Pfeiffer College is its own definition, effected only in part by the world beyond pastoral Misenheimer. The community is a composite of the characters and elements which are here. The ecology of Pfeiffer is unique. 2 6 ■ An attitude of change was apparent but the balance of the Pfeiffer experience was constant. There remained the constant community, the faculty-student interaction, the academic grind, the weekend exodus, the organized, the unorganized, and the disorganized life of students. Pfeiffer College through this first year of a four-year shift of emphasis retained most of its long-standing tradition. 8 9 Pfeiffer 69 was an experience of change. Students experienced the agony of the old and new junxtaposed, tradition and innovation preseni in the appearance of conflict. The college was exposed to modulation of the academic programs. Many upperclassmen avoided the confrontation, some freshmen expected more than they found, and numerous professors struggled to make their old habits fit the new pattern. 10 PHIL MANLY, Freshman. So- cially, it's one of the best things that happened to Pfeiffer. Girls7 rules changed. It gave us the op- portunity to become responsible adults, for once. ... an exciting, challenging, and rewarding academic and campus life experience . . . Today's demands require re- thinking of the conventional educational patterns. Pfeiffer's AIM Program centers around an approach which emphasizes such positive features as: 1. Let Students Set Their Own Pace. 2. Offer A New Measuring System. 3. Encourage Independent Creative Thinking. 4. Guard Against Narrow- ness. 5. Encourage growth In Cul- tural Awareness. 6. In the fall of 1968, Pfeiffer College instituted Phase One of its new academic plan . . . Phase II will begin with the 1969-70 academic year . . . The expanded AIM program will provide a choice. When the traditionals surrender their didactic formulas for the in- centive and motivation . . . perhaps the system will survive as the ideal presents itself . . . The AIM pro- gram has so proven itself to me to be an academic anachronism. 12 A. B. WEAVER, Senior, Under AIM. I changed to AIM because my grades were consistently above average, which actually gained time toward eventually getting out . . . It offered, as originally stated, an opportunity to be part of some- thing new — we all want that. It was well formulated, now it's not being fulfilled. AIM, theologically, is apocalyptic in nature ' From the very beginning, I have hoped that AIM would succeed purely for the future worth of my degree. SKI HILENSKI, Senior Theoretically, AIM was to be the individualist's 'bag'; a system of learning where the person was the goal, and not merely the convey- ance of knowledge ... If anybody was going to be placed into a niche, at least it would be a niche of his own design and building . . . Everything was designed for the 'highly motivated' student. JUDY HAWKS, Fresh man. The basic idea is good but it just hasn't worked yet. I think it eventually will. Like the grading system, letter grades in a sense are still here. Pro- fessors still say A or B when you ask what the unit grades mean. It's like that in the whole program. 13 The mechanics of the new academic program remained widely unstable, unknown, misunderstood but constantly questioned. Students and faculty seemed to expect, somewhat naively, that Camelot would appear in a spot on Route 52. The ideal of AIM fell short of inflated expectations of many people on campus. But the program of academic, incentive, and motivation was initiated. A bold step was taken to gear liberal education to the expectations of an increasingly specialized world. Pfeiffer attempted a program as individual as student participation and imagination would permit. The approach necessitated time, much more than a single year, to mature. 14 16 18 pfeiffb; COLLEGE 19 20 21 22 The campus experienced a broadened social life. Orientation, concert series, entertainers movies, dances, and STOA were the basis of on-campus social life. But Kepley's Tavern, bowling in Albemarle, the Purple Penguin, and movies in Charlotte also vented the social desire. All were a part of the spirit and spirts of Pfeiffer. 23 26 28 29 31 33 36 WT V. 37 Ail persons are herebv forbidden to hunt on these lands or to trespass in any way upon them. Ihe full penalty of the law will be invok- ed against any and all who violate this order. ft; Day ot 19 ' W ■ .-.v, •. 38 The end was a beginning for many. The fifteen year regime of Dr. J. Lem Stokes ended abruptly with an unexpected early departure soon after first semester started. Students began to evaluate the college and vocalize their opinions. Cautiously at first, and then more insistently, students pressed for changes in extracurricular, social and academic spheres. 1969 was not a power grab, however. It was a sincere desire to increase both the worth of the institution and the worth of each individual on campus. With added responsibility, students became more sophisticated. Student run activities became more specialized to provide for the total community. SNEA's tutorial system benefited the small community of Richfield, SGA efforts were finally those of governing, CUB broadened entertainment, communications attempted more professional methods. Long overdue, 1968-69 was the year of the students, and they took advantage of the situation. Team captain Bob Parry was joined by Doug Trice, Harry Dutton, and Tom Nicholson to provide the Birds with constant scoring threat. Dave Cowles, Pete Norton, and Jeff Enfield led the rugged defensive unit with the stellar help of Benny Clodfelter in the nets. Although they were not able to win every game, the Falcons certainly excited the many fans who came out to the games. The team captured the Area 7 title and went to the national tour- nament in St. Joseph, Mo. At the end of the season, the Falcons ranked second among the nation's small colleges with a conference record of 21 wins and 2 losses and an overall record of 38 wins and 8 losses. Coached by Francis Essie, the Falcons were never far behind in a match and proved to be one of the finest teams in the conference. After o year without the sport, Dave Argo, captain, led the team. With the new talent gaining experi- ence, next year looks promising.
