PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF PFEIFFER COLLEGE MISENHEIMER, NORTH CAROLINA DIANE THOMPSON EDITOR-IN-CHIEF GEORGE LEWIS BUSINESS MANAGER Dedication When the dedication of a yearbook is to be made, many things must be taken into consideration. These things range from a sincere interest in the students and the college to an active participation in the various facets of life. There are many such people to be-found on the Pfeiffer campus; this year we have chosen a man who excels in varied as- pects of life. He is known for the concrete interest he has taken in the justice of decisions relating to students; many students, whether or not he is their teacher, have found in him a friend when they really needed one. He is at home in any situation, varying from the political to the intellectual. Because of his wealth of experience in so many things, he is a much sought after speaker for civic organizations. A native of Bryson City, he attended the United States Naval Academy where he was a member of the football squad. He also wrestled professionally for several years. His B.A. and M.A. degrees were earned from Appalachian State Teachers’ College in 1949 and 1951 respectively. He has always taken a vital interest in politics and served in the State House as a representative from Swain County. Prior to coming to Pfeiffer in 1955, he was a high school principal. At Pfeiffer he is an associate professor of business administration and serves as a coach for both the tennis and wrest- ling teams. For several summers he held the posi- tion of supervisor of the waterfront at Lake Junaluska; in this capacity he became an unofficial recruiter for Pfeiffer and was the cause of many students’ deciding to come here. Because of his interest in the school and the com- munity, he has been secretary of the Water Associa- tion which was responsible for bringing the water supply from Albemarle to Pfeiffer and has spent much time with this. At present he lives on the campus with his wife and three children. It is thus that we are proud to dedicate this, the 1963 Chimes, to a man who has been so much a part of Pfeiffer’s growth and has spent such a large por- tion of his time in the students’ interest, W. Wallace Martin. 2 3 FALL Summer gracefully yields as time instructs nature to resume the splendor of fall. September summons the arrival of students to the gates of Pfeiffer and ushers in a new year of college life. For some, college is a new and stimulating experience. And those who manage to survive the bustle of Freshman Orientation Week usually find the rest of the year endurable. After d'etermining the location of Goode Hall, the post office, women’s dorms and the less interesting classroom buildings, the typical freshman male surveys the town. “And what do we do on weekends?” he invariably asks, hoping that no one will suggest studying. As upperclassmen return and the dormitories fill up, the year gets under way and Pfeiffer resumes its familiar appearance. Handshakes and embraces soon over, routine sets in. Students tread again on man-made paths, and drivers proceed at their own risk on winding, one-way streets. The campus is once again alive with activity; there are trips to the post office, to the dining hall for meals, back to the post office, and on to the Rec. As they make their way from one building to another, students passing the sundial touch it for luck. If one cares to venture farther, he may pass the library and the laundry, cross the bridge at Curly Tail, stroll past the soccer field and a row of faculty houses and find himself at the Pfeiffer lake. The filtering apparatus there would almost lead one to conclude that the water in the lake was actually being used for drinking purposes. Day darkens, and sounds of the chapel chimes, which can be heard all over campus, pierce the stillness and yet add to the serenity of evening. Soon students will be retiring to their rooms to contemplate the new year ahead of them. Get the shaving kit. I packed it under the muffler. Getting to know you . . . Afternoon, and the sundial casts its familiar shadow. Those who aren’t napping wander about, or sit down to talk. I don’t see why we can’t have a modern cafe- teria like other schools. 7 While the weather remains cool and crisp, students take to the out-of- doors to study. They can often be seen occupying the stone benches on front campus. 8 , In the fall the Pfeiffer Playmakers presented the comedy, The Lady's Not For Hinnitu . Shown here in that suc- cessful production are Jim Emery, Jim Hamilton, and Betty Richardson. Oh, it’s lovely! What did you say his name is? I wonder if Senator Kefauver knows that I’m a Republican. After supper many students head for the parlors of the girls’ dorms for friendship, relaxation, and fun. Silent walks, soft shadows, sweet memories, and you. 11 WINTER With little warning nature casts off the last vestiges of fall, leaving trees barren and the ground carpeted with abandoned leaves. The intense outdoor activity of summer and fall gives way to events within doors. Freshmen have been orientated, up- perclassmen have resigned themselves to another year of work, and professors have managed to devise impossible assignments. It is that time of year which students find especially confusing: it is too late to do anything about deficiency reports, and too early to start studying for final examinations. Though largely confined indoors during the winter months, everyone finds much to do besides classroom work. The student center is a favorite haunt of people seeking food', music, gossip, a card game, or just friendship. It is rumored that one can even buy books there. Also, students find time for basketball games, fine arts movies, plays, and concerts. And there are club meet- ings, dances, and parties continually taking place on campus. Then too, one may attend talent shows of questionable genius or engage in impromptu pep rallies in the dead of the night. As the year progresses, everyone becomes better acquainted with those with whom he lives, and the dormitories play an in- valuable part in intellectual and' emotional growth of students. Here, group discussions and the experience of independence help mold responsible, educated adults. Here also, if one happens to have a reticent roommate, a person may be able to do a little studying. The serious-minded student soon discovers that the college ex- perience involves research in the library for intellectual stimula- tion, worship in the chapel for spiritual sustenance, and parti- cipation in extra-curricular activities which lead toward well- rounded individuals. As the year continues, the meaning of edu- cation becomes complex and its significance great. 12 •r. When first semester’s final exams are over, students barely have time to breathe before second semester is upon them. Chin in, shoulders back, and don’t breathe for the next ten pages. It's not that why do they hny fingers? I mind studying always have to skin grafts, but take them from 15 So I told her I had gone to Greensboro to see my aunt. Yes, and his “aunt” has blue eyes, blonde hair, and a little red sports car. V.- 4. A • 1 BUSY 16 Between classes students rush to the Rec to stock up on food be- fore the next class begins. 2 plus 2 is 5? That can’t be right! Just close your eyes and point; it’s better that way. Please—no gravy on my french fries. 17 But don t you think the electric chair woulc be a little too severe? A lazy, lonely winter afternoon is brightened by the sun and friendly chats on the steps of Rowe. And how many cups does that make for you, Dean Whitley? Between sessions like this in the Rec, one can always attend classes. 19 With winter, comes snow. At least once dur- ing the cold months, the campus is beautifully white. It is also a time of skids, spills, and sprained sacroiliacs. Spring at Pfeiffer brings walks to the lake on quiet afternoons. Stand back, Hand; it’s my dime. This was a familiar sight on the Pfeiffer campus for several days as a movie on the college was being made. 21 SPRING Looking through a top-story window of Harris Hall, the science major finds it difficult to concentrate on his research. North campus is in full view and displays the greenery of a long- anticipated spring. Studying becomes increasingly laborious as everyone hastens outdoors to participate' in all the activities which typify spring. Baseball, tennis, and golf are as much a part of this season as sprightly bluebirds and sightly posies. The club meetings, movies, and other social events of the winter months continue to be a part of the active student’s campus life. For many students, spring fever is an inevitable part of spring. Sun bathing on the catwalks and behind men’s dorms is indicative of an idle streak which sunny weather easily brings out in people. Strolling contentedly about campus, sitting listlessly under trees, or greeting someone with an uncommonly broad smile, students experience the unique quality of this time of year. After spring vacation is over and term papers are theoretically done, a student need not be a perceptive one to realize that an- other year at Pfeiffer is almost finished. The last few weeks are full of intense activity. May Day festivities top off the year’s social events; culture rules supreme during the Fine Arts Festival. Some students are involved in last minute pre-exami- nation cramming; others reluctantly yield to what they deem a lost cause. The final days of the spring semester are also a time for ab- sorbing thought. Students reflect on the past year, usually promising themselves to study harder in the future. But these last few days weigh most heavily on the minds of seniors. As they consider their four years spent in college, they realize some- thing of the impact which this experience of learning has had upon their lives. They are not the same people who entered col- lege four years ago; their ideas and attitudes are different. Most seniors have formulated a philosophical basis for interpreting life—a foundation which future experiences will shatter and rebuild. For these who graduate, the process of learning has in- deed only begun. The year ends, and the campus is quickly evacuated. Winding around the Administration Building and past Harris Hall, the last cars leave—laden with suitcases and bound for home. 22 o Do you think the speaker knew that we have eleven o’clock classes? I think that I shall never see . . . 24 Goode Hall, home of the S.G.A., the Chimes, and the cafeteria. ' V•£ yvi l Nrt I1 WHNrTflTjUJuJ'S- '■ In the spring a young man's fancy . . . With the spring, touch football begins and the campus around the men’s dormitories seems to resemble the White House lawn. If it’s not lysimachi nummularia or calonyction aculeatum, I don't know what it is. In spite of spring fever and a strong desire to be outside as much as possible when warm weather comes, such less interest- ing activities as classes, labs, and trips to the library are inevit- able. 26 Did Mr. Stambaugh say to make it male or female? “Pomp and circumstance,” and good-byes. 27 TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICA TION 2-3 INTRODUCTION 4-28 ADMINISTRA TION, STAFF, AND FACULTY 30-51 CLA SSES 52-91 FEATURES 92-115 ORGANIZA TIONS 116-151 SPORTS 152-175 A D VER TISEMENTS 176-218 29 Who will ever forget the freshman year when all people on the faculty and administration were view- ed with awe and respect? As we progressed, how- ever, we found that they were not only to be res- pected, but they were also more than willing to be helpful in any way. To whom else would students turn with problems concerning grades, schedules, goals in life, and a million and one other things? The personal touch that comes with going to a small school is of major importance and is one thing that students are sincerely grateful for. With their sound experience and knowledge the personnel of Pfeiffer College help the students in so many ways. 1 A D MINISTRA TION, STAFF, AND FACULTY Dr. J. Lem Stokes II Dr. J. Lem Stokes, president of Pfeiffer College, has done an outstanding job of putting the school on the map. Since he has become president, many important changes and many steps for- ward have been taken. Through his active interest in every phase of college life, Dr. Stokes has helped to make Pfeiffer a school that will continue to grow and prosper in the years ahead . i 2 When not off on a trip, Dr. Stokes can often be found in his office, helping students in many ways. On sunny afternoons, a good game of tennis seems a welcome change from a very busy schedule. 33 Kenneth D. Holshouser Registrar Director of Admissions Walter I. CLA SSES 52 53 At long last, after many heartaches, many headaches, and more than our share of happy memories, we have reached the exalted status of seniors. Our last year at Pfeiffer has been filled with many activi- ties, such as selling hotdogs to raise money for the senior class project, and taking such things as the Graduate Record Exam. We will soon be leaving Pfeiffer for whatever lies ahead, and it is with a sudden sobering of thought that we realize this. Respon- sibility has begun to lay more heavily upon our shoulders; we are finally becoming mature adults. Our indecision about our major field has been dispelled and we are more sure of ourselves. We return to the campus in the fall with our minds made up with this will be our best year. We now assume the responsibility of guiding the underclassmen and become Big Sisters and counselors to them. But in the spring we realize that although this has been the best year yet, we have one more year and that will be the best ever. 68 Lawrence C. Adams, Asheville Carolyn Gregory Allen, Chesnee, S. C. We wonder at how one can get lost on such a small campus. Orien- tation week soon behind us, we settle down to closed study and the regular routine of classes. David Steven Zimmerman, Connelly Springs The feature section of any yearbook is a neces- sity. In it students who are outstanding in one or more phases of student life are recognized. But the feature section is more than simply recogni- tion. It is the memories of those happy moments when students are informed that they have been selected to Who's Who or that they have been chosen to be on the May Court. The excitement and tears of happiness on these occasions are things that no student so honored ever forgets. And another type of memory comes along with this section—the memory of the big dances that Pfeiffer has had, the work behind the scenes to make each one just a little bit better than the one before, and the feeling of accomplishment when eight o’clock on that fateful night finally arrives and the band begins to play and the students begin to arrive. These and other wonderful re- collections can be found within the pages that follow. Neill, B. Richardson, B. Tolar, T. 1 15 Time moves on and the faces on the Pfeiffer campus change with the time. But one thing remains as an integral part of campus life, and that is the organizations to which various stu- dents belong. Through an active participation in any of the many organizations on the campus, students are able to gain a sense of truly belonging and not just being “a little frog in a big pond.” They also gain leadership ability and a sense of responsi- bility. Pfeiffer is no exception to the general rule concerning clubs on a college campus. There is an extra-curricular activity to interest almost every student. These activities range from student gov- ernment to student publications to religious organizations; the variety is almost infinite. There are many headaches that go along with being active in an organization. But the rewards outnumber the headaches by far. What staff member can ever forget the harried and hurried nights trying to meet the deadlines on the Pfeiffer News and the Chimes, but the results were well worth the effort. Then there are the long debates on parliamentary procedure held by the stu- dent senate that should go down in history. The inspirational programs offered by the various religious groups leave students with a better idea of what college and life is all about. All in all, extra-curriculars play a vital role in college life and are one thing that no well-rounded student should be without. OR GA NIZA TIONS Left to right: Dean Whitley, Dean Bethea, Dick McKenzie, Frankie Dodson, Harold Payne, Donna Loflin, Fred Davenport. Seated: Larry Crumbley. Executive Council Student Government Association The Student Government Association is an integral part of campus life. All Pfeiffer students are members, and each student is able to exercise a voice in campus issues by spring elections and through legislature introduced on the Senate floor. The purposes of Student Government are to stimulate an educational environment, to promote the highest standards of integrity, to regulate all matters pertaining to student conduct not re- served to the jurisdiction of the deans, and in co- operation with the faculty and staff to advance the best interests of the student and the college. The Executive Council has general supervision over programs and all SGA committees. It con- sists of a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and presidents of Men and Women’s Councils. The Executive Council represents the student body to the Administration. During the school year, Student Government sponsors numerous recreational and cultural activities. In addition to the annual George Wash- ington Ball, SGA sponsored Friendship Week, the SGA concerts featuring the Four Freshmen, among others, and nationally known speakers such as Senator Estes Kefauver. 1 18 Harold Payne, Chairman. Student Senate The Student Senate consists of approximately twenty-four class sen- ators, day-student senators, and the executive council members. During the plenary sessions, senators investigate student problems, make recom- mendations, and enact legislation to solve these problems. The Senate also debates issues of current importance and expresses student opinion on these issues. It gathers data on topics through committee research and reports its findings. ] 19 The Women’s Council is composed of all women students. Serving as a link within Student Government, the Women’s Council works to represent women students and their in- terests to the administration. During the past year, the Women’s Council formulated a “Code of Regulations” designed to place more judicial power in the various house committees. They purchased a new television set for Rowe Dormitory and bicycles for the use of all women students. They prepared a display signifying the important women in Pfeiffer’s history, with emphasis on the present relationship of Pfeiffer Col- lege to the Women’s Society of Christian Service of the Methodist Church. Men’s Council President, Fred Davenport The purpose of the Men’s Council is to represent and further the best interests of the men students of the college, to regulate their conduct under the au- thority of the deans, and to promote personal respon- sibility and a high sense of honor. This year the Men’s Council has sponsored faculty speakers and parties in the men’s dormitories and has purchased sound speakers for the old cafeteria which will be transferred to the new cafeteria upon its com- pletion. Important headway has been made in giving men students responsibility in self-discipline and self- government. 121 I Washington Dorm Row 1: Donna Watson, Ruthie Gompf, Carol Hulick. Diane Thompson Editor, 1963 Chimes 1963 Chums The Chimes, Pfeiffer's yearbook, is indeed an important part of the campus. Work begins on the new issue as soon as school opens, for the entire layout must be ready to go to press by the last of January. The staff members work long and hard in the Chimes office be- low the cafeteria. Many are the head- aches when pictures do not come out or copy is late. But somehow the yearbook is always ready to be distributed follow- ing Awards Day in May, and then every- one on the staff breathes a sigh of relief and realizes that it was well worth the worry and work to be able to have a yearbook that one can be proud of. IJfptffpr 5feuis The sound of typewriters, a ringing phone, the discovery of a hole on the back page—all are a part of Monday night for the News. It has been a long string of Monday nights, but it has been a good year for the paper. The number of total pages published has been increased and Robin and her staff have covered many new and dif- ferent subjects. Senator Kefauver, Dr. Bowen and his movie career, the Cuban Crisis were all important stories. Then there was the canceled appearance of Representative Halleck. The staff certainly had fun redoing that paper! The Pfeiffer News wasn’t content only pub- lishing a weekly paper, however, so the staff sponsored several projects, such as the Sadie Hawkins Dav Dance and the safetv drive. Merry madness—that just about sums up the Pfeiffer News this year. Somehow, however, that next edition was always ready for the students on Wednesday afternoon. A group of apprentices work hard on an issue in order to be- come full-fledged members of the staff. The enthusiastic fans make the trips across Curly Tail to the soccer field for each home game. There they and the cheerleaders in their attractive black and gold uniforms cheer the team on to victory. As winter approaches, sports must of necessity move indoors. In Mitchell Gymnasium the yells for each point the Falcons make in basketball games can be heard all over campus. When the team travels away from home, the sports fans remain glued to their radios to see how the team will do. On nights when there are no basketball games, the wrestling team often takes the mat for matches. Here the spirit is more tense and the cheers more sub- dued as the fans go through the agony along with the men on the mat. Spring is always a welcome time of year and in sports it is no exception. Students who make no pretense of being good enough to make the team can be seen whacking the ball across the net on the tennis courts. Shouts from the baseball field as the Falcons win another game are frequently heard. And the golf and tennis teams play their individual matches in unsung glory. mm v ’? : Hag k'; ' ‘ r USwvi n®KMv A l, J jj r '3 grass . •. mmmM im W 1 •%. • ■ • i vf4- . fc 7 M . r ' ■ Vf u ,“ ■$ .«M ► ? •. Sporting a 26-11 mark overall and winning 16 of 19 conference games last year boosted the Falcons to top position in the Carolinas Conference. Represent- ing the 19 colleges in North and South Carolina which make up the NAIA District 26, they went on to the National Regional Tournament held in Statesboro, Georgia, where they downed Carson Newman and Georgia Southern in the first two contests; but the Georgia team pounded too strong and defeated Pfeiffer in the next two games. Despite the loss of their ace third sacker, Homer Brawley (.322) and hinder Hal Stealey (8-1), Coach Ferebee belives that the Falcons may do even better this year with veterans returning in all nine positions and a host of freshmen joining the squad to give them support. Ewing, Holcomb, and DiMuccci lead the list of returnees. Ewing won the batting title last year with a lusty .422. Catcher Holcomb hit at a .377 clip while Pitcher DiMucci won 6 and lost 3 for Pfeiffer. Hats off to NAIA’s coach of the year, Joe Ferebee, and his 1962 Carolinas Conference Champions.
