You must see to believe. You must know to understand. You, who have taken part in Pfeiffer know what it is to laugh at idiosyncrasies that cannot be overlooked, to smile at mistakes, and to accept the imperfections of our school. There are those who will promise perfection to gullible young graduates, but we know what is here for the asking and most of us can accept it. We are a far-reaching circle, a U-tum in the rain, screeching wildly at times, spinning silently at others. Most important of all is our quiet knowledge that we are special, in our own special way. 5 Anonymous BEGINNINGS In the beginning we seek perfection an error understood 10 KSSffiSS 12 n 13 14 '. ! « |M( ..! ‘1 l • - S V r U. s 'v:t s Kt « . .• ■ . .. «. ,« ,. x X• ■ ■ i' w 'T1 ti• j dr • •• ; v •• .1 •• V' •; • r' •.«• Utt i i • XU •• Kjv. .•••: ,vc r . • ► . Songs get you nowhere in the real world. And the brightly colored palace guards threw Prince out the window. Brightly colored handkerchiefs waved down at him while we love you was chanted from farther and farther away. Prince, gazing around him, spat on the ground, because he was scared. But that story makes no sense, I said to simon says. We are not songs. And he is not a story, simon says said. Prince turned and walked as is usual, over and under hills and mountains and rivers and seas, etc. The difference in this case was that this Prince felt pain, and he wanted to know when he could go home. In and out of the usual adventures with princesses, three wishes, flying, and talking cats — very interesting, but Prince could find no real meaning in it all. simon says closed the book. Is that all? I was surprised. It’s an old story, the kind everyone knows but nobody tells, simon says tells me to choose, in a certain order, acceptable op- tions, right in a row, right down the line, and grabs my root-of-all-evil away to himself all the while, as fast as he can. simon says has a bad reputation and insists on my acting like a grownup while treating me like a child, simon says has many faces — a hard-to-accept but true fact that is often forgotten. But, if I listen very very carefully, he tells me stories that let slip secrets. What happened to Prince? Why do you expect me to know? simon says returned. You're the storyteller, aren’t you? Sometimes I am, simon says confessed, but sometimes I’m not and the story tells me. When The Prince told his father he wanted to work in the dirt, the King laughed. My son the farmer, a prince of the Realms! But Prince had been booted out very suddenly into a world full of princes. And what is wrong with a little dirt? We live on dirt, simon says reflected. We breathe dust that is dirt, we eat food from dirt, and our lovliest scenery is not more than dirt piled on dirt. Learn to live with it. Prince wandered around in all this dirt highly depressed Life was full of dirt, he contemplated, but it’s not much fun, except every once and a while. He had learned from the seventh — or was it the eighth? — talking fox he’d met that once he decided on a course of action and went for it, he would forget all about being lonely and lost. (This is quite true, never be still or you will remember again.) But Prince didn’t know what he wanted to decide, etc., etc., so he went from elf to elf, hoping to find a magic kingdom whose golden glow was not accompanied by an enormous electric bill ... I was scribbling hard, trying to copy all this down, certain that there was great knowledge in it for me. After all, simon says had age and a position of authority to prove he knew something. simon says laughed very hard at me. Then he cried into his hands. Not until an evil magician captured Prince and forced him to sit by himself for years upon years in the usual, but extremely unpleasant, moldy dungeon, was Prince any semblance of content. To keep from losing his sanity (bad form in any fairy tale) Prince was forced to think. So he thought. When finally free, Prince was an older man. Was it the years of thinking that aged him? The book had long ago feathered away to gray ashes while simon says told the story from memory. Is that all? I asked when he stopped. What else do you need to know? That’s a terrible story! Princes always know what they have to do. They go out and become heroes. simon says wouldn’t look at me, but sighed. In every fairy tale, the manchild or the womanchild who sets out does merely that. He sets out. He follows where his roads lead, makes his decisions according to the circumstances that come up, and just tries to do the best he— You talk in worn out rhythms. What about the happily ever after past? It’s an old story, simon says told me sadly. There are no new things I can tell you. Sea tides of the shore we sat on came in and went out, over and over again, never, never ceasing. Our strong hot fire licked itself more and more feebly. You just have to get straight in your mind: some things are done already and are as they are, some things are up to you. I stared around. Dark rags of clouds waved above me while the wind blew them farther and farther away. It only looks black because you’re in the dark, it's nighttime, simon says comforted. Really, there’s a lot of bright colors here. I spat on the ground. To me, it has been a home for six years. I came to Pfeiffer way back in August of 1973. Back then a load of wash was a quarter and open dorms was supposed to mean leaving your door ajar when you had visitors. I have seen a lot of changes in those six years, and now as I look towards graduation with anticipation, I have many fond remembrances. Being a “Yankee” it took me a while to get used to southern accents, blackeyed peas and grits. What didn’t take any time getting used to was the friendliness and genuine warmth so many people showed me. I was also quickly warmed by the climate and the beauty of both the campus and the state. The beauty of Pfeiffer in the spring, the chapel spire rising above campus and the sun setting down the “tracks” will always be in my memory. As I leave I will also take with me thoughts of the lake, with its hungry ducks, and the rare beauty of Pfeiffer under a blanket of snow. It is easy to lose the character of the campus in the tensions of exams, term papers and living in the dorm but the beauty is always out there. It takes just a moment to see it. As a student, I didn’t learn as much through class lecture as I did through living among people in a dorm and as having discussions on all subjects with all types of people. Pfeiffer broadened my horizons on people and the world. It is where I learned to love and share in friendship. Pfeiffer is far from perfect. I remember many times of discouragement trying to make it a better place. But in six years and through many people, I have developed a love for this campus that will always be with me. I can look to May with anticipation but also with some sadness, for a part of me will always be in Misenheimer. Thank you ... If The Chimes makes all its deadlines, you’ll first look at this page during the hectic hopefilled heartbreak of Commencement Week. You’ll glance at it — and pass on to devour the pictures and share the pungency of briefer words. That week, you’ll probably not read. Next year, perhaps, or the year after that, a sense of homesickness Tor Pfeiffer will rise out of nowhere to surprise you. Then you’ll brush Ithe dust off the covers of this book, leaf through, and perhaps take itime to read as memories unroll. Twenty more years will pass before you, in sending your oldest off to school, will want to “recapture that first, fine, careless rapture of college days as a link with your almost-lost liebling. Again, you will un- earth The Chimes from its burial place and you will linger with long- ing and laughter upon pages that by then will have become fantasy to you. As you read — you of the future (seasoned by the workaday world, by responsibility and love and grief and hope fulfilled and hope deferred too long) — what then of Pfeiffer days will flood back into your mind? I prophesy: DORMS I Forgotten will be the overcrowding and the peeling paint. Even those mass invasions of the insect world (they are the fit who will sur- v vive!) will be only a smile. What you will recreate will be the sound of unprompted laughter, the scurrying feet and snickers forerunning a practical joke, candles on a cake, a guitar played softly down the hall, the all-night rap ses- sion when you found your unexpected Self expressing aloud a deeply-held conviction and — still caught in your first surprise — saw 3 a responsive flash light the eyes of a dorm mate till this moment a 3 stranger but now, of a sudden, a part of you. CAFETERIA Whether or not you could identify with any certainty the exact origins of the food put before you will no longer matter. Aesthetics will be a forgotten issue, and food fights will mean to you only in terms of who was involved in them. What will matter to you looking back in the din of human voices rising above the clatter of cutlery and the kitchen hiss of steam: voices of people you knew and yet did not know, people you liked or distrusted or pitied or respected, but whose lives were inextricably woven into the fabric of yours for four years: Community Communion. 1 prophesy that grades will be insignificant and test-sweat but a momentary memory of your palm. Unless you’ve put them to daily use, once-vital words like “hypotenuse or “scapula or iambic pen- tameter will bring only a ghostlike half-image to your brain. But those words first leapt at you from living faces and lively brains you remember as if it were yesterday. Whether you liked them or loathed them, your teachers helped to forge you by the simple power of being who they were. Surging back into your life again you, remembering a Manly with that eternally unlit pipe and that eternally-open-till-midnight-7-days-a-week door and that integrity which gave him power to sit still when an un- justified ovation swept others to unthinking feet ... or you, remembering a Gore — What was the name of her course? with her probing eyes that sensed when Whatserface was torn to pieces by her breakup with that guy with her tact that taught you how to handle pain whose wee hours’ trip to campus when you called that Whatserface was threatening to ohdee told you more about teaching than a million maxims might. Name them as their lifestyles search your eyelids: the one whose car was parked by the chapel from 6:30 in the morning till “when” at night...... the one who came to teach his class on crutches and whose face was grey at the hour’s end_______ she whose standards would be higher than Mount Everest even if times had changed and changed........ he who lost eight pounds in one rehearsal____ another, the only male in his church choir for six or seven years.... and yet another who asked for his Milton text the third day after his heart had stopped beating. If the medium is the message, what have you heard? “What is life all about? What is important? What can you live without? Who are you choosing now to be? Who will you be becoming as you choose? Keep learning! Keep growing! Keep teaching! What did you learn from us who taught you at Pfeiffer? I prophesy you will remember not dull abstractions like “discipline — devotion — duty — growth — humor — faith, but flesh — and — blood with names like “Starr — Shreyer — Schaffer — Lefko — Poolos — Faggart. In 1981 or 1982 or even in that bi-millenial Year of Our Lord — when you read this and ponder who you have become, tell me: What of us is still alive in you? Do we still touch you, teach you, where it’s real? Does God still move toward you through us? And what of us have you passed on to whom? Melicent Fluneycutt [: 179 v V . . °'u. «0 '.N Vy-. 180 181 185 A Reflection on College On August 21, 1975, I began four of the most impressionable years of my life. Like a child on Christmas morning, I was happy and excited that early morning when I arrived on campus. The atmosphere of this new home offered a freedom which I had never before experienced. The potential of the years ahead was limitless. New friends and new ideas made college much more than an academic experience. The education outside the classroom was just as important as the education inside the classroom. Living, working, laughing, playing, crying, and sharing were elements which drew me closer to my friends. Before I realized it, I was calling Pfeif- fer my home. Now on the brink of graduation, I see that soon I must leave my home. In one sense I am happy, in another, I am not. I am glad to graduate, but I do not want to part with my friends. Nevertheless the time has come, I must make my mark on the world. Wherever I go, I will always remember the four years at Pfeiffer College, my home. Gary Junker 187 ■ 188 191 ENDINGS And in the endings we see perfection is impossible to create For there is always a beginning that is there for you to start 192 PP «35, Bye Pop ... 195 Perhaps at the beginning of the year there were those who already were thinking of what friends would be gone at the onset of the next semester. There were however, a vast majority of people who said good-bye to people who they thought would be returning. This small section is to honor and remember those people who have been a part of Pfeiffer College for many years. It is sad, yet so like life itself, to have to go on living in a place that has been secure with the presence of these people. Maybe there were those of you who were not touched in some way by one or more of these good people. You can bet that you’re in the minority on Pfeiffer’s campus. Although we didn't say good-bye to those on the men’s swimming team, we did see the end of the team itself for the year. This was sad in that there were those who were genuinely interested in the sport. Each member deserved more than just a pat on the back, as all our athletes do, but in this case they were almost forgotten by those who were so needed. It’s not too late to thank them for being a part of Pfeiffer’s sports for the 1978-1979 academic year. The members were; Brian Jefferis, Joe Pan- ichello, Lester Guthrie, Greg Rothwell, Dave Dunwoody, Kevin Murphy, Bill Peed, Chuck Harrington, Mark Kaylor, Ellis Smith. Saying good-bye to Nick Lefko is perhaps one of the hardest things for many people on this campus. Question; Who in the world is going to lead the class of 1980 into graduation? I guess that isn’t the most important part of this story. Nick Lefko has touched so many lives while being at Pfeiffer. With a smile on his face for everyone who crossed his path, he was and is one of the kindest and most sincere persons that any of us will ever meet. Iris Hill worked in the Snack Bar for many, many years. As a matter of fact, she came over to the stu- dent center with the ice machine that was in the for- mer snack bar when Stokes Student Center was first opened. You can figure out the years from that. She retired quietly, having respect for all of us. It’s hard to say good-bye to someone you really care about without making a fool of yourself. She didn’t want to put us through that. This year wasn’t the same without her, as it never will be. 196 For those who panicked at the beginning of every year as to whether they would get enough money to even be a part of Pfeiffer, Tommy Aldridge was a welcome sight. For a few years there were those students who depended on Tommy for all financial help. Tommy did the work of at least three people in the financial aid office. He will be sorely missed. Walter Gibson is leaving Pfeiffer. Maybe Mr. Gib- son is more familiar to his fellow workers than to Pfeiffer students. Those of us who ever had to deal with him on a business level or just in a money tran- saction knew that he was friend- ly and could be depended on to help us any way he could. Pfeiffer College's finest will miss him very much. There were many people on campus who depended on Mickie Baxter for not only help and information, but also for her warm smiles. All of us could tell how sincere she was in her wish for all of us to feel welcome and secure. Jane Balfrey made a decision to move on to bigger and better things this year. Maybe her fan club is a different group but there is one thing that is certain. Jane gave something of herself to Pfeiffer as a student and then as an employee. Pfeiffer will have to go a long way before they come close to finding another ‘real’ as Jane. 197 Dean Jones said good-bye to an almost empty campus. Because she didn’t announce her resigna- tion until summer school was already in session, many people never got a chance to say good-bye. Perhaps it’s just as well. How long have so many depended on her? Six years is a long line of people. She touched many lives during her stay at Pfeiffer. For those people who were a part of her life, you will be missed by her. “Dean Jean moved on to Clayton Junior College in Morrow, Georgia. There will be many people who will miss her. Watching food services go by may not seem like a big thing to a lot of people, but the people who run the cafeteria have a big job on their hands. Well this time we’re not saying good-bye to a whole ser- vice, just one person. Jim, who has been the Assis- tant Manager for a year, is moving on. There were plenty of people who recognized that Jim was friendly and easy to get along with. All of us are “blessed with the course Backgrounds to Literature. There was a one out of four or five chance that you had Ms. Raper. To most students, that meant a good understanding of the material (after a few weeks of semi- backbreaking work). As she retires, she will take with her good memories of excellent students, good students and a few bad students. But all of us, regardless of how we fared, will remember her fondly. “Pop” Dry we all called him. There won’t be many freshmen who will remember him, but almost all of the upperclassmen and certainly the whole community thought of Misenheimer as incomplete without “Pop” around. He has surely been missed this year. 198 Dr. Schreyer retired this year. We watched him go with mixed emotions. It was an unspoken fact that many, many people were touched by this man at some point during his Pfeiffer career. His Chris- tian inspiration filled the lives of a great many stu- dents. He went on to part-time teaching. I guess it’s hard to imagine Dr. Schreyer doing anything without putting everything into it, full time. I guess this section would be incomplete without mentioning all the graduates in the class of 1979. They were the last class of the seventies. Pfeiffer will probably feel the quiet of the spot that they filled. Every graduating class has its share of “characters”, but this class was over-blessed. We watched a lot of unique people walk across the stage this year. It will be hard for the class of 1980 to top them. We all watched the “beginning” of the new Highway 52. We take with us as we leave a piece of Pfeiffer that future students will never have. As a major changing force in Stanly County, the new road will bring many good things, and probably some bad things to Pfeiffer. We can say that we were a part of it. As always, there will be those who should have been mentioned. Sorry. Maybe we can sum this up by saying that Pfeiffer is changing. Most of us can figure out why if we think about it long enough. There are those people who have stopped caring about quality at Pfeiffer. They think in terms of “me . Well, we'll just have to change that. We’ve lost so many good, good people this year, some who really hated to go but just felt like they couldn’t stay. Maybe those of us left need to question the reasons for the “endings”. Maybe not. It is a private decision. But now is a good time to start. Now, in the endings of this year at Pfeiffer. 199 INDEX Kevin Biglin. 151 Hawthorne Drive Mt. Holly, NJ. Biology. Soccer. The Chimes, Please print this note for those who follow us, the graduates, that we may share with them some of the truths and values gained here at Pfeiffer College on our path to purpose and happiness. Yes, I do remember some facts from this course and that one and I do remember that I liked philosophy better than math (even though I still think 2 + 2=4). However, that which 1 recall is not necessarily taught in the text books or tested at the end of the semester. Rather, I’ve something unseen which has been touched, caressed, hurt, ignored, lost and gained several times. It is the reality of joy, tears, love, friends, knowledge of knowledge, smiles, coping with the down- ers of life and finding there’s an up sooner or later, endurance, trust, faith, frustration and accomplishment, new adventure and opportunity, a little patience and just re- cently a little direction. But there’s just one more. If you as followers can find the time to say “I’ve gained some of this’’ then your college experience has been worth the money and time. Don McClain once told me “take time to grow’’. I believe that! Dream and some will come true. And if you’ve experienced some of the above, then you’ve grown and are well on your way to new adventure and your dreams. Seek to be used rather than to be saved! For me this past year has been very rewarding and interesting. A college yearbook is a major source of memories for many years. While working on this book I tried to keep that in mind. Though it is impossible to please all of the students all of the time 1 think this book comes pretty close. I must admit that wasn’t easy. Too many people were willing to tell us what they didn’t want and too few were willing to tell us what they did want. Still there were many good times. Those times and the people I shared them with will always be a part of my memories. I would like to say ‘thank-you’ to the people who worked on the book and those who supported them. A special thanks goes to Cat. If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t be writing this. Another special thanks goes to the head photographer Leslie. She gave up a lot of sleep for the pictures in this book. Dee, Paul and Sharon also get large thank-you’s, not only for their staff work, but also for their friendship. Of course an extra big thank-you very much goes to Griff for his love and support and the last minute faculty pictures he took. 206 I owe so much to so many I hardly know where to begin. I guess I’ll start with my teacher. In 1976 I was taken as a protege by Don Sherrow. Without my complete knowledge, he was training me for a future job as editor of the yearbook. I don’t think I minded, for I learned eagerly the tricks of the trade. Everything I know about the technology of putting a yearbook together, I learned from Don. I made a lot of mistakes in the beginning, but I learned a lot. One of the reasons I kept on going was the Rec Rats. They were my elders my freshman year. Steve Boles, Steve Morgan, Jane Balfrey, Danny Ross, Emily Self... the list goes on. They seemed to have faith in me. Whether they did or not, I felt that they did. That’s the most important part. I owe them a lot. The Family has always given me private strength. I guess Pete Kouba is behind most of that. He taught me the meaning of the word honesty. Without him I don’t think I would have turned out to be a very nice person. Of course that’s always a matter of opinion. Each member of the family has touched my life in some way. I love them all. As for this year’s staff, as always there were bad times and good times. 1 had some private conflicts this year and I think I can say that I learned from them. The yearbook took its toll from all of my problems. I hope it doesn’t show too badly. As my Associate Editor, Lucy Ulissi was very sup- portive. I know the book could not have been finished without her support. She stood by me dur- ing some pretty rough times. I know at times it was very hard for her not to take sides in some conflicts but she really is a pretty neat person. Doug Terry was my assistant Editor. I guess things could have turned out a lot better if we had both kept an open mind. But life being what it is, there were some conflicts. I want to thank Doug for the time he put into the book. Without Leslie Harris much of the book would contain blank pages. She really put a lot of time into the book. Richard Lodge, Jamie Romansky and Fenton Childers had a lot of work put in the book. Their talent should take them a long way. The people who really wanted to work (Sharon, Paul, Dee, Kathy, you know who you are) are the ones who deserve the real thanks. They put down everything at any time to help with last minute work. They didn’t just do their work, they did other peo- ple’s work too. That’s dedication. To everyone I’d like to say thanks for putting up with us. Mrs. Newman, Mickie Baxter, Mrs. Holshouser, Dean Boone, and most of all (you were wondering where your name was) Dean Jones ... Thank-you all for your vast understanding of a panicky editor. I love you all. Oh and by the way, if anyone dares to call this “the duck book” ... 207 “Remember Genny, Anonymous Was A Woman.” If we must part Should someone ask Who's touched your heart Perhaps you’ll answer ... me.
