In your escape from large high rises in metropolitan areas, you reached the rolling hills of Stanly which have now become part of your life. You have come from as far away as Afghanistan, and from as near as the affectionately called “Uranian Circus,” in East Misenheimer. Weekends have been special times. It has been a mad rush on Fridays to see who would be first in “getting the hell out of Misenheimer.” Nevertheless, when all was said and done, a still quiet voice silently whispered in your mind, “I’d rather be in Misenheimer.” V Forward 3 Introduction 6 Candids 17 The Story Of Happenings 30 The Year 101 Things To Do In Misenheimer 50 Honoraries 65 Christian 68 Government 72 Activities Classes 76 Organizations Music 78 Social 86 Professional 88 Sports Competitive 97 Intramural 126 Underclassmen 129 People Seniors Administration 149 Faculty 174 Conclusion 193 Index 202 Table Of Contents 6 Stanly County 1 M. The following morning, Oct 2, a spirited crowd gathered for the annual carnival on the grounds of the front campus. Clubs and other organizations sponsored various booths ranging from plant sales to panning for gold. 30 I ' h V Homecoming Queen Jan Britain The alumni soccer game be an around 1:00 p. m. followed by the Homecoming game between Pfeiffer and Catawba at 4:00 p. m. Half time activities included the presentation of the court and the crowning of the queen. Later that night, Don McLean delighted a huge audience in a one and one half hour concert, which included many chart hits. 31 I Gold Rush ’77 i The College Union Board did a fine job of presenting Johnny Porazzo as main attraction for the semi-formal dance. Porazzo played many favorites, including his own arrangement of “The Piano Man.” Porazzo also included some original material that was soon to be released in a new album. On Saturday night, Don McLean in concert was staged by the C.U.B. in Merner Gym. McLean, recording artist on the United Artist record label, played a rendition of his greatest hits plus others that were included in his latest album. vr.'-'A, f . • - . Still yet, another dance was held in the old gym late Saturday night featuring UCSS Disco. 47 Commencement 1977 Sunday, May 15, 1977 closed the four years of study for many at Pfeiffer College. The day began with a Senior Breakfast held in the College dining room. Continuing, many Seniors greeted their family and friends preparing for the ceremonies that were about to begin. Statha Osborne, President of the Senior Class, and Douglas Reid Sasser, President of Pfeiffer College, were the planners and organizers for the commencement excer- cises which included musical selections from the Wind Ensemble and the Pfeiffer College Concert Choir. The Choir also sang two pieces which are traditional for Pfeiffer College Commencements, the Alma Mater, and The Anthem of Dedication by John Finley Williamson. The Commencement address was given by Dr. Leonard P. Barnett, a Methodist minister and long time friend of Pfeiffer College. Other events of Commencement were the an- nouncing of those who planned to further their studies, those who completed their studies with honors, and announcement by Don Sherrow, Editor of the Chimes, that the 1977 yearbook, which had not been dedicated in nine years would this year be dedicated by Chimes and the Class of 1977 to Mrs. Elmina Surratt. Nearing the close of commencement activities, the graduates of the Class of 1977 were inducted into the Alumni Association. 48 49 „ 101 Things To Do In Misenheimer Arrive Take A Bath Check P.O. I 68 The Christian Life Council, known campus wode as the CLC, began the year with a Fall retreat of over 50 to Garden City, South Carolina. While small groups explored “Christian individuality” and students involved themselves with sandcastles, volleyball, worship ser- vices, singing, skits, swimming, prayer, “keep away,” and all the rest, new friendships were formed and old ones renewed. That’s a large part of what the CLC is all about - providing opportunities for individuals to notice those around them - in terms of fellowship and service. The group provided for community needs through Lutheran Home Ministries, square dances, hay rides, speakers, and special services on Sunday mornings. Bringing together a large number of students of various philosophies but a shared faith, the CLC continues to come close to achieving its goal. This year our ministry was strengthened by Terry Matthews, our Chaplain Intern from Duke University. This year Dean Jean M. Jones served as the advisor of CLC during the Chaplain’s sabbatical. The ministries of the CLC were greatly enriched by the contributions of “Dean Jean.” She has been a constant source of encouragement and inspiration for which the members of the 1976-1977 Christian Life Council will always be grateful. 69 Kappa Chi Lisa Dry Jerry Smith Wes Sharpe Terry Huffines UMSM Amy Jennings Patty Oettinger Jan Price Jimmy Gulledge Baptist Student Union -JS Left to right: Rusty Russell, Joe Elam, Sid Turner, Lisa Boyle, Carmen Call, Everette Webb, Pat- ty Middleton, Jerry Castor, Laura Slaughter, Terri Huffines, Melody Campbell, Angie Vanderburg, Renee Kimmer, Debby McEady, Darrell Hathcock. i 70 -H. I 74 SGA Activities The ’76-77 Student Government Association, from committee chairmen to President, was composed of students who cared enough to get involved, and a chance for involvement is what the SGA offerred to all students. The year for the Executive Council, led by President Cecil Donahue, Vice President Carl Tyndall, Secretary Debbie Clark, and Treasurer Bill Greene, began in early April with countless meetings and planning sessions. Some student trips were: Mary Farmer and Pat Paterson to Washington D.C. for a Muscular Dystrophy conference, Bill Greene to Kansas City for a conference on Student Legal Rights, Carl Tyndall and Rick Ryan to Charleston for a Political Violence Conference, Jan Lookabill to Tennessee for an Orientation Conference, and eight delegates to the North Carolina Student Legislature in Raleigh. As is often the case, the ad- ministration’s work was behind the scenes. Hours and hours of meetings resulted in a revised constitution, the importance of which future ad- ministrations will appreciate for years. A full year for sure - filled with success and failure, rewards and disap- pointments, student support and student apathy, Administration coopera- tion and conflict. 75 Class Officers Seniors From BACK to FRONT: Presi- dent Statha Osborne; Vice Presi- dent Greg McCollister; Secretary Sarah Kalish; and Treasurer Bill Sparger. Cockfeathers The Pfeiffer News reported to- day that it is tired of having to print factual information, and would ascend to the level of a newer campus publication, Cockfeathers. The Editors of the News have been trying to avoid legitamate news coverage all year by reprinting “handouts” from the Public Relations office, and having their advisor write the sports news. Now the trend will be to follow the brilliant efforts of Cockfeathers. So, send your cards and letters to either The Pfeiffer News, (or our alternative publication, Cockfeathers) and let us here from you soon. WSPC is the Pfeiffer College AM radio sta- tion located at 580 on the AM dial. The station seeks to provide a varied format of music, discus- sion, and programming that will please the most discriminating listener. This year, the radio sta- tion asked the Communications Council to ap- prove a move to make WSPC an FM station. The change would make for a firmer and stricter for- mat, and the disc jocies would have to be licensed. This, it was felt, would provide more of an educational advantage for those who were in- terested in working with broadcast journalism. The major musical events this year were primarily in “disco”, a form of upbeated music which often included oldies from the fifties and the sixties with rearranged time signatures, and rhythms which lend themselves to the loose dancing of the period. The disc jockie was the star of the production, and the big band era, along with giant rock concerts, seemed to be over. ll 92 The Chimes is the yearbook of Pfeiffer College. Pfeiffer’s basketball coach Tom Childress was named Carolinas Conference “Coach of the Year’’ by his fellow coaches. This was the second occa- sion in the past three years that the honor has gone to coach Childress and the honor was well deserved. After suffering through a 6-20 season in 1975-76, coach Childress recruited four fine freshmen, three junior college transfers and one sophomore transfer to go with his four returning lettermen. His success in blending this talent turned the Falcons once again into Conference crown contenders. This year the Falcons placed two men . on the All-Carolinas Conference squacf' They were the Sophomore duo of Henry Panzer and Mike Epps. Panzer, a 6’9 center, led the Conference in rebounds with 13 snares a game. He was fifth in scoring with 17.3 points a game. Epps, a 6T guard, became eligible during the se- cond semester; he was named “player of the week” in the Conference twice in a row. In 17 games Epps totaled 377 points and let the Falcon scorers with a 22.2 average. He was second in Carolinas Conference scoring and was named to the NAIA All-District 26 basketball squad. The Falcons forged a 14-8 regular season record and went into their final game tied for first place in the Conference with a chance to win the crown outright. We failed, but finished third in the Conference with a 6-4 record. This was Pfeiffer coach, Peggy Rogers' first win as a varsity coach. The only damper on the evening was a knee injury to Falcon star guard Robin Simp- son. Robin returned to action for a game against Lenoir Rhyne in January. Her presence inspired the Falcons to a tremendous effort that just fell short as Pfeiffer lost 69-66. LR had earlier defeated the Falcons by 20 points. With Simpson back in the line up, the Lady Facons trounced Elon, Wade Forest and Pembroke State. The Falcons lost a close game to unbeaten High Point to run their record to 8-6. Kim Dunlye, a 5T1 guard was named to the All-NCAIAW Div. II squad by the Div. II coaches. Kim averaged 22 points and 11.1 rebounds a game. Her high scoring and rebounding enabled an injury plagued Pfeiffer squad to forge a respectable 10-10 record overall and 6-4 in the Division. She was the top scorer in Div. II and ranked se- cond in rebounding. J. V. The small Pfeiffer squad broke several pool records and set nine school marks. Breastroker Mercy Garcia set new marks in the 50 and 100 yard events. The Pfeiffer men overwhelmed UNC-Greensboro 98-38 while the women were shaded by only 12 points in a fine effort. The Pfeiffer men won 14 of 15 events in their half including two relays, which was a first for a Falcon swimming team. The Pfeiffer women put up a gutty performance winning 9 of the 14 events in which they entered. Julie Spillman won both diving events and set a new pool record in winning the 50 yards freestyle. In December, the men bowed to a powerful Davidson College squad by a score of 77-31. Brightspots for the Falcons were the efforts of Joey Panichello in the 100 yards freestyle and the men’s 400 yds. freestyle relay. The men’s relay team set a new school record in winning the 400 yards freestyle relay in 3’38.1. Falcon Backstroker Beth Bennett met the qualifying time for the AIAW Small College Nationals. Beth holds the school records for the 50 yds. and 100 yds. Backstroke and for the 50 yds. Butterfly. He was second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 50 yds. freestyle. Still later, Pfeiffer defeated J.C. Smith University 60-49 at a 1 meet held at Pfeiffer. The Falcons appeared headed for a playoff spot to determine the fourth position in the conference tournament but a controversial ruling on a tied game ended our chances. Her devotion has taken her far beyond the normal re- quests of her job in the library. Consequently she is loved and respected by students, faculty, and administrators. Her guidance on the campus with her warm smile and genuine sincerity has enriched the life of this college community.” These words spoken by Dr. Sasser could be said of no one other than Mrs. Surratt. Her generosity, often annonymous, has shaped and touched the lives of more persons than we have room to print. For these reasons, we dedicate the 1977 Chimes to one whom we feel is a very real reason many of us may say, “I’d rather be in Misenheimer.” 180 The Wizard Of Oz Dorothie ......Carrolyn Crowell Cowardly Lion.......Steve Boles Strawman . . . V 181 Lookout Dr. Peter Barty has initiated several activities at Pfeiffer College since his arrival at the college in 1974. Among his projects are the organization of the History Club, Phi Alpha Theta, and College History Bowl. LOOK- OUT! You never know what he will 9tart next! Up Front She’s up front and that’s all that counts. Ms. Newman is the secretary for the Deans of Student Affairs and Development. Recently, during the 1977 Awards and Honors Day ceremony, she was cited as the third dean. We think you’ll agree. Ms. Newman has been calming students, soothing them, and mothering for years now from the front desk in the outer office of the Deans. She’s usually very calm, and that seems to set the mood for the most “heart- broken” and “villainous” alike. “Can I help you,” rings out pretty clearly on even the most frustrating occasions, including yours truly, Don Sherrow, whom without her help at times of desperation, might not have made it. Thanks, and stay “UP FRONT.” Front Page This is the year that was, and whether you remember the story or not, we would like to recap it for you. Here it is as printed, in summary form, in the Charlotte Observor: The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating possible embezzlement of Pfeiffer College money by former employes. College officials conducted an investigation of their own, then on April 15 asked Carol Lowder, district attorney for Stanly County, “to look into certain activities of former college employes,” college President Douglas Reid Sasser confirmed Friday. He said the college agreed with Lowder to ask for SBI assistance. The article appeared as a complete shock for most of the college com- munity. Rumors appeared, taking the usual number of “less than believeable” tolls of inaccurate information. Some worried as to whether or not Pfeiffer would be able to withstand the publicity. It is a question that will have to be answered in the coming years. Nevertheless, the crisis that seemed to be upon us brought many of us closer together. People who remembered friendships, and their reasons for being at Pfeiffer in the first place, seemed to recommit themselves to loyalty, and honesty. It was one of the first serious times that many members of the campus asked the question, “Would I rather be in Misenheimer?” Star Tracks Lawrence Ferlinghetti is perhaps the outstanding personality to visit Pfeiffer College this year. An important figure in poetry during the late fifties and early sixties, he is held in highest esteem among the greats of our time, Ginsberg, Keronac, and others. He was a featured speaker in the Henry Pfeiffer Chapel on April 22, and spoke to a capacity audience of faculty, students, and visitors. His style of poetry may be considered a type of poetic jazz in that it is completely, and has its origin in americanism. A kind but somewhat abrasive in- dividual, he enjoys recapturing particular scenes that include shades of regionalism in his work. Upon his arrival to Pfeiffer he was very much impressed and allowed himself to be ushered around campus on more than one occasion during his brief but thorough visit. Commenting on poets and their poetry, Ferlinghetti remarked, “The poet is the Charley Chaplin man, who may or may not catch - her fair eternal form, spreadeagled in the open air of existence.” The quote was lovely, he responded with part of his own A CONEY ISLAND OF THE MIND. The President’s Desk Many documents cross the desk of the President of Pfeiffer College. Few have moved me more deeply than the last will and testament of the late Rev. Thomas E. Plyler, Jr., a minister of the United Methodist Church. Mr. Plyler was ser- ving the nearby New London United Methodist Church at the time of death. In his will, he provides that one-fourth of his estate be given to Pfeiffer College for the purpose of establishing the T.A. and Sarah H. Plyler Scholarship with the income from the funds to be awarded to a person or persons as chosen by the college. In addition, he left his personal library, of some size, to the G.A. Pfeiffer Library. As I am writing this, a check totaling almost $15,000 from his estate is before me. Quickly let me point out that $15,000 is not a large check in these days. It is a large check when one considers that Rev. Plyler entered the ministry late in life in 1961 after a very successful career in the business world including service with Eastern Airlines and Tool Service Company of Monroe. During his days at New London, he was a frequent visitor to the Pfeiffer library, attended theatre productions, and seldom missed a musical performance on the campus. He was deeply impressed by our faculty. He was, however, more deeply impressed by Pfeiffer students. A liberal arts graduate of Davidson College, T.A. Plyler was a man who was at home with books and with the arts. His heart called him to meet a human need. It was at this point that an interesting union occurred. All of you know that dealing with human problems and needs can be a most exhausting undertaking. The spirit can be milked dry and the body drained of its strength. T.A. Plyler knew how to renew himself; it was through the genius of the performing arts and in the magic of good literature. Why am I writing this as a reflection of the year? Because the life of T.A. Plyler suggests to me something of the goals of a liberal arts education. Here was a man who was able to change careers while in his middle years and then successfully engage in a course of study at the Duke Univer- sity Divinity School. He found joy, strength, wisdom and inspiration in the continuing experience of learning as well as in the renewing qualities of the arts, especially music. His reward was serving others. During the 1976-1977 academic year we experienced many common circumstances. We have undergone a national presidential campaign. We have faced the trauma of the energy crisis combined with a severe winter. We have observed the ravages of inflation and the price of high unemployment. Please remember that the late T.A. Plyler in his life experienced comparable circumstances. Yet, his devotion to his library and to the arts kept him moving forward. He was constant in his commitment to the service of his fellow men. Even in the closing months of his life, following the death of his wife, he thought of what he could do to serve others even after his death. Thus, his bequest to Pfeiffer. What of this year at Pfeiffer? If the college has imparted love of learning, a love of books, a measure of ap- preciation for the arts, and a growing understanding of the rewards and importance of serving others, then we have started you down the road to a true liberal education. Please remember also a part of a true liberal education is for each to discover in his own way the art of living beyond one’s self without the aid of a crutch. This is a life-long task — at least, it is for me. Hopefully, we have moved each down the road a bit this year. It has been a group activity — students, faculty, staff, administractors, trustees, parents, alumni, and a host of friends all helping. Pfeiffer does not stand alone, for alone it will fail. I wanted to share with you something about my late friend T.A. Plyler. As some of you read this, you can have the satisfaction of knowing that you had an influence on our late benefactor as he visited on the campus. Your spirit, your life, your manner spoke to him, and he responded. In most cases this was done most silently. In the years ahead know that you have my love and appreciation for being a part of the greater Pfeiffer family in 1976-1977. Live with joy in the spirit of service. Douglas Reid Sasser, President Douglas Reid Sasser, President 189 BIO David Baer, a student from Zurich, Switzerland, is an asset to the Pfeiffer campus. A major in recreation and social work, he has adapted well to the adjustments he has had to make. He keeps a busy schedule consisting of social activities, studies, and recreation and sticks to waht he sets for himself. In his studies, David applies himself and isn’t afraid to ask questions. He is devoted to his studies, as some have put it, and is on the Dean’s List. This isn’t David’s first bout with school, however, he has a Business degree from Switzerland. In the way of recreation, David is one of Pfeiffer’s foremost soccer players. In fact, that’s part of the reason he’s here. But soccer and school aren’t everything. David’s done some traveling, too. He’s traveled Europe, India, and the United States. What does he think of America? He feels that America has space to let him do what he wants to, that there are many opportunities. He also feels that Americans are not ecology minded, that we tend to be wasteful We can’t forget that David is a biking enthusiast, another item he is able to fit into his organized life. When you see him, say “Hello!”; but please don’t forget that he is from Switzerland and not Sweden. Couples What’s it like to be a married student and living on campus? We decided to ask Statha “Sam” Osborne, President of the Senior Class to tell us all about it. “What’s it like to be married living on campus? It stinks!” “No really folks, if I had it to do over again, I’d have married my freshman year. It’s great to come home every afternoon at six pm and have the supper on the table. There aren’t too many men on this campus that will raise a finger to help out, but I have one that will.” Daily routines have come about somewhat subconciously,” Seven thirty I tell Charles to get up, it’s time to go to class. At ten until eight he usually arises. For an eight o’clock breakfast he usually manages to eat and run enroute. By five thirty I’m home for supper, and by six in the evening he’s on his way out to work. Nine thirty and I’m in bed. And, by ten thirty he’s in bed and kisses me good night. That’s out life (chuckle). Our weekends are about the same since I’m in the Concert Choir, and he’s a mechanic in a local shop. One thing that is real nice is that it is much quieter in the married student apartments. My grades have really improved since marrying. Also, for two people the size of Charles and I, the apartment really is too small.” 194 Afterward Now you have experienced Misenheimer. How did you feel the first time you visited? The campus is dark, and the day has come to an end. The Chapel bells are ringing. Can you here them? It’s another lonely night, and there seems to be nothing to do. But have you really seen Misenheimer? With all that you’ve seen and done, the experiences of a lifetime, can you say now, more than ever before, “I’d rather be in Misenheimer?” From orientation to graduation the conflict has continued, join us in saying,” I’d rather be in Misenheimer.” 19' 198 200 a Class Of 1977 Abrams, Donald James, P.O. Winter Park, Fla. 32792 Senior Marshalls Ann McLean Mascovitz Mark Steven Eller Julianne Brittain Patsy Anne Tucker The year 1976-1977 has not been an easy one for most Americans. The winter was without a doubt one of the coldest in recent history. Adding to weather con- ditions were scarce supplies of natural gas, and other heating utilities. Many poor Americans, along with the elderly were freezing in their homes from lack of heating fuel. In November, Americans had the opportunity to go to the election polls once again. The two contenders for President of the United States were the incum- bent, Gerald Ford, republican; and Jimmy Carter, a former governor of Georgia, and a democrat. Mr. Carter became the President of the United States, and America said good-bye to an old and honest leader, Gerald Ford. Unemployment rocked the nation at a disastrous 11 plus percent. Americans who had jobs were not willing to look for something better for fear of losing what they had. Older Americans who had considered early retirement quickly changed their minds because of drastic increases in prices. It was a year of scandal in government as well as big business. Notable cor- porations involved were Lockheed, ITT, the Korean government making payoffs to U.S. Congressmen, and Senators whose sexual standards came to the forefront of the American society. The year had a positive side among all these problems. Sugar prices which had risen the year before dropped as a result of an effective boycott, giving rise to a coffee price doubling during the following year. Building and construction started to increase after a few years of economic slump. Gasoline prices reached their peak and stabilized at 50o (or slightly more) in most parts of the country. And, Indira Gandi faced an overwhelming defeat in her bid for India’s Prime Ministership. Amidst the bleak picture painted world wide, the village of Misenheimer lay sleepily, rather much unaware of the world around her. Pressing issues involved drinking alcoholic beverages on campus, seeking entertainment on weekends, and for many, planning how to make the grade, “without really trying.” And most of these were solved pretty quickly. John’s Tavern of youth flowed freely, and that became the answer to most of the problems encountered by many. As for those of us who remained on the staff, I would like to thank my roommate Zell for not only putting up with my frustrations in the office but in the dorm as well ... it took guts. Thanks to ‘my advisor’ Dr. Campbell. To Cat Jones, Doug Terry, and Vince Lacey, I do not think it could have happened without you (but I’m not willing to try again to find out)! And to Jeff Balfrey, Wes Bobbitt, and Lee Brown (three head photographers in one year - gads) thanks. However, I would like to thank Richard Lodge and Joe Barrow for great work without pay. The book shows your work well. Thanks to Wayne Wolfe for keeping it together. Most of all, I would like to thank Dean (Mean Dean) Jones for support in the last year at Pfeiffer College in helping one young man become less “negative.” You have helped to turn my life around. And, last but not least, a thank you to Mrs. Elmina Surratt who like the Senior Class of ’77 knows truly what it means to say, “I’d rather be in Misenheimer.” The 1977 Chimes is published by Herb Eaton, Inc.
