Rebecca Bush...................Editor James Powers .... Business Manager CHIMES Volume thirteen Nineteen hundred and sixty-eight Pfeiffer College • Misenheimer, N. C. 1 Dedication .. . Two We are glad he chose Pfeiffer College — it makes us glad we did. In the classroom, he makes literature come alive and gram- mar interesting. In the commun- ity, he concerns himself with the local public schools, the church, and the Civitan Club. On a com- mittee, whether it be campaign fund raising or library, he con- tributes his best toward the bet- terment of Pfeiffer. As chairman of the Division of Language and Literature, he has been instru- mental in the development of the new AIM program. Because of his concern for Pfeiffer College and his unceas- ing devotion to the ideals of higher education and because amidst it all he never forgets the student, we proudly dedicate to Dr. J. Griffin Campbell the 1968 CHIMES. Compact and reserved in isola- tion, yet expanding in a still tra- ditional style, enlarging in a con- crete way to contain the vital re- sources to universal knowledge. — Th is is the Pfeiffer campus. Eight Nine The pace set . . . an unaware- ness looming . . . the invaders proceed to rendezvous . . . mis- sion unknown . . . destination ob- scure. A road sign directs . . . autos, transverse, one mode of invasion. Arrival . . . relaxed ex- haustion . . . the caravans divide . . . blocked lines guide . . . rest- ing places for boiling mechan- isms. Settled . . . forgetful . . . wrong zone . . . ticket time. Two standard pieces of equipment. . . legs, surely help. The modes of transportation are servants to man. Now, mingling time has come. Ten Eleven Twelve Commencement ... an awak- ening to venture further as Alice in Wonderland . . . anxiefied fear. . . y tis a puzzlement ' now a convergence. The time has en- tered front stage and a hectic, frenzied air encompasses the whole. A frustling anticipation collides with vibrating ulcers. A recurring series of introductions, new faces with unmatchable names . . . situating and unload- ing . . . forms to address with last name, first name, middle initial . . . and a myriad of activities emerge. Adjustments are in the limelight. Thirteen Thinking ... a remaining frontier of inexpressable com- plexity that can never be clois- tered. The mind is its own place . . . expoundable ... re- served . . . slowly nurtured . . . spontaneous ... a contradictory phenomenon. Approaching a hazy horizon of learning, man delves into the crackles of his mind. He desires scope; he aims. Fostered in tangible envir- onments and in numerous unde- finable realms, learning is a deepening of man's entire soul . . . expounding potentialities to serve . . . seeking true identity . . . emerging from thoughts and responses. Fourteen Fifteen Sixteen Seventeen A part of every person . . . Our Town . . . the cherished dwelling that holds the past in dusk and the future in sunrise. A heritage ... a portrayal . . . peo- ple assuming roles. The stage en- lightened . . . animated . . . delv- ing perceptively and challeng- ing. People, the actors provoking people, the on-lookers . . . void of assistance in props. Amateurs, compensating with a love to per- form ... a presentation unmask- ing all. The image in the mirror becomes clear. Eighteen Nineteen Through sensitivity common bonds come into being ... a ka- leidoscope of interaction hap- pens. Involvement causes an air of dialogue coupled with times of speechless communication. Endeavoring to be members one of another students become united. Twenty Twenty-two Twenty-four Happenings emerging into a vibrant heritage . . . residents and alumni forming components . . . frivolity appearing in varied dis- guises . . . costumes and decora- tive side shows climaxing with judgings. The gaiety of partici- pation meandering along the Curly Tail by-way . . . soccer in vogue . . . halftime colored with formalities for a chosen royalty. The second half ending with Pfeiffer defeated . . . Emmett Kelly faces are worn. But all this found on a rainy autumn day still leaves one with a pocket full of memories. Twenty-five Responding . . . adapting . . . interacting ... an earnest sensi- tivity required. Rejections and elations emerge accomplished by contributing jointly with an in- tertwining of life styles and per- sonality traits. The over-under enigma is overcome by faculty and students approaching a com- mon oneness. Twenty-six Twenty-seven Twenty-eight Twenty-nine Thirty -'|8 ) i ' Beyond the fringe ... a loner pauses, peace is drawing inwardly ... a time for muddled thoughts to be collected in quiet meditation. Individuals sepa- rated from the mass . . . con- templating, then activating . . . achieving personal dignity. The individual . . . despondent . . . overjoyed . . . apathetic . . . de- termined, with the entities burst- ing forth. Thirty-one Thirty-two AdmmistRAtion Thirty-two Bulwarks . . . speculating, preparing, serving, establishing an air conducive for growth. A fellowship of interlocking contributions, forming the basis for student expanse. That you should think, we come not to offend, But with good will. To show our simple skill. That is the true beginning of our end. Consider then we come but in despite. We do not come as minding to content you, Our true intent is. All for your delight We are not here. That you should here repent you. The actors are at hand and by their show You shall know all that you are like to know, A Midsummer-Night's Dream Act Y: Scene I I I • Winston-Salem HUNTER PUBLISHING • North Carolina COMPANY ED GOLDSTON, SILER CITY, N.
