The Falcon Soccer Team showed great promise for the season in pre-season scrimmages with Charlotte's semi-pro soccer clubs. As the year progressed, the inexperience of Pfeiffer's young team became apparent. Throughout the season the team was plagued with injuries. Only strong wills and heads up play allowed this year's soccer team to reach the tally they did. A record of 3-8-1 - is no indication of the fine ball playing and close games produced by this team. The Falcon's conference record of 3-0-1 placed them in tie position for the top seating in the newly formed Carolinas Conference, and the third place slot in the District League. jPj C4s3 ? The Falcdns started hot then cooled after demoralizing, last minute losses to Catawba and Guilford. Then came the real cruncher; the stunning news that Head Coach Tom Childress would be leaving at the end of the year. So tri-captains Walt Frye, Tom Roseman, and David Lee try to lead a two-front war: fighting Carolinas Conference op- position on one flank, the loss of their coach on the other. Juniors Rex Mitchell, Dennis Causey, Ray Dancy along with transfer Mike Evans are wondering about their last year in basketball as soph guards Greg Gil- more and John Potts break-in freshmen Chip Pepper and Matt Han- felder. We pick up a big man to replace Frye, win the battle to keep the coach, and look out for this club next year. r Pfeiffer 67 1 :? 67 74 73 78 63 64 57 67 67 81 69 76 64 70 The '72-73 completed. 78 57 85 71 81 66 74 55 83 98 103 78 67 71 64 season Marshill Elon Guilford Belmont Abbey Guilford Catawba Elon UNC Wilmington Elon Lenoir Rhyne Belmont Abbey High Point Pembroke Catawba UNC Wilmington is yet to ■Stiff 179 180 182 J.W. However, for the Lady Falcons this year, 1972-73, proved to be a year of dawning. Girls7 Basketball was established, with strong support from the AWS, on a club level basis. It is hoped that this year will mark the begin- ning of girls7 intercollegiate competition on the varsity level. Coached by J.W. Lisk and Pete Leonard, the girls7 giving of their time and energy were Kathy DeVore, Brenda Bar- ringer, Regina Furr, Kim Hamrick, Janet Sharp, Kathy Kennedy, June Oldman, Marie Hudson, Teresa Wright, and Karen Shim- pock. Early in the season the Lady Falcons split with the Catawba Squaws winning at home and losing on the road. Other scores from games played were not available at press time. , ' (' 185 .V v' '' ' 'Ii - . 4 r ' 186 (' 187 I I 189 smmm mm mmg %W4i m rMkIft - Wmfl |A wmj $ S®® MMmmm Mk kw $M0I0 tIeBi 190 1st Row L to R Bill Avis, Bob Martin, Gary Bartlett, Coach Ferebee, Larry Fast, Kevin McNeely, Tommy Raines, Jack Carlson. 2nd Row L to R: Glenn Phillips, Kemp Harvey, Dickie Myers, Tommy Little, Toogie Smith, Lawrence Greene, David Gray, Sean Veach. 3rd Row L to R: Bill Cash, Ray Dancy, John Thompkins, Pete Leonard, Walt Frye, Paul Nye, Randy Benson, Rick Young. Pfeiffer had another fine season in 1972 with an overall record of 23 wins and 10 losses. Key men lost off this strong team include All America pitcher Randy Benson, All State third baseman Rick Young, second baseman Gary Bartlett and left fielder Kemp Harvey. Coach Joseph Ferebee begins his seventeenth year at Pfeiffer with a record of 346 wins and only 128 losses. Lettermen Toogie Smith, Dickie Myers, Glenn Phillips, Bill Cash, Larry Fast, Paul Nye, Tommy Raines, Walt Frye, Jack Carlson, Bobby Martin, Lawrence Greene, and Tommy Little give the Falcons a nucleus for a good ball club. Newcomers Earl Coggins, Bill Warren, Don Frye, Alton Caldwell, and Claude Bernhardt add depth to the team. Thirty two Pfeiffer players have signed professional contracts in the past sixteen years with three of these men reaching the Major Leagues: Billy Wynne (Chicago White Sox), Monty Montgomery (Kansas City Royals) and Barry Moore (Washington Senators). 7 2 2 2 1972 Scoreboard Opponent 1 N.C. WRESTLING Pfeiffer College's wrestling team struggled through another season competing against excellent colleges both in and out of the dis- trict 26 league. Unfortunately, Pfeiffer only sponsored five men for more than half of the matches this year. Though there were only five, the interest and desire to perform and compete never decreased. With the District 26 Tournament coming up shortly, practices have increased in intensity due to the request of the Pfeiffer mat men who want to place No. 1 in their weight classes. Each individual is going out and talking to as many schools as possible to see if the wrestling program at Pfeiffer can get back to its original track, i.e. undefeated in the conference and sweeping ail the tournaments. Pfeiffer College in recent years has had outstanding tennis teams and under the direction of Coach Darrell Page this year's team should be no dif- ferent. As of yet there doesn't seem to be any new blood hitting the ranks. With almost an entire team of let- termen returning, this year's squad looks very promising. Pfeiffer vs Akron University N.C.
