WWW . 4 I I II I 'I 6 7 ORIENTATION 1979 Dean Allen and the 1979 Orientation Committee The girls dorms? First you cross the railroad tracks ... Freshmen meet Faculty at the picnic. President and Mrs. West decide to join in. Everybody gets to know each other at the dance. 10 J As I prepare to graduate from Pfeiffer College, 1 am reminded of the many events and happenings that 1 experienced. Pfeiffer College has had a profound impact on me and my outlook on life. As 1 leave, I can say that I take with me fond memories of a place and its people whom I so richly love. College can teach and provide one with so many activities ranging from how to detect a subject — verb agreement error to how to solve a difficult algebraic equation. However, the most important aspect Pfeiffer has provided me is contact with people, simply human communication. Through dealing with and living so close to other people, I am beginning to learn how to be patient, how to be more tolerant of the viewpoints of other people, and how to be more loving and caring. Not only do Pfeiffer students, faculty, etc. pull together in a time of crisis, they seem always to stay together. Furthermore, by serving as President of the Student Government Association, I have seen people work diligently together. My four years at Pfeiffer constantly remind me of a motto I try to live by: “Every man is my superior in that I may learn from him.” That give and take of ideas, knowledge, and experience is so important in college life and Pfeiffer is no different. I truly believe that one learns by doing and listening. This thought I will carry with me for as long as I live. — Everette L. Webb eth Barton Secretary SGA and Everett Webb President SGA 13 Holidays ... away from home isn’t easy for students out of state or those only a few minutes from home. Pfeiffer has it’s own unique way of battling against holiday homesickness though. With Halloween contests and Williamsburg Christmas each person joins in the work. With our two magic ingredients, love and togetherness, the work often becomes fun and if you’re not careful the holiday spirit and a smile will sneak up on you. Our distinguished hostess Guess who’s coming to dinner?” Epicure sponsors jack o’ lantern contest. 14 this is really starting to look good' lot to go up how much higher?!” “Who knew this much work could be this much fun! We even have our own reindeer. Chris Jackson and Mark Brown 123 From the Desk of Dr. Nancy McLaurin One winter afternoon in 1957 I grabbed the jangling telephone and heard the voice of a friend and former colleague. Dr. Hoyt E Bowen: “Would you like to teach up here?” My mind clinging fiercely to the phrase my typewriter was spewing forth onto the page of my dissertation, I muttered “Yes.” Click-click. Both phones went dead. Pushing the conversation to the back of my mind and then out completely, I sank slowly into the morass of Ph.D. prose composition. Severed months later, as I was typing the last chapter of that magnum opus, exhausted but triumphant, Mr. J. Griffin Campbell, former member of our graduate student triumvirate suffering the ordeal of Ph.D.-itis (but for the last year a Scholar Gypsy strayed to teach at Pfeiffer College), stepped gingerly through the door on which was Scotch-taped a hand-printed sign: “Hell Hole Swamp —Dead End!” in the English building at U. S. C. and laid some books on the comer of the desk nearest the door. “Here are the books you are to teach.” “Teach!” “Yes. See you in Misenheimer Monday morning for faculty workshop.” And out he went, leaving shock waves of dumb panic shrieking protests until they crashed. Misenheimer. But where in the name of geographical consternation was Mis- enheimer! Wait, now, wasn’t there a story that a man at HEW had hung up the phone in sheer disbelief when informed that Holshouser from Pfeiffer in Misenheimer was calling? It must be on a map somewhere. And it was and is. I got here with two hours to spare. And here I have remained. Before the decade of the fifties ended, I was firmly entrenched among the female faculty members known as “The Un- matched Remnants,” one of whom annually requested permission to teach the course in Marriage and the Family. After all, she maintained, SHE had never had a failure in marriage and that should be qualification enough. Meanwhile, on “Pregnancy Row,” later dignified by the official title of Memer Drive, the inhabitants were busily producing a large portion of future Pfeiffer students for the ’70’s and ’80’s. On campus, the English faculty and some students created a writing club from whose labors was born the PHOENIX (full grown? Never!); we watched dormitories rise from the red mud on the “wrong” side of Highway 52, heard a student campaign for P. S. G. (and lose) on the slogan “Cold Beer and Hot Water” and cheered Pfeiffer's achieving Senior College Accreditation. The sixties roared in, and the “Media” proclaimed Pfeiffer “integrated” after we added a black woman to our white, In- donesian, Oriental, and Amerindian student body. As the decade rioted along, we saw the AIM program emerge and develop, Option Two metamorphose into the Supplementary Program, and enrollment burst the 1000-digit barrier. Our students included many who reacted affirmatively to our innovative programs, students who passively accepted them, and students who railed against them. Faculty members protested at times, cheered at times, but valiantly adapted and adjusted to the requirements of the age. I recall one professor who met his initial AIM class, assigned a project to each student, announced the hours he would be in his office each week for individual discussions of progress in research and organizing of ideas. He sat and waited — and waited —and waited. At the end of the semester he was still waiting for most of the students. A few—yes, a very few —had responded to the challenge, some brilliantly. But where were the others? In all areas, creativity exploded —blowing some intellects into greater response, shocking others into stunned acceptance, and chiding others for bull-headed resistance. But the sixties smoothed out into the tranquil (comparatively speaking) seventies; more presidents came and went; the faculty retreated toward the conventional and traditional bastions so recently decried as “establishment” and wondered how we dared venture so far into left-field experimentation. A few facets of our innovative energies did remain as proof of excellence in the Great Experiment: our “new” composition program, with its early releases, its semester grade carry- overs, and its novel use of student assistants as tutorial aides in each class, won national acclaim by being selected as one of twenty-five in the nation to be featured in a book entitled Options for the Teaching of English. By the end of the decade this course, too, had served its purpose and, as students entered Pfeiffer less well prepared in writing skills, yielded to the more conventional course, or two semesters of writing, traditional style. Many of the best innovatively creative course ideas, perhaps modified and remodified, remained to challenge new students, such as the culturally awakening and horizon-widening Backgrounds to Literature, a truly interdisciplinary-idea course. In classes, student participation is still expected, even required, by the same professors who two decades ago lectured solidly for fifty minutes, non-stop, every other day. Directed studies, special topics, and other individualized programs remain to challenge the student of the ’80’s. And now as Pfeiffer College begins its trek through the 1980’s, having “recalled” former Pfeiffer professor, then Academic Dean Cameron West to assume the Presidency, we wonder what the next years will bring. Will the student of this decade so continue the trend toward money-making pursuits, forgetting all else, that his “earth-creeping mind ... cannot lift itself up to look to the sky of poetry”? If so, perhaps he deserves Sidney’s curse upon him that “while you live, you live in love, and never get favor for lacking skill of a sonnet and when you die, your memory dies from earth for want of an epitaph.” However, to be as lenient as Sidney, we will not wish this pursuer of materialistic gain “the ass’s ears of Midas”; nor do we hope that he is driven “by a poet’s verses ... to hang himself, nor to be rhymed to death.” And as I won- der whether the student of the ’80’s will have any interest in the enrichment of his soul, in aesthetic values to draw upon at the end of a frustrating day of being a cog in a wheel (a cog that gets a fat check) I am certain that some things will remain unchanged: Registration snafus Faculty meetings Students in the fall trailing after a botany professor who leads them from tree to tree while they eye the members of the oposite sex instead of the fall flora Medieval gowns, marching in due pomp and circumstance to graduations, professors counting both magna cum laude and laude how cum Self studies to lead towards re-certification or re-accreditation Abominable spelling in student papers and in signs on campus walls and bulletin boards Students who seem to get younger each year. At the Student Center mem- bers of the Concert Choir had a Rock-a-Thon to help finance their summer trip to Europe. 130 Mike Broom Mike Broom James Durst 131 ii 132 Tim Settini-Mime DRACULA X 134 AN EVENING OF ONE ACTS The Dirty Old Man 135 EVENING OF ONE ACTS Sandbox 136 AN EVENING OF ONE ACTS Isn’t This A Day For Surprizes? 137 John Soud Presents A TRIBUTE TO THE ARTS j; i J I 138 Ilii ‘If,, John Celeste Soud 139 SNOW WHITE I 140 141 142 Every day is life. Life is the only wordly possession that is priceless. General health is second in importance. Everyday that is not lived to the fullest is partially wasted. Unused days are lost forever. You define your lives by how you use your time. Some uses of time are more valuable than others. What are your priorities? What are your plans for the rest of your lives? What are your plans for tomorrow? What are you doing now? Without things to achieve every day, life has little meaning. Good thoughts not expressed have little worth. Give compliments and flowers to others when they are alive, not at their funeral. Loving concern for parents, spouse, children, and friends must be communicated if they are to benefit from it. Support your leaders when their behaviors are just; challenge them when their behaviors are unjust. You are an important model whose behavior some others will imitate. What are you teaching? If we could or would truly live in Christian community most human problems would be solved. Almost all mental and physical illnesses are the result of the lack of love and of defective human relationships. I once heard an important leader commend a retiring minister for never having rocked-the-boat. Live your life so that no one will ever be able to say that about you. Edward E. William Kelly Billings My first year here at Pfeiffer has been worthwhile. The transition from high school to college has been hard but through the help of the people here, the transition has been easier to make. All the teachers are con- cerned with the individual student and this surprised me. This year was hard but worthwhile. Anne Henderson My first year has been interesting, to say the least. 1 have grown up very much. It’s been hard, fun, and emotionally draining — I’ll be back Craig Estep Pfeiffer College is the epitome of what a college should be — the fellowship, love, concern, and the general acquaintance with everyone means something very special to me. This institution will always be a reflection on my life in the future. Karen Meeks I just appreciate the feeling of familiarity among everyone who is Pfeif- fer College. I have found a sense of belonging — something I wasn’t so sure I’d find. I feel a freedom to be myself here; I both gain and give which is essential to being happy. Bob Stroud God blessed me very much by being able to be enrolled in Pfeiffer College. This semester has meant very much in my life. I’ve grown and experienced college life as God wants us to experience life. Christine Wilson When I first arrived at Pfeiffer, I experienced a fear of my professors and classmates. My fears soon subsided when I realized the professors were here to help me reach my goals in life instead of slavedriving me. My classmates were also experiencing these very same fears, and this fear helped bond us all together. Michael Howell My first year here at Pfeiffer was a learning year. I became adjusted to college life and learned to study, using abilities I have possessed for a long time, but have just now developed. I have begun to apply these studies in furthering my education in the field I wish to pursue. Robin Whitley As I reflect on this past year I see that the tarnished security that I thought God had taken away at graduation was only taken to be polished into something as beautiful as college life on a Christian campus. Craig Lowry It was all right. The upper classmen seemed to accept us real easily. Brian Starrette This year was short. It was like a diesel locomotive — it started slowly, but after it got started, there was no stopping it. Tim Herrin Living on campus this year has helped me to learn a great deal about people in addition to what I have learned in my classes. Craig Melton When I first arrived at Pfeiffer, I was filled with fear. Now that I am ac- quainted with Pfeiffer’s atmosphere and people, I have overcome my fear. I now anticipate continuing my education at Pfeiffer. It was a great year. I’ve wasted so much paper writing and rewriting this ‘Editor’s Acknowledgements’. So now I’ve decided to just sit here at my typewriter and say how I feel about this book and it’s making. I’m sure most of you know how bitter I could be. The budget cuts, the lack of support from the stu- dent body, the break-in into the dark room and office, the senseless stealing of our photography equip- ment and our petty cash — all of these things made things tough for us. The last straw for me could be expressed in one sentence — when the going gets tough everybody but the editor quits. When my staff and assistant editor quit I decided that if Pfeiffer students didn’t care enough to help me with this book there didn’t have to be a book. I made my feelings known to the entire campus. At first I was overwhelmed at the hundreds of students who offered to help. It seemed that I wouldn’t have to do this alone. Within a few weeks those hundreds vanished. Only a few were left. We were back to square one. I still had half the book to do and it was April. The people I would like to thank are Keith McWhorter for helping after exams were over, and Paul DeFerrari for the same reason. I would like to give a big thanks to Mark Futrell. Even though he still had the Pheonix to do he found time to give me support that kept me working. Richard Hemmer deserves a great deal of thanks. He was my one and only reliable photographer and was always available to work on deadlines. I don’t know who it was that sent over all the information and pictures for the sports section but whoever you are I am very grateful! The sports section would have been empty without it. Now I would like to extend a few apologies. The first goes to my representative Bernie Lessard and Delmar for my continually late deadlines. The next is to some of the athletes who made major accom- plishments but were not pictured in the sports section. If I had had your pictures I would have put you in. I’d like to apologize for the sports section in general. The pictures were pretty horrible but they were all I had. Much of the book followed along the same line. I didn’t have a lot of pictures I should have had and some I had weren’t really worth having. Another big apology goes to my friends, especially Paige Albertson, Kathy Chodorowski, Steve Manly, Sharon Bard and Griff Campbell, who listened to my constant complaining about this book. I don’t know how they withstood it all.
