In appreciation for all that he has done for the students and for the college, we proudly dedicate this edition of the Chimes to Dr. Hoyt E. Bowen. We, the students, think of Dr. Bowen especially because of one of his best qualities: his ability to establish a rapport with his students. His love of the theatre sparkles in his classroom lectures, and drama and other literary forms come to life through his depiction. Students in his English courses always carry away part of his love for literature and fond memories of his particular de- votion to the ballad and to Shakespeare. Dr. Bowen came to Pfeiffer College in 1956 as Head of the Division of Language and Literature. His background in education includes study at Piedmont College, Columbia University, and Flori- da State University where he received his doctorate. While he was a student, he appeared in several dramatic productions, among them the Twentieth Century Fox production of I'd Climb the Highest Mountain. He is a member of Sigma Tau Delta, Delta Psi Omega, Phi Kappa Delta, MLA, and AAUP. Prior to 1946 Dr. Bowen served as a Lieu- tenant Commander in the United States Navy, and saw service in the South Pacific and in the Phil- ippines. He was retired as a Naval pilot in 1946 be- cause of injuries received in a mid-air collision. Married to the former Katherine McManus of Jacksonville, Florida, Dr. Bowen, his wife, and their son, Edwin, live on the campus. Dr. Bowen talks with a student after class.

A warm sunrise lingering over dew-spread trees, brightening white columns, and reflecting off the roofs of the campus gives a lonely and almost empty look in the early hours of the day. The spire of the Chapel, stretching toward the sky, dominates the landscape for miles around. The white columns, the arches between dormitories, curving iron steps, worn walkways and dirt paths, scarred and clean bricks, roads winding through the campus and over a small bridge, faculty homes, athletic facili- ties are part of the atmosphere of our campus. During the peaceful periods of the day or night there are usually a few students to be seen or quiet voices to be heard. The peaceful day is accented by the reverent melody of chimes as the sun nears the horizon. At night there are the reflections of lights. Occa- sionally there's a shadow to break the spot-lighted quiet as fig- ures move across a walk. God's seasons lend a helping hand in changing the campus scene. Winter winds make icy spectacles, but the quiet con- tinues as a solitary student makes tracks in the snow. Spring shade and a warm breeze call the student out of his room to study under trees. While he studies he can probably hear the quiet thumping of a tennis ball as it bounces across a net on part of the Pfeiffer campus. 4
