These are the outward signs of the passage of time—the length- ened shadows on the face of the dial, the darkening streaks down the sides of a building, the ticking of a clock, the running of sand in an hourglass. Time is not only the measure of life, but also its medium. Together this measure and medium give mean- ing to the individual in direct proportion to the way in which they are used—in involvement with people and work, with thoughts and feeling. We, the students of Pfeiffer College, spend our years here finding ourselves in others, becoming aware of the timelessness in ourselves, learning the truth in Edward Young's challenge, Time wasted is existence; used is life, and seeking to answer the query of an old sundial inscription, Now, or when? 2 friends and enjoyment 3 ------ for relaxation and laughter I 4' 4 1 for entertainment, enrichment . Since Time for its duration depends on the rate of thought and feeling, we look to the arts to enhance Time's value. In viewing an art exhibit; in watching Franz Reynders, the Iberian Dance Theatre, or The Brig; in listening to a concert we find a more meaning- ful membership in the community of experience. 6 7 I k) discovery and appreciation of a new approach in music, drama, or art. . . 8 9 special times for outstanding people and events 11 12 13 Chief Warrant Officer Joseph Murate — Bandmaster of Fort Bragg Army Band time for questioning, insight, and renewal. . . 15 16 1 7 18 We leave Pfeiffer for a weekend, for a holiday, or we leave because we graduate; but we take with us the people, events, insights, and memories that have become a part of us. Past time becomes a fusion of experiences that have changed us and prepared us for a greater depth of exchange with our worlds. Just as entrance to Pfeiffer is a preface to growth and learning, so leaving also becomes a prologue rather than a finality Again, and always, comes this question, Where do I find myself and my meaning projected against Time? Perhaps there is no final solution, but there is help from the wisdom of such people as Boris Pasternak who wrote in Doctor Zhivago, What is it about you that you have always known as yourself? .... You in others—this is your soul. This is what you are. This is what your con- sciousness has breathed and lived on and enjoyed throughout your life—your soul, your immortality, your life in others. And what now? You have always been in others and you will remain in others. And what does it matter to you if later on that is called your memory? This will be you—the you that enters the future and be- comes a part of it. Dr. Schreyer as professor, committee member, author, counselor, minister, and individual. Dialogue is an important theological concept. Its many connotations include the idea of meaning- ful interchange with one's Creator as well as one's human brothers. For Dr. George M. Schreyer, dialogue is the way to a vital, searching, honest Christianity. A recognized author, he received degrees from Wofford College, Duke University, and Boston University. Dr. Schreyer is married and has a teen-age daughter, Joy. He does not allow himself or his students to be satisfied with half-answers. For this dialogue of concern and inspiration we dedicate the 1966 Ch imes to Dr. George M. Schreyer, Chairman of the Division of Religion and Philosophy. 22 23 ADMINISTRATION Responsibility for the physical expansion, de- velopment of higher scholastic standards, and the creation of a good name for an academic institution rests heavily upon its president Since coming to Pfeiffer College in July, 1953, Dr. J. Lem Stokes, II, has evidenced a firm belief in the liberal arts background and has worked to strengthen and perpetuate the ideals for which the college stands. An ordained Methodist minister and a man of culture and educa- tion, Dr. Stokes commands respect and admiration for his dedication to his tasks as President of Pfeiffer College. 24 The administration of Pfeiffer College is a group of dis- tinguished men and women who plan the curriculum of the college and supervise the intellectual growth of each student. The two characteristics which all share are cooperation and dedication They are always willing to sacrifice their time to help individual students with their personal and academic problems. In conjunction with the faculty, the administration aids the student in plan- ning the liberal arts curriculum he desires to pursue and guides the student in confronting the challenge which became his when he entered college. Many times the students themselves do not realize how many aspects of their daily college lives are results of decisions by administrative officers, on whom falls the task of coordinating the workings of Pfeiffer with the demands of the outside world The administration's con- cerns are vast; its duties, numberless; and its positions, complex. 25 I Administration guides Administrative leadership is as vital to a college as it is to a corporation or country. Unless its guiding officials are an out- standing combination of knowledge, organizational ability, dedi- cation, and practical experience, the college itself has little chance of becoming outstanding. For this reason, the administra- tion's task is not easy. Joseph S. Ferebee Director of Athletics Mary E. Bethea Dean of Women Sterling D. Huie Librarian Division of Education teaches students to guide others Teacher preparation at Pfeiffer is a concern of the entire faculty, which, with the Division of Education, acting as coordinator, has accepted the challenge that this preparation must pro- duce dedicated and well-trained teachers. Teach- er education is designed to develop professionally competent persons who are academically pre- pared and who understand the responsibilities and procedures of effective teaching. Pfeiffer, certified by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction as a teacher-training college, offers a major in Elementary Education and a program in Secondary Education. Each of the majors places strong emphasis upon development within the student of an understanding of basic patterns of economic thought and of the fundamental principles govern- ing business management and pro- cedures. An Accounting major equips the stu- dent with specialization in the area of design, installation, maintenance, and presentation of financial records. Stu- dy in Business Administration is de- signed to give the student the neces- sary background for understanding and dealing with the problems which confront the executive in the various aspects of business. A theme must be decided upon, sittings for photographs must be arranged, copy must be written, and lay-outs for the different sections must be planned. The sense of achievement comes, however, when the dummy is completed and the dead- line is met. Being a Chimes staft member requires imagination, ingenuity, creativity. The advertising, man- aging, typing, photographic, sports, classes, and literary staffs all work together to complete the job. Elaine Huneycutt, Editor-in-Chief Roy Cottle, Business Manager Anne Black, Assistant Editor, goes over layout with Miss Nancy Henderson, spon- sor, and Dale Patterson, photographer Bettie Keller, Managing Editor, watches as Janet Chance types final copy. 54 Roy Cottle, Business Manager, Chris Sturgis and Barry Pote, Advertising Manager, check advertisements. 1 Betty Jean Way, Jackie Wetherington, Organization Editor, Eleanor Garcia, and John Bryan select candids for various oraanizations. In return, helping send the News to press each week gives the staff members much pleasure in sharing in a crea- tive process, in working with people of similar interests, and in putting into practice the American ideal of free expression. This year the Pfeiffer News had adept leadership in Karen Cash, its editor-in-chief. Editorial emphasis was journalistic integrity in an honest reflecton of views concerning Pfeiffer. General staff re- porters, sports writers, advertising and business managers, and typists all contributed in furnishing the campus with up-to-date news and views. Returning players, Sherrill and Smith, with Courtney and freshman Butch Walker, led all scoring. Trouble began as injuries and scholastic diffi- culties plagued team success. Inex- perience prevailed as freshmen were called on as an added scoring punch. The season advanced as Coach Francis Essie and 64- 65 star, Johnny Miller, saw the team combine speed, ability, and determination Falcon fans saw better basketball and the prospect for future seasons of success as the sea- son progressed. The Falcons had three straight championships: 1962, 1963, and 1964. The team was plagued with iniuries, four regu- lars being out most of the season. Even with a team batting average of only .185, the Falcons finished on top of the Carolinas Conference with an 11-6 record, mainly due to the fine pitching of Billy Wynne and Joe Barnes. Good defensive play helped the team play winning ball. Billy Wynne (N. Y. Mets) and Joe Barnes (Cin- cinnati Reds) will be missed greatly. Other regulars lost are Bob Schuck, Dean Padgett, and Bill McKinley. Returnees from the 1965 squad are Herman Eaker, Art Small, Hal Harrigan, Mike Hogan, Jack Cooke, Monty Montgomery, Bob Gulledge, Bob Boyd, David Sherrill, Neil Shouse and Ron Jones. New men expected to help the team are Vic Worry, Tommy Grubb, Griggie Porter, Dave Pettit, and Steve Pinkston. With broadened horizons, however, the seniors become more alike in their aspiration and determination to do something and to be someone worthwhile. With Senior status come many new responsibilities Among them was the assumption of leadership in the Student Government Association and in many of the other important organizations on campus. Realizing that there were no other students to look up to gave the sen- iors mixed feelings of pride and insecurity. The future is a term which suddenly acquired immediate meaning to the seniors. The time arrived for him to test the var- ious theories and ideas he has been formulating by find- ing his place in a confused society Complacent, passive living offer no challenge to the senior who has experienc- ed the challenge of learning in a college environment. For the adventure of purposefulness the senior stands ready. I 24 Mary Elizabeth Adams Asheboro Charles W. Alley Orlando, Fla. Becky Falls Andrews Lincolnton William Coke Ariail, III Summit, N. J. Very quickly caught up in the challenge of academic life at Pfeiffer College, freshmen must adjust to a new way of life Personal ideas, ideals, and ambitions become sub- ject to examination as each student embarks on a four- year adventure preparing for the future The expected complaints about midnight fire drills, dining hall food, and exams come. It’s hard to imagine anything costing less today, but elec- tricity does. In January, 1965, Duke Power made its 16th rate reduction since 1913 — the fifth in less than six years. Now the average cost of a kilowatt hour of electric- ity to Duke Power’s residential customers is actually one- third less than 20 years ago. These rate reductions have helped Piedmont Carolinians improve their standard of living through their ever increasing use of low-cost electricity for appliances heating. and CANOY NURSERIES Office Phone 625-4700 Residence Phone 625-4500 2403 North Fayetteville Street Extension Asheboro, N. Rt 2, Box 146, Connelly Springs, N C Zimmerman, Raymond 531 Carlton Ave., Millville, N. J. 214 Looking back upon the past ten months since I under- took the editorship of the Chimes, I sometimes wonder how everything was accomplished. I started with empty pages and up to the deadline it seemed as if they might stay that way. However with the help of an able staff all work was completed and the deadline met. It was with excitement and anticipation that I began this job last spring. As I undertook this challenge, I found that unlike what some people think, editing a yearbook is much more than sitting behind a desk and dictating orders. It is work—hard work—everyday. It is working late hours, missing meals, and cutting classes. There were many rough spots, headaches, and heartaches, but there were moments of joy and laughter too. Most of all there is satisfaction and a sense of achievement at the completion of the book. No one person can publish a book. It takes the hard work and dedication of many people. To these people I owe a personal note of thanks: Miss Nancy Henderson — who has been both friend and advisor and who has listened and helped with prob- lems and decisions whenever she was needed. Anne Black — who shared the heavy load so willingly. Ja ne Williams — friend and informal advisor who spent many hours writing copy and helping me with plans and decisions. Bonnie Kirby — who along with her staff spent many hours planning and drawing layouts. Jane Brady — for her personal help and encouragement and all the little things she did. Betfrie Keller and Janet Chance — for the many hours they spent typing copy, and typing and running off notices. Roy Cottle — for his financial advice and personal help. Barry Pote — for an excellent job of handling advertis- ing. Dale Patterson — for the many good pictures he spent so many hours working on. Larry Halsey — for the excellent coverage of the sports section and for his advice and help with the remainder of the book. Libby Crane and Frankie Cole — for the long hours of the tedious task of identifying and labeling the student pictures. Jackie Wetherington and Judy Powell — for the hours of work on the organization section. Mr. Bob Anderson — whose warm personality, excellent technical advice, and generosity gave me new insights in yearbook publishing. Mr. Bill Reasonover — who so generously opened his files to me to help me with pictures and who guided and ad- vised me. Jerry Thrift, Terry Callahan, and Bill Fagan — who did work on almost every phase of the yearbook and were always there when most needed. Jim Jones — who volunteered many pictures and spent hours in the Chimes room helping meet the deadline. Betsy Huneycutt — for the hours she spent on ad layouts. Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. Clup, Jr. — for the use of their beautiful home. Dr. Stokes, Administration, and Faculty — for their ad- vice, encouragement, and cooperation. Betty Jean Way — my roommate who put up with anger, tears, messy room, and who provided help and encourage- ment when I needed it most. My Friends and Especially My Family — who provided wonderful encouragement and help when the going was rough. The Entire Staff — who worked harder, longer, and more ably than any of the past three years. In the actual production of the book we received valuable help from Mr. A. F. Smith; photographers, Mr. J. M. Churchill and Mr. Charles Coggins; and Mr. Frank Flem- ing of Delmar Printing Company. We could not have managed without their advice and long hours of profes- sional service. The experience of editing the yearbook has been unique and rewarding. It has been a great year, but can only be a complete one if you the students find enjoyment in these pages. Elaine Huneycutt There is never enough Time, in reality, to enjoy all the people and events, to think through all the new ideas, to give back enough Time to the One who gave us all of it. However, if the realization of the shortness of our Time is paralleled by a wise use of it, then we reach a quality of existence called Living. 216 PRINTING COMPANY • Cl.orl,
