The Bruins showed t r e me nd o u s spirit and led Z6-19 until the final minute which saw an intercepted pass. On October 16 the Bears d r 0 ppe d a hard-fought tilt 19-O to the San Benito Greyhounds. Billy Parsons' running proved too much forthe Bruins who tried mightily but never seemed to get started.
