The most vital ingredients in a human being are the substances which can not be extracted, measured, or examined. Anne Black . . . Editor Wayne Dick . . . Business Manager THE CHIMES Pfeiffer College Misenheimer, North Carolina V Dedication 2 Those who have been associated with Pfeiffer College for any length of time fully realize the contributions made bv the person to whom we dedicate the 1967 Chimes. This individual has seen Pfeiffer grow and has been instrumental in its growth. No other person has given so freelv of both her time and energy to transform the dreams of Pfeiffer into real- ities. Being a woman of tremendous faith and courage she has faced many trying situations and has succeeded in overcom- ing them with grace and poise. For her devotion to Pfeiffer, we proudly dedicate the 1967 Chimes to Miss Marv E. Social Life at Pfeiffer 7 i I Emphasis on Personality in Daily Campus Life “Society affects to estimate men by their talents, but really feels and knows them bv their character.” Thoreau Character is developed through striving to perfect those things that make each of us an individual. Through living with others, one’s character is modified and expanded. 9 V- 10 “To every thing there is a season . . Ecclesiastes 3:1a There is a time when anticipation and uneasiness grasps all of us. The air of expectancy hovers as roommates meet, acquaintances form, and friend- ships begin. The warmth of these friend- ships is realized onlv in the finality of the season. Friendships Through Activities “Beautiful and rich is an old Friendship. Grateful to the touch as ancient ivory.” Eunice Tietjens The ancient ivory of old friendships cul- minates in beauty through renewal. Some Highlights of Homecoming 13 I Aspects of Religious Environment . . no man is an island complete unto himself . . Meditation 17, John Donne Through worship, man realizes the im- portance and strength of fellowship. It is this common bond of fellowship that helps strengthen man's beliefs as it provides a framework for man’s responses to life. Man is governed bv principles which he has helped to make. Onlv when man perceives himself in relation to all of humanity, can his purpose in life be fully realized. 15 V I i } “How far that little candle throws his beams ... So shines a good deed . . Merchant of Venice V, i, 83 A towering chapel spire and the peal of chimes convey a feeling of peace and tranquility, as well as serving as a con- stant reminder of man’s inner needs. Here man can find solace and inspira- tion. 16 17 1 Mental Development Through Studying “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom and with all thy getting get understanding.” Proverbs 4:7 The search for wisdom is the motivat- ing force which draws each individual into the complex of college life. This search is carried out in study, the correla- tion of knowledge in various fields, and in relationships with fellow students. In gaining wisdom we spontaneously comprehend and question those things near 11s. 18 V Excellence in Scholarship “No profit grows where is no pleasure ta'en; In brief, sir, study what you most affect. Taming of the Shrew I, i, 39 We, as individuals, must have some means of self expression and the chance to pursue that which most appeals to us. Unity Through Physical Activity k1 I ■ V ■ . every athlete exercises self-control in all things.” 1 Corinthians 9:24b Physical activity in the form of athlet- ics produces a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction to the participant regardless of the motives for playing. For some, enjoyment in itself suffices, while for others, recognition is the goal. ' . £T$? ■ . u 24 Striving Through Competition . . in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize.” 1 Corinthians 9:24a A competitive spirit brings out those qualities that distinguish all men from each other. 25 26 Extinguish the ravaging; O O O fires of inspiration and terminate the strife of mind. By this von will attain peace and quiet but, never will you knowledge find. 27 I I m ssistant Professor llen Fine explains accounting princi- ples to some of his business majors. “If 1 have more debts than assets puzzles Don W eaver over an accounting problem. Professor James L. Williams. Division Chairman who is generally referred to as “Colonel In his students, is alwavs willing to advise them during difficult times. “Oops! . I've made another error, and I have a class in ten minutes, mumbles Barry Pote. Economics and Business Administration Many extra hours are spent in class by accounting students laboring over the same problems thev thought thev had completed the night before. Accounting is not only a difficult subject but also a time consuming one that must be mastered by business majors. “Now, let’s consider that average grade of -10 and onlv the final exam to go, befuddles Coach Martin. The Division of Economics and Business Administration is set up to train future executives and accountants and to supply the background for future graduate work. Emphasis is placed upon the student’s development of an understand- ing of the fundamental principles govern- ing business management and of the basic patterns of economic thought. Three ma- jor courses of study— economics, business administration, and accounting—are offered in this division. 29 I Education Dr Lloyd G. Louder. Division Chairman and long-time member of the Pfeiffer faculty, demonstrates Ins mathematical wizardry on an ancient abacus. Elementarv education majors find Dr. Lowder’s humor and method of teaching both amusing and stimulating. Judv Banck illustrates phonetics to the class. knowledge of phonetics is essential for elementarv education majors. ■'Twit' Greer demonstrates the use of an auto- harp in her music education class. Sally Jackson emphasizes a point concerning rhythm to a classmate who diligently attempts to follow the beat. Prospective teachers are adequately prepared to teach on either the elemen- tary or secondary school level through the courses offered by the Division of Educa- tion. Besides taking courses in preparation for the National Teachers Examinations, the students observe and teach for a period of time in an elementary or secon- dary school in the area immediately sur- rounding the Pfeiffer campus. Projects are an integral part of the education curriculum. Mrs. Gore looks at a project presented bv Kim Covert and Dianne Hatley. Hilda Yates wonders if this could be Pfeiffer s newest attempt at computerization. 31 ) Fine Arts Dr. Richard II Brewer, Division Chairman, conducts class in choral procedures. 32 Billv Cotton studies an abstract art creation on exhibit. Student choirs give inspiration and enjoyment to the college community throughout the entire school year. Participa- tion is characterized bv interest and enthusiasm. Dottie Kennard and David Zimmerman have starring roles in Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mama’s Hung You in the Closet and I’m Feeling So Sad. The Division of Fine Arts offers a series of courses in music, art. humanities, speech, and drama. The Department of Music offers a music major with emphasis on either church music or music education. The Speech Department offers an English-drama major in conjunction with die English Department. Applying make-up is one of the most tedious tasks in preparing for a drama production. Professor James Havmaker explains to N anette Starnes the importance of color and contrast in attempting to create a mood tor the observer. 33 German is made interesting by an attractive Fulbright Scholar, Miss Schmidt. Dr Paul A mash is amused somewhat with a Spanish student’s translation of Don Quixote l v Cervantes. Concentration is a prime factor in learning any foreign language. Language review classes are often conducted by advanced students. Jane Allen holds such a class for French students. 34 Language and Literature Ad. 12 is the familiar haunt of Dr. Griffin Campbell, Chairman of the Division of Language and Literature. This relaxed position is characteristic of his teaching technique, but is not characteristic of a student’s position in his first encounter with Dr. Campbell. English 101 student receives personal attention from As- sistant Professor William van Hettinga. English as a language and in various tvpes of literature occupies one of the largest positions in the Pfeiffer curric- ulum. The English Department and the Department of Foreign Languages, which includes French, Spanish, and German, are combined to form the Division of Languages and Literature. Majors are offered in both French and German as well as in English. 35 Natural Sciences Dissection of the frog is one of the essential aspects of anv zoology student’s lab activities. Learning the parts of the frog is another matter. Dr. Robert Crowl uses modem equipment to conduct an experiment with bacterial cultures. Accuracy is imperative in experiments consisting of elements in minute quantities. Errors could be disastrous. The botanv greenhouse offers an opportunity for students to explore and investigate plant life cycles and growth. i Dr. J. O. Manlv, Chairman of the Division of Natural Sciences, typically lights his pipe as students prepare to take a lab practical. He makes his subject rough, but he is always ready to assist. The Division of Natural Sciences offers majors in chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics. Pre- medical and pre-dental students are given sound undergraduate back- grounds through the resources of this division. Basic studies in the sciences which are integral in the role of the elementary teacher are also offered. The Science Department is well- equipped to meet the needs of all the students. Where was I when he taught us how to focus this thing!” Careful examination reveals the related parts. 37 I' ' retrain Christian education majors report after working in local churches in the surrounding community. 38 Religion and Philosophy One does not usually study in a chapel pew, but W esley Judy, a pre-ministerial student, finds it a quiet place to study for an examination. The Division of Religion and Philos- ophy offers a sound background in the teachings of the Bible to all students. Students who have chosen Christian education or the ministry as their voca- tional preference find that the courses offered by this division are more than adequate in fulfilling their every need. 39 Miss Flovd uses geographical references to emphasize a point in her New Testament class. Steve Cripliver does not seem to find social psychology verv stimulating for late night studv. Dick Funderburke looks in disgust at his latest exam grade. Being Mr. Fralev’s assistant does not help his political science average. Hxperimenting with a seminar class, Mr. Lohmann discusses tihe reign of the Tudors. He finds that the informal atmosphere creates more interest and discussion among students in his history of England class. 40 I Social Sciences Dr. William Cotton, Chairman of the Division of Social Sciences, tends to one of his administrative duties. The Division of the Social Sciences encompasses the Departments of History, Sociology, Geography, Psychology, and Political Science. Students who have chosen one of these areas as their major field of study may be qualified to teach social studies, to enter law school, or to work in a guidance program. Eddie Kelly discovers that empty classrooms provide an ideal place for study. 41 Few mortals strive to be the best in every endeavor in every test. C. 27203 227 Editor s Comments A college yearbook is a unique publication—a book that contains both pictures and ideas. The pictures often fade but the ideas remain. It is a collector's item and since it cannot be bought after its year of publication it gains value through the years. A yearbook is a permanent record of time which each Pfeiffer student has recorded for him in the Chimes. I feel especially proud to have been editor of the 1967 Chimes. It has been a most rewarding experience for me, but as I look back over the past year I wonder how it would have been accomplished had it not been for all those people who gave their time, effort and dedication to the publishing of the book. Miss Nancy Henderson—who gave me advice when it was needed, as it so often was. Frankie Cole—who was mv stabilizing force that pulled me through those rough times when I felt we would never meet the deadline. Larry Halsey—for his long hours spent on drawing great and different layouts and for his word of encouragement in our lowest moments. Wavne Dick—who constantly reminded me of our finan- Chris Sturgis—who even through sickness was able to give us a good coverage of sports. Dick Funderburke—who steadily and effeciently put to- gether the publication section. Sarah Goodson—who, with the aid of her staff, did a tre- mendous job on classes. Harriet Matthews—who worried more about the admin- istration section than I did about the entire book. Janet Chance and Bettv Keller—for typing copy and for waiting patiently for more copy to type. Barbara Trusler—for taking charge of subscriptions for the Chimes. cial situation and therefore kept us out of the red. (We hope.) Jerry Thrift—for his excellent job in advertizing. Becky Bush—who took complete charge of the features section and did a tremendous job with it. Ellen Flake, Jan Hatley, and Elliot Abbot—who spent many long and late hours writing copy. Jim Schafer—who through his poetry helped in creating the theme for the book. Johnny Bryan—for his many hours spent in checking and rechecking names in the organization section. Tommy Sparks—who took so many pictures for us. Mr. Bill Reasonover—who gave me not only personal ad- vice but also many excellent pictures that are found in the book. Judy Gauntly—for her clerical assistance on corre- spondence. Karen Cash—my roommate, who patiently listened to my problems and worries concerning the book during the year. Mv very deepest appreciation also goes to Mr. Bob An- derson, our publishing representative and Smith Studios, Mr. J. M. Churchill and Mr. Charles Coggins, our profes- sional photographers, who gave us invaluable assistance. I hope that each of vou found the 1967 Chimes to be a unique publication and that the experiences that it relives are as interesting and as enjoyable for you as editing the yearbook has been for me.
