Homecoming Senior Representatives: Kathy Honecker, Pam Felker, and Julie Wright who was crowned queen at the Homecoming Dance. 10 11 VaV- IU ..........Fantasy Island AlBl? The events that made up Homecoming this year were varied and exciting. They began Thursday night, September 30 with the Variety show in the theatre, followed by a patio dance. The CUB sponsored Livingston Taylor and Frankie and the Knockouts concert on Friday. Saturday the Carnival began bright and early and included various booths, and games. The parade was a big success with Mr. Rork and Tattoo leading the way. The rest of the day there were Alumni Soccer and Baseball games, and Pfeiffer beat High Point College in their own match-up. The weekend wrapped up with the traditional dance at Fiber Industries on Saturday night where Julie Wright was crowned Homecoming Queen for 1982. 12 Williamsburg Christmas If any one event on the Pfeiffer Campus during the year brings the Pfeiffer students closer, it is the decoration and events surrounding Williamsburg Christmas. Williamsburg Christmas deals with the non- commercial aspects of decorating, aspects used in early Williamsburg Pennsylvania and that are still used today. Decorations consist of various kinds of greenery cut from various spots on campus. This weekend is a time when Pfeiffer students are brought together without the affects of lights, commercials, or presents, but celebrate the Christmas Spirit through working together with nature. Dean Madeline Allen does her part in decorating the Student Center. 14 The work is almost finished and the decorations are completed 15 April Festival April Festival was, again, a big success. Festivities started with a dance on Friday night at Fiber Industry in Salisbury with the Entertainers and the presentation of the representatives for April Festival Queen and the April Fest court. On Saturday, the carnival began in the afternoon, crowning of the queen followed. This was held in the old Gym due to inclement weather. The candidates for Queen were Carol Durkin, a Health and P.E. Major from Massachusettes, Cindy Long, a Psychology Major from Durham, and Pam Felker a Business Administration Psychology Major from Charlotte. Pam Felker was crowned April Festival Queen for 1983. April Fest ended with the fantastic Sugarcreek concert on Saturday night. y V w , V « 0 V rt • t • • 1b A, ' • V HU • 1' hi , j gV lit III•U | I f • I f«wg « • r • ! 'V; i. i' '1 '!1 ;t,. Food was provided by Epicure, Music was provided by C.U.B. and head wreaths were supplied by the bushes. 17 CUB Entertainment The College Union Board provided many forms of entertainment throughout the year. Among these were concerts featuring some top notch names of the entertainment world. Frankie and the Knockouts along with Livingston Taylor put on a concert many will not soon forget. CUB also brought locally famous Sugarcreek to Pfeiffer as part of the April Festivities. This concert seemed to be the most liked of all. Many CUB sponsored movies were brought to the Pfeiffer week ends such as Absence of Malice and Chariots of Fire . The CUB brings many good functions to Pfeiffer and they should be encouraged to continue. Livingston Taylor opens for Frankie and Knockouts Frankie and the Knockouts in Concert 18 In March of this year, something very unique and special happened to Pfeiffer College and its surrounding community. Pfeiffer College held its own Dance-A-Thon for Muscular Dystrophy. Area Schools were invited. As patrons of the dance we were televised by a Charlotte station. Free t-shirts were distributed to everyone and a large amount of money was raised. Special thanks to Tony Yarbrough for his fine work as chairman of this event and also thanks to anyone who donated or participated. 19 Blood Drive Pfeiffer put on its semesterly Blood Drive again this year and a little over 125 pints were collected in the spring. Many more people tried to give their blood, but minor complications kept them from doing so. Would you take this guy's blood? 20 21 22 23 24 25 27 1 • .M3L 28 29 31 3V Mary Ruth Allen BS Mathematics Secondary Education Cum Laude, Dean's List, CLC Publicity Chair- man, Homecoming Carnival Chairperson, Williamsburg Christmas Chairperson, Who's Who Among College Students Patty M. The year began with the American Premiere of Tyndale by John Stuart Anderson being done here at Pfeiffer. This was one of the more serious plays the theatre has presented and it was handled with great expertise. Fred Salancy, the head of the theatre department, played the character of Tyndale and proved that he can act as well as direct. The play was well received within the school and the surrounding community and obtained good reviews. Ok keafoe The American Premiere of TYNDALE Hi 11iam Tyndale William Tyndale (ca. 1494-1536), an English reformer, was translator of the first Bible printed in English. Tyndale lived in an age when the Medieval world was making room for the modern. He attended Cambridge where he studied biblical languages; later he matriculated at the University of Wittenberg where he came under the influence of Martin Luther. Tyndale completed in 1525 his translation of the New Testament into English and submitted it for publication in Germany, for England was at this time still Catholic. Eleven years later Tyndale was arrested as an enemy of the Emperor and imprisoned in a castle not far from Brussels. Early in October 1536 he was degraded from the priesthood, strangled and his body burnt, though unsuccessful attempts were made from England, which had now become Protestant, to secure his release. Tyndale's main achievement lay in setting the direction later English Bible translation was to take: to capture the tone and rhythms of the spoken word as the appropriate language of Scripture. The King James Version thus owes a great deal of its influence and success in the English- speaking world to William Tyndale. 144 Dayton Estes The Public After Tyndale came two one- act plays; The Public Eye and Black Comedy by Peter Shaffer. The Public Eye had a cast of Judy O'dell as Belinda, Paul DeFerrari as Charles and Erik Berg as Julian. This was a look at the problems of a married couple and how they were resolved by the other Man which turned out to be the investigatior the husband hired to find out who the wife was having an affair with. 145 146 147 around in the dark or is it? The Black Comedy was set so that when the lights were on on the stage it was dark to the characters and when the lights were back to normal the characters acted as if they couldn't see. It was a hilarious look at the night a girl's father is supposed to meet her financee and everything goes wrong that can, including a power failure. Brent Gibbs, Mindy Smith, Kit Jenkins, Greg Thompson, David Joyce and Kathy Matthews all made the irony of the light dark situations seem natural. This was a different kind of play and was very enjoyable for everyone! The Entire Cast 148 149 Oklahoma was the biggest production of the year. Before this, however the children's play The Wind in the Willows by John Stephens was performed much to the enjoyment of young and old alike. The group traveled to area schools and churches to put on the play for youngsters. Then the production everyone had been waiting for, the Rogers and Hammerstein musical Oklahoma which involved approximately 40 students and faculty members. The show was sold out every night and the cast received rave reviews from area critics. This play was also given at Spirit Square in Charlotte where it also received encouraging reviews. The main characters played by Deena Hester and Craig Estep were expertly done as were the parts of Ado Annie (Julie Wright) and Ali Hakim (Brent Gibbs). Fred Salancy had done it again and we look forward to all of Fred's future productions. 150 Deena Hester as Laurey 151 SPORTS I 1982 Soccer Team PFEIFFER COLLEGE SOCCER SCHEDULE 1982 DATE OPPONENT TIME SITE Sep. 10-1 1 N C. The Pfeiffer hooters were 4— 2—1 in the conference, good enough for a third place tie. Pfeiffer goalie Donnie Winkler had a good year only allowing 30 goals in 17 games. Freshman Bobby Cole received MVP Honors. For his efforts. Coach Gompers was named both Conference and District Coach of the Year. S' I 155 156 The 1982-83 Women's Field Hockey Team First year coach Nancy Mac Dade's Women's Field Hockey Team had an excellent year despite posting a deceiving 7—6 record. Five of their six losses were at the hands of Division I opponents such as Duke, UNC, and Virginia Tech. Sophomore Beth Connors led the Lady Falcons offensively with 11 goals and 5 assists. Defensively, goalie Karen Oakley was a standout limiting the opposition to only 24 goals. With the graduation of MVP Carol Durkin being the only loss, the Lady Falcons should be tougher next year. They did very well, however, in tournaments. As a team, they placed fourth in the NCAA regionals and fourth again in the Conference tournament. Junior heavy weight standout, Bruce Lambert wound up with a 33—4 record and 27 pins. Bruce won All-American Honors in both the NCAA and NAIA. Nationally, Pfeiffer finished 16th in the NCAA and 23rd in the NAIA. Senior veteren Ken Budd won MVP honors and was selected the male recipient for the Sportsmanship Award. 160 161 Coach Tom Childress stepped down this season as head coach of the Men's Varsity Basketball Team after 16 years of service. Childress' Falcons had a very good year posting an overall record of 15—11, with a 10—4 Conference record. High scoring honors went to junior William Milteer (540 pts.) and senior Horace Fauntleroy (461 pts). Freshman starter Mikey Moody added good ball handling and quickness to the offense. For their efforts, Milteer and Fauntleroy received All-Conference and All-District Honors. Assistant Coach John Lentz will assume head coaching duties for the Falcons next season. We wish him luck in maintaining the fine basketball tradition laid forth by Coach Childress. And to Tom Childress we wish the best of everything. Thanks for a great 16 years. Coach Childress. Standing: James Carlin, Frank Kelly, Mark Honecker, Jim Dugan, Coach Max Bristol. Head Coach Max Bristol's J.V. Men's Basketball Team had a dissappointing season record wise, but faced an uphill battle throughout the season, facing mostly Varsity competition from area community colleges. Co- captains Jim Dugan and Arlen Pegg led the team in scoring. This team worked very hard all season in practice and during game time and deserves substantial recognition. 169 1982-83 Women's Injuries and illnesses hampered the Lady Falcons and first year coach Jackie Myers' attempts at a .500 season. The young Lady Falcon basketball squad posted a 9-13 record, but faired much better than their pre-season pick to finish last. Beck moved from centerfield to shortstop to replace injured Carol Coble, and Lanning finished the year with a 15-8 pitching record after missing the first six games because of injury. Kelly Alvadj (outfield) and Kris McCowan (outfield) both played game after game of errorless ball throughout the season. The team record of 10-11-1 left Coach Ferebee one victory short of the six- hundred mark for his college career. Of the twenty-two games played, the Falcons played only one on campus as field draining problems forced them to play elsewhere. Pfeiffer finished strong, winning four out of their last five games, posting a 7-5-1 Conference record and an 8-7-1 District mark. Four Falcons received post season honors. Seniors Mike Downs and Doug O'Brey were both named to the All-Conference Team. Downs hit .422 with 32 RBI'S and 7 homers. O'Brey hit .409 with 30 RBI'S and 4 homers. The three years that I have been editor I have learned more about people and how to deal with them than I ever did before. It has definitely been a learning experience. For once there was a staff to work with, and overall things went much better. I would like to say a special thank you to Mr. Larry Sides, our representative, he helped above and beyond the call of duty as did Jeff DeBoy, my better half, who spent hours working with me on the book. I thank these two special people along with Dr. Echols and Dean Westcott who gave advice that was greatly appreciated. A deep thanks goes to Richard Lafferty who listened to me complain and got me pictures when I needed them and also to Larry Durrett for his help on the sports section. All in all this is a good book, it could be better, but the improvement I leave upon Judy O'dell who will take over for me next year. I hope that everyone enjoys the book and in years to come will find many fond and joyous memories within its pages. Thank You!
