Tearing down the established is not constructing change. Effective change evolves in modification. In considering change, who are the affecters, who are the effected? How many are the affecters, how many are the effected? Yet, the need for change is ever present. When will the change commence? What are the means? Wnere are the direc- tions? Must one be a longhair in order to be a proponent for change? Youth cry for revolution while the adult plea for restitution. The chasm widens. Look around. Look at the world our parents helped us to build. Look, look. Now, what kind of world will we help our children shape? We weep for you sweet children. Shall we heap more trash-or, shall we clear the blemished land? The demand is “do it now”. But may we ask “how?” How can any- thing be done effectively without co- operation? In San Francisco Mrs. H.R. Meadows tells her son Jeffrey that he cannot play outside this morning because of the smog count. Across the country children die of emphysema, a man-made respiratory disease. Stop the world, I want to get off! Will “change” continue to be a politician’s campaign platform, and will “change” continue to be a dinner topic of conversation? And you ask me if I am being pessimistic. Well, I am being realistic. If pessimism is re- alistic, then, optimism is idealistic. SEVEN
