The polished abstraction and the lofty phrase are commonplace in dedicatory remarks. But in the pres- ent case, the direct state- ment is more appropriate. This book is dedicated to a man who believes that problems are best solved by a frontal attack of hard work. As a student at Catawba College he set his goals high, and then went to work to achieve them. He graduated with a high academic rec- ord, received the Best Athlete Award, and was presented the Whitener Medal as the outstanding male graduate. His reputation as a resourceful worker fol- lowed him in his Navy years. It pursued him throughout his distinguished career as a high school baseball coach, during which time his teams won many honors, including a state cham- pionship. Accepting the challenge of a Salisbury veterans’ organization, he carried its baseball team to state and regional championships. In 1956 he came to Pfeiffer. Again he went to work. He manned pick and spade, pencil and telephone. Out of a North Campus bog emerged a beautiful athletic field, and out of a collection of untried youths he produced the best collegiate baseball organization in North Carolina. His record now stands at 67-16, with an impressive number of his proteges having found their way into professional baseball. Of course we are proud of the record of our Director of Athletics. But more than this, we admire this man with the wry smile and modest demeanor who is quietly at work bringing to Pfeiffer the same mature approach to athletics that we have come to associate with its academic and administrative life. We pay tribute to this man to whom, as all his players know, the words “Play Ball!” actually mean “Get to Work!” In appreciation of his hard work in our behalf, we proudly dedicate this book to 5 JOSEPH S.
