I THE PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF PFEIFFER COLLEGE AT MISENHEIMER, NORTH CAROLINA Nancy Miller—Editor-in-Chief Gordon Scott—Business Manager In appreciation for all that he has done for the students and for the college, we proudly dedicate this edition of the Chimes to Dr. Hoyt E. Bowen. We, the students, think of Dr. Bowen especially because of one of his best qualities: his ability to establish a rapport with his students. His love of the theatre sparkles in his classroom lectures, and drama and other literary forms come to life through his depiction. Students in his English courses always carry away part of his love for literature and fond memories of his particular de- votion to the ballad and to Shakespeare. Dr. Bowen came to Pfeiffer College in 1956 as Head of the Division of Language and Literature. His background in education includes study at Piedmont College, Columbia University, and Flori- da State University where he received his doctorate. While he was a student, he appeared in several dramatic productions, among them the Twentieth Century Fox production of I'd Climb the Highest Mountain. He is a member of Sigma Tau Delta, Delta Psi Omega, Phi Kappa Delta, MLA, and AAUP. Prior to 1946 Dr. Bowen served as a Lieu- tenant Commander in the United States Navy, and saw service in the South Pacific and in the Phil- ippines. He was retired as a Naval pilot in 1946 be- cause of injuries received in a mid-air collision. Married to the former Katherine McManus of Jacksonville, Florida, Dr. Bowen, his wife, and their son, Edwin, live on the campus. Dr. Bowen talks with a student after class. DR. HOYT E. BOWEN A warm sunrise lingering over dew-spread trees, brightening white columns, and reflecting off the roofs of the campus gives a lonely and almost empty look in the early hours of the day. The spire of the Chapel, stretching toward the sky, dominates the landscape for miles around. The white columns, the arches between dormitories, curving iron steps, worn walkways and dirt paths, scarred and clean bricks, roads winding through the campus and over a small bridge, faculty homes, athletic facili- ties are part of the atmosphere of our campus. During the peaceful periods of the day or night there are usually a few students to be seen or quiet voices to be heard. The peaceful day is accented by the reverent melody of chimes as the sun nears the horizon. At night there are the reflections of lights. Occa- sionally there's a shadow to break the spot-lighted quiet as fig- ures move across a walk. God's seasons lend a helping hand in changing the campus scene. Winter winds make icy spectacles, but the quiet con- tinues as a solitary student makes tracks in the snow. Spring shade and a warm breeze call the student out of his room to study under trees. While he studies he can probably hear the quiet thumping of a tennis ball as it bounces across a net on part of the Pfeiffer campus. 4 ■ Students sit on the campus in front of Rowe. 5 As the sun sets in the west, two lone students, another day behind them, make the final evening trip to the post office Maybe this time there will be a letter from her. JKftM'd The cafeteria staff is up late once more . . . Must have scorched the water again. Spring comes to Pfeiffer and the campus is a picture of beauty once again. The leaves are green, the breeze is cooling, and everything is peaceful. It's a refreshing sight in the midst of all the study. 8 9 10 A peaceful hour in a busy day across the tracks is revealed to highway passersby. An appealing sight across campus is this one after a fresh snow has covered the lawn, shrubs, and trees. . . . you should hang your head; it doesn't take that long to say good-by to her. 12 Late at night the campus becomes surprisingly quiet at times and the lamp and porch lights shine on empty walks and drives. 13 • • Studying, participating in discussion, inquiring, listening to a lecture are ways of gaining wisdom at Pfeiffer. Students lean over books in the library while someone thumbs through a daily paper and another searches frantically in the periodical files. In the dormitories a student flops on his bed with his books as the accented beat of a stereo comes from the adjacent room. In the Rec, where quiet is an unknown word and solitude is a lost hope, a student with his chin in his hands forces him- self to concentrate. Occasionally among the crowd in the gym is a student who reads frantically between the highlights of a public event. On front campus students sprawl beneath oaks, alternately watching passersby and studying. Warm afternoons find couples sitting on steps of the post office or of a dormitory working math problems while students laden with books trail past. In the dormitory parlor two students study for endless hours. A student panel is born to discuss world problems and affairs while their classmates ask questions and listen to their answers. The lights burn late in a science lab as a single stu- dent plods through routine experiments of discovering. These and others are the ways students grow into maturity and grad- uate into another life. But that's another story. It is in Trustee meetings like this where the future of Pfeiffer is decided. A few students remain among the vacant chairs to check over their examinations. Dr. Kirtley Mather and Dr. Russell discuss religion and science. Wonder if the lab assistant is listening in? A lone student casts a shadow as he studies un- der a campus oak. 18 Facial expressions show that the research papers are due very soon. English 101 themes—will there ever be an end to them? 19 Some students seem to like the fabric display; oth- ers simply look on Betsy points out the quality of a painting. George is interested, but Russell doesn't seem to like it very much. 20 Dr. Stephenson's face shows a look of pride as a student amazingly scores nine on the Physic Depart- ment's strength tester. (idiot... College life is filled with sounds of many activities. At various times in various places, the yell of yea team and the roar of crowd cheers at athletic events vibrate the air in the gym or on the field. There's the melodic sound of a hymn rising from the students worshiping and a minister's voice lifted in adora- tion. The applause of pleased viewers at a campus play comes from the auditorium. The blaring rhythm of the juke box, shuffling feet, endlessly chattering students, rattle of ice in coke cups, the exclamation of one with burned fingers from the drippings of a too-full cup of coffee — the sounds spill over into the hall outside the Rec. Off in a dormitory a group dis- cussing the solution to the world's problems or their next date, a live band in the gym, a TV soap opera in the parlor, a piano, a lecture, a sermon, typewriters, birds chirping outside the dor- mitory window, the lady in the post office announcing the last mail of the day, an instructor saying howdy to a student — you know them because you've been around the campus. It's fun, joy, and laughter. It's college — the life of a new idea or an old one. Friendship Week, needless to say, is a rather popular event on our campus. The Student Government sponsored event al- lows students to visit in one another's dormitories. The music of a newly formed Pfeiffer trio supplies the rhythm at a dance. The beard which appeared during the first semester goes well here with some of the old ballads being sung. The President's Reception is a time for students to get together and meet new friends. And, incident- ally, punch and cake always add to the attractive- ness. 27 The Student Government say! Floyd Dec. 7, 1961 To trace the history of a liberal arts college through its development from an elementary school to a high school to a junior college and finally to a senior college is a thrilling assignment. One could hardly say that this is a unique type of history, but certainly it does not conform to the usual pattern. It was in 1885 that Miss Emily Prudden, the daughter of a Congregational minister from Con- necticut, erected a two-story, eleven-room house on the side of Lick Mountain, six miles from Lenoir and four miles from Hudson, North Carolina. She had previously visited this section and had become disturbed because so many young people in the remote mountain areas did not have adequate educational opportunities. This institution for mountain children was given the name Oberlin Home and School ' By 1930, Miss Prudden saw that the operation of the school had outgrown her strength, and she kindly offered the school as a gift to the Wom- an's Home Missionary Society of the former Meth- odist Episcopal Church. The conversations between the church and Miss Prudden culminated in the property being transferred to the women of the church, and since 1903, Pfeiffer College has been connected with an agency of The Methodist Church. By 1909, the women of the church saw that the school had outgrown its usefulness in that geographical area, and it was moved in the spring of 1910 to Misenheimer, North Carolina. By the time of its removal, it had advanced to secondary school status and remained a secondary school until 1928, when the trustees authorized that col- lege work be begun. Junior college status was declared officially in January, 1932, but it was not until 1942 that the junior college was accred- ited by the Southern Association. In 1954, the Board voted to undertake a senior college program, and the institution moved rapidly in this direction. The first senior class was graduated in 1957, and accreditation by the Southern Association came in 1959. As one examines the history of this college, he is led to say that it is the lengthened shadows of a number of people Dare names be called'5 Miss Emily Prudden, the founder Mrs. Mary Mitch- ell, an early benefactress . . . Mr. W. S. Sharpe, the first bearing the title president . . . Mr. Chi M. Waggoner, the second president . . . Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pfeiffer, whose large gifts saved the college in the early thirties and whose continuing gifts guaranteed the on-going of the academic pro- gram . . . Mrs. W. H. C. Goode, whose leader- ship of the Board of Trustees helped fashion school policies over a period of many years. As with Paul, these words come forth: And what more shall I say? For Time would fail me to tell of . . . all . . . who through faith conquered . . July 1, 1953, and a new era began with the arrival of Dr. J. Lem Stokes, President. The ex- pansion of the college since this memorable date may be called his dream child, and the implemen- tation of the dream is constantly being realized not only through efforts of the dreamer but also through the devoted service of faithful colleagues over a period of years, by gifts from the Gustavus and Louise Pfeiffer Research Foundation, the Woman's Society of Christian Service, and other interested friends. To appreciate Pfeiffer College is to visit its expanding plant, to see its varied facilities, to know its versatile faculty, to converse with its eager and alert student body, to study its sound academic offerings, and to hear of the support given to it by friends and agencies too numerous to list. There has to be in the whole life of an institu- tion a particular formula for success. Key words culled from reports from 1885 to the present day f -.1 11 ' L' • i are faith, sacrifice, vision, work, pray- er. At the beginning of the organized expansion under President Stokes, a prayer candle was light- ed, and the college community sought God's guid- ance. Periodically this candle is brought forth to light the way when we are baffled and to express appreciation for the blessings of God. At this moment Pfeiffer College is grateful that it has been led of God, and it commits itself afresh to a system of higher education where there is no divorce between religion and education. Pfeiffer College is devoted to a program which is academ- ically sound and Christian without apology. 30 All Hail, Black and Gold! Thy colors unfold. Mathematics STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION Homer Brawley President of the Student Government Association The Student Government Association is an integral part of all campus activities. All Pfeiffer students are members of this organization and each is able to voice his opinion in the elections held each spring. The purpose of the Student Government is to regulate all matters pertaining to the conduct of the students of the college which are not reserved to the jurisdiction of the deans and in co-operation with the staff and faculty to promote the best inter- ests of the individual student and the col- lege. The Student Council is the governing body of the Student Government Associa- tion. It is comprised of the officers, two representatives from each class, and the presidents from the Men's and Women's Student Government Associations. Through the action which this body takes, it at- tempts to co-ordinate the other governmen- tal organizations and endeavors to pro- mote understanding between the student body and the administration. Another important part of the Student Government Association is the Judicial Committee which is composed of Student Council members. It is set up to act on the violations of college rules and regula- tions which are not designated to the MSGA or the WSGA. 62 Allen Fisher., Keith Crisco, Sonja Britt, Scott Graham, Jennie Sue Johnston, Sylvia Funder- burke, Homer Brawley, Dean Whitley, Robin Clark, Max Walser, Dean Bethea, Linda Jones, and Darrell Ayers. The Student Government Association endeavors throughout the year to sponsor many recreational activities. Among them are various dances, Coaches Appreciation Day, and Friendship Week which is high- lighted by such events as open-house in the dorms, a soc-hop, and a faculty talent show. One of the major events of the year is the George Washington Ball which is also sponsored by the Student Government Association. 63 Long, Thompson, Jones, Dean Bethea, Boyte, Stone, Fespermon, Griffin, Johnston, Beadles, Jarrett. Linda Jones, President w. s. G. A. The Women's Student Government Association is an essential part of the student government and serves as a link between the women students and the administration. Composed of all women stu- dents, its main purpose is to represent them and further their interests. During the past year, the W. S. G. A. has pur- chased two new television sets for girls' dormi- tories and installed full-length mirrors where they are needed. They are sponsoring along with the M. S. G. A. the project of putting up direction signs on campus to aid visitors. They have also studied the possibility of getting a new type of class ring for women students. 64 M S G. A. The Men's Student Government Association pro- poses to create a strength of unity among the men students on the campus. The M.S.G.A. has co-op- eration of the deans, faculty, and staff in promoting the interests of the individual. This organization regulates the conduct of the students under the authority of the college, and promotes responsibility and a high sense of honor. The Men's Student Government Council is com- posed of the officers of the MSGA, presidents of the men's dormitories, and representatives from the men day students. Remember the twisting issue, the Pfeiffer- Merner convocation, April Fool's Day, Stan Thompson and fallout shelters, Dave Brubeck. Every issue had its drawing card for campus comment; each one had its memory for those who worked on the stories. The college newspaper is published weekly through- out the academic year. With a staff chosen on the basis of journalistic ability, the paper strives to represent the various points of view of the students and to give fair and adequate news coverage to all campus organizations and events. The right to reject part or all of any mate- rial submitted to the News for publication is the privilege of the staff. However, publishing a paper is so much more than this; and making a paper live and func- tion became the primary goal of the staff this year. In addition to publishing a well-written, well-read paper, the Pfeiffer News played host to the Carolina Collegiate Press Association convention in December and sponsored a number of discussion groups. Third row: Joe Martini, Billy Wynne, Bob Frank, Dennis Hottinger, Ted Blake. Co-captains, Bob Frank and Henry Johnson, have continuously led the Falcon attack against all opposition. The Falcon basketball team had its best season in several years under Coach Francis Essie. Essie, in his second year as coach, relied heavily on Bob Frank. Frank, the team's high point man, was the main spark in the Falcon lineup. The team loses co-captains Bob Frank and Henry Johnson along with Hal Stealey. But with the excellent reserve strength to be found in the underclassmen, the student body can look forward to another good year in 1962-1963. 4-4 The Falcons played one of its most impressive games in history on January 13, 1962, when they posted a major upset of small colleges with a 72-50 double overtime victory against the Crusaders of Belmont Ab- bey. The two teams were deadlocked at 48-all at the end of regulation time. During the first overtime period neither team scored, but as the second period began, Bob Frank hit a field goal and from then on it was all Pfeiffer as the Falcons ran off to whack one of the top-ranked small college powers in the East. Thirty sec- onds later, Frank hit on two free throws and it was not long before the Falcons had a six-point advantage as Frank hit again on a pair of free throws. Harold McManus canned two free throws and that virtually sewed up the victory for Pfeiffer. But the Falcons would not quit. They increased their lead to 61-48 before the Crusaders finally scored. Belmont Abbey pressed the rest of the way trying to regain pos- session of the basketball and the Falcons used their fast break to perfection to grind out the final 22-point margin. Frank hit on six field goals and 1 3 of 18 free throws for 25 points, Lentz canned 16 points and McManus 13 for a share of the scoring honors for Pfeiffer. He also proved to be good with the stick as he posted a .305 batting average. Coach Ferebee led his team to on 18-8 record and to second place in hte Falcons first year as a member of the Old North State Conference. They beat every team in the conference at least once. Since Ferebee arrived at These Falcons hit for an average of .303 during the 1961 baseball season. They are Gruber, Hadden, Ewing, Pfeffer, Eaton, Lingerfelt, and Russell. Coach Ferebee tells team how to detect opposing pitchers' weakness and how to hide the ball before they deliver. Sophomore, Randy Ewing, provided the punch that the Falcons needed in right field last season. Ewing bat- ted .309 during his rookie year with Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer in 1956 his aspirants have provided him with in overall record of 85 wins compared with only 24 losses or a very respectable .780 percentage. ns Baseball fans always love to jaw with the umpire during the course of a season. Here is a crowd pleaser, but don't let the picture fool you. Coach Ferebee believes in true sportsmanship, and his teams have not only brought forth a winning season every year under his command, but have also displayed the best sports- manship to be found in the conference. Ronald Rayle shows returning Falcon pitchers how he threw his curve ball in posting a 5-1 record during the season. His victories included two shutouts. Players watch- ing are Pine, 2-1; Stealey, 4-1. Bob Ellis was a utility man for the Falcons and filled in num- erous times when Coach Ferebee shifted his batting order due to in|ured players and while looking for the right punch needed to beat the opposition. FENCING Coach Jackson says . . . Fencing was organized on the Pfeiffer campus during the fall of I960, and has continued since then on an informal, club basis. Membership is open to any who are interested in the sport. Although lacking in experience and eguipment, the Talons have met a number of other teams in the area on a non-varsity basis. This year they have fenced against teams from Citadel, V.M.I., Clemson, and Winston Salem. Repeat matches are planned with each of these as well as with Au- gusta Military Academy and the University of North Carolina. Plans are also being made to send representatives to the South-Eastern Invitational Tournament this spring. First row: Jim Hamilton, Bonnie Noles, Ed Trout, Bill Brown. Second row: Lance Finnegan, Rick Neal, Al Spivey, Tom Hinkle, Mr. Rex Stambaugh, R. C. Jackson. Absent when picture was made were Rheta Mason and Churl Soon Yim. Here we find Jackson looking on as he teaches his Talons the fundamentals of fencing. The two participants are Mason and Stambaugh ( ' Top row: Bob Asher, Jim Chaffer, Skip Lahser, Wes Livengood, Red Gabriel. Middle row: Sherrill Lowder, Boyd Stokes, Butch Albee, Roger Mills, Terry Still, Bob Hand.Bottom row: John Brandau, George Woodward, Dick Gardner, Larry Crumbley, Bill West, Buford Pike, Ken Higginbotham. Coach Wallace Martin I 54 Coach Martin says . . . Wrestling ranks as one of the oldest sports in the world and ancient Greek legends tell of wrestling ex- ploit of Ajax, Ulysses and other heroes. At Pfeiffer College wrest- ling holds a similar position with respect to antiquity, having been inaugerated with the four year program at Pfeiffer, some seven years ago. As yet however, none of our exploits have become legend- ry, but none the less we have a team of which we can be proud. Wrestlers must be strong, agile, and in perfect condition. Almost every muscle in their bodies is called upon in a match. This makes wrestling one of the most healthful sports, but it also demands skill and intelligence in the application of balance and agility. A small, clever wrestler may often pin a much heavier, stronger opponent; however, in our collegiate competition we wrestle in eight weight classes which are designated by the conference in which the team is affiliated. Our wrestling program is not to be confused with the exhibition that is held in padded boxing rings, that allows kicking, punching, biting, gouging, and other 'crowd-pleasing' tactics. Captain Asher stands between co-captoins Larry Crumbley and Boyd Stokes. These men were the only lettermen to re- turn to Cooch Martin's mat team for the 1962 season. Heavyweight Bob Ascher tries for cross face against opponent from Wash- ington and Lee. George Woodward has control of challenger from Washington and Lee. Lorry Crumbley moves for take down against Swain from Appalachian Bill West on outstanding against a Washington and performer from Arlington, Va., tries for a bar Lee General 155 ,4 ' John Stokes, Boyd Stokes, Barry Magee, Bob Davis, Brown Gardner, Penny Straw. TENNIS Coach Martin says . . . In 1961, Pfeiffer witnessed the most active tennis program in its history. There were more persons participating, more and better publicity programs and more organized matches. For much of this expanded program the players them- selves can take credit. A large number of interested students offer themselves as candidates for the team. There are many more students who would benefit inmeasurably both in body and in spirit by a program of wholesome exercise and refreshing relaxation in becoming acquainted with the game. Tennis is both a team and an individual sport requiring long hours of practice and discipline in order to improve your game 7 Barry Magee has proven to be one of the best players in the conference. Coach Wallace Martin The Falcon golf team, under Coach Essie, posted a record of nine wins against seven losses last season. This was the fourth season that golf has been played at Pfeiffer as a competitive sport, and the Falcons have posted a winning season every year. Last year's team was composed of Skom- sky, Lisk, Richards, and O'Hea Lisk and Richards are the only men returning to the regular line-up. Coach Essie looks forward to building a respectable team around these return- ees and newcomers Bob Rogers, Yates Neagle, and Earl Smith. The Falcon golf team plays every team in the conference during the season and this year they will participate in the conference tournament in Boone during the month of May. Junior Bill Richards prepares to drive ball down fairway. Richards was a starter on last year's team. Bobby Lisk, senior from Badin, N. C, practices shots which proved to be helpful as Bob proved to be a very consistent golfer last season. GOLF Bill Richards, George Skomsky, Pat O'Hea, and Bob Lisk discuss various types of clubs with Coach Francis Essie. INTRAMURALS Buddy Way tosses ball up to open the boys intramural basketball season. Pfeifferette prepares to belt softball in girls intramural game. The intramural program has grown to be a very popular form of activity for the students at Pfeiffer. This recreational program is offer- ed to those who do not participate in the intercollegiate program. The women that take part in the intramurals have a chance to earn a black sweater with a gold P . All they have to do is acquire the re- quired number of points that is set up under the rules of the Women's Athletic Association. The men find the intramural pro- gram an ideal means of spending their free time. Their teams are composed of groups found in the different dormitories. The cham- pions of each sport are awarded trophies for their outstanding per- formances. . - Joyce Hunter fires ball to Joyce Moser. Biggs tries one-hand push shot in game between the Chugs and Dun- geon Dwellers. A free-throw is attempted in girls' intramural game. ill . ;; '■i_y ;• 7 ■•-r At long last we have arrived—the 1962 graduating seniors. We as indi- viduals all have memories of college days which will linger with us like the warm afterglow of a dusky summer twi- light. We will receive our diplomas and move out to take our places in the world. The place we leave vacant will be filled by another class. We'll remember each path to each class. We'll keep in touch with ourfriends, and we will have memories that will remain alive and glowing throughout the coming years. We were scared and green, excited and homesick, but before long we met new friends, old friends, cute boys, and cute girls. Orientation was a mass confusion of tests, dances, teas, unpack- ing in cubby holes, meeting roommates and trying to settle down. Then in full force came advisors, schedules, registration lines and money lines. Next came our first classes, professors, book lists, book lines and groaning pocketbooks. This was the beginning of the realization of a dream. Next year we;ll be sophomores.
