I PRESENTING. EDITH CHRISTY AL CAPEHART . . .. EDITOR-IN-CHIEF BUSINESS MANAGER Pubitidied by ike tudenkl cd PFEIFFER COLLEGE MISENHEIMER, NORTH CAROLINA DEDICATION 4 The polished abstraction and the lofty phrase are commonplace in dedicatory remarks. But in the pres- ent case, the direct state- ment is more appropriate. This book is dedicated to a man who believes that problems are best solved by a frontal attack of hard work. As a student at Catawba College he set his goals high, and then went to work to achieve them. He graduated with a high academic rec- ord, received the Best Athlete Award, and was presented the Whitener Medal as the outstanding male graduate. His reputation as a resourceful worker fol- lowed him in his Navy years. It pursued him throughout his distinguished career as a high school baseball coach, during which time his teams won many honors, including a state cham- pionship. Accepting the challenge of a Salisbury veterans’ organization, he carried its baseball team to state and regional championships. In 1956 he came to Pfeiffer. Again he went to work. He manned pick and spade, pencil and telephone. Out of a North Campus bog emerged a beautiful athletic field, and out of a collection of untried youths he produced the best collegiate baseball organization in North Carolina. His record now stands at 67-16, with an impressive number of his proteges having found their way into professional baseball. Of course we are proud of the record of our Director of Athletics. But more than this, we admire this man with the wry smile and modest demeanor who is quietly at work bringing to Pfeiffer the same mature approach to athletics that we have come to associate with its academic and administrative life. We pay tribute to this man to whom, as all his players know, the words “Play Ball!” actually mean “Get to Work!” In appreciation of his hard work in our behalf, we proudly dedicate this book to 5 JOSEPH S. FEREBEE Life on the Pfeiffer (His is made up of many individual experienlKPrrhese facets com- bine to create a great mosaic, with each experi- ence lending its color to the entity, “Pfeiffer.” The 1961 Chimes attempts to depict our recent experiences in these terms — as a pattern of pieces that are intensely individual, yet pieces which have a unique and special meaning as a whole. Individuals, groups, events, and activities share in our impressions of this multi-colored mosaic. Perhaps this record will serve not only to recall people and events, but to evoke some comprehension of that larger experience, “Pfeiffer,” in which each has had an integral part. It draws its membership from inter- ested students who are thinking of a career in physical educa- tion or the related fields. The functions of the club are to provide leadership for student intramural and recreational activities on campus and to promote inquiry and study of a professional kind. LE CERCLE FRANCAIS Le Cercle Francais, organized to promote among Pfeiffer students greater interest in the French-speaking peoples, their language and cus- toms, advanced in increased membership and in greater variety of activity. This year the club sponsored a French Christmas service and a French Easter program. Activity features of the club were a trip to Charlotte for dinner at a well-known French restaurant and a continued recreational program. Through its affiliation with the Collegiate Academy of the North Carolina Academy of Sciences the club is often able to include speeches by guest professors in its programs, in addition to addresses by members of the Pfeiffer faculty. During the past year the club participated in two field trips sponsored by the Collegiate Acad- emy. The first was made to the Duke Marine Lab for a Collecting tour; the second, to a tobacco plant in Raleigh for a tour of the labora- tories. The annual spring picnic was held at Happy’s Lake. After electing Blair Beasley, Ann McKenzie, Bill Brown, and Judy Threatte as officers of their organization, the Playmakers immediately got underway with their first production of the year, Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie. Following this initial success was John Van Druten’s Bell, Bool:, and Candle. For the Christmas holiday season, the Play- makers assisted the Charlotte Opera Company in its production of Amahl and The Night Visitors. Subsequently, a one-act play, One Man's Moon, by Dennis Savage, was produced in cooperation with the Religion Department of the college. The fourth play, a major production of the season, was Accent on Youth, a three act comedy by Simon Rapelson. For the Fine Arts Festival in April the Playmakers presented The Crucible by Arthur Miller. The play, a dramatic portrayal of the Salem witch trials, brought the ’60-’61 season to a powerful and dramatic end. 97 «v r : 3-. n r s SPORTS First row: Bob Ascher, Joel Tournquist, Charlie Chan, Bill Hughes, Jerry Mason, George Pfeffer, Sam Tesh, Darrell Ayers, Don Bryan, George Conger. LT.N.C. proved too strong for the Falcons in a 4-1 decision. Then, having gained enough experience to make themselves one of the soccer powerhouses in this area, the Falcons topped a strong N. C. State team 5-4, clobbered Belmont Abbey 7-0, and took Davidson 1-0 on a penalty kick by Cap- tain Baldwin, in one of the finest defensive games of the season. Appalachian felt the fury of the Falcons as they were trampled 3-1. Bel- mont Abbey, smarting from a previous Pfeiffer rout, was smashed again by the high flying Fal- cons by the score of 3-0. A repeat of an earlier defensive game with Davidson saw the Falcons drop a tightly con- tested game 2-1. In the final game of the sea- son, a fired up Blue Devil team thrashed the Falcons 8-0. An overall record of 6 wins with 4 defeats saw Pfeiffer emerge as a team to be reckoned with in future seasons. However, the Falcons will be hurt by the loss of co-captain Denny Baldwin and his fine defensive play. Goalie Sid Jones kept the soccermen alive with an average of 21 saves per game and 33 saves in the final games against Duke. The two leading scorers for P. C. were Huh and Pfeffer who between them scored half of the total goals. Bruce Hayes and Pudge Ayers, played able soccer throughout the season and are expected to be major threats in upcoming contests. I Coach Lefko congratulates co-captains Bob Taylor and Dennis Baldwin on an outstanding season. Wan Huh is mobbed by his teammates after a winning penalty kick. Second row: Bill Claypoole, Dennis Hottinger, Larry Greene, Bob Frank, Buck Kindred, Henry Johnson, Hal Stealey. Coach Francis Essie BASKETBALL Coach Francis Essie, faced with a rebuilding job of tremendous size, built his first team around eight men: three freshmen, four juniors, and only one senior. Guard Vince Hoch, the only senior in the lineup, steadied the team with his deliberate style of play. Bob Frank, out until after Christmas with a knee injury, came back to supply the needed “big man” to pull in vital rebounds. Forward Bill Claypoole, shooting one of the most accurate jump shots P.C. has ever seen, was a persistent double column man on a team that was often deficient in a co-ordinated offense. Hal Stealey, back court man, fired the squad with his aggressive brand of ball, while Hal McManus, fledgling Falcon, demonstrated in- creasing skill in every game. Henry Johnson another fledgling, proved to be an excellent defensive ball player and probably will develop as a real threat on the front court. With a little more seasoning on his 6’6” frame, sophomore pivot man Larry Greene promises to be a real asset as an offensive-defensive man. Losing only one man from the first squad, the Falcons are likely to have a strong combination next year. 104 FROM COACH ESSIC . . “The team has shown great courage and determination and if things had gone our way we could have three or four more games in the win column. Several things hurt us throughout the season, but we cut our point-loss margin almost in half this year. The boys are continually improving and I expect that we haven’t yet reached our peak. Recruiting should help us next year and I hope to have a contender for the 1961-62 season. We’ve become stronger throughout the year. We try to give every team a respectable game.” First row: Dick Hawk, Jerry Little, Fred Shaw, Bobby Tucker. Third row: Coach Ferebee, Johnny Robertson, Troy Searcy, Dick Pine, Dave Holcomb, Hal Stealey, Bob Ellis, Mike DiMucci. Coach Ferebee looks back on another great year. BASEBALL Coach Joe Ferebee’s Falcons turned in one of the best records in the state last year, winning 16 games and losing six. Although Pfeiffer played only five games with North State Conference teams, a creditable 3-2 record was estab- lished against the type of competition the team will be playing this year. Strong men for the Falcons were Tom Jamieson and Brack Bailey, two Greensboro Daily News College All State selec- tions. Pitcher Jamieson, who is unbeaten in college competi- tion, had a 1960 record of six wins, no losses with an E.R.A. of .48. Tending the sluggers was OF Brack Bailey with six home runs and a strong .424 season Batting average. Pfeiffer’s record is doubly impressive when the statistics are carefully examined. The Falcons out-scored their oppo- nents by an average game margin of 9-5, while accumulating a team batting average of .336. 1 10 .A FROM COACH FEREBEE ... Ted slams another one. “The team shows strong potential in defen- sive play and overall speed; but the loss of Bailey and Searcy has taken the long ball hitter from our line-up. Therefore, our run production will be hurt. Our pitching should be good although Jamieson’s loss leaves us without a real ‘stopper.’ I know East Carolina and Catawba are the con- ference teams to beat, but I think we might be one of the better teams in the conference.” Gruber, Searcy, Bailey, Russell. 111 V Pine has it for the out. FENCING Dave Zerby, Dave Howell Mike Little, Coach Jackson, A1 Capehart, Dave Howell. The introduction of fencing to Pfeiffer brings a touch of the middle ages to the campus. Originally used for self-defense, fencing has developed into a modern sport requiring great skill, precision balance, and lightning reactions. Mr. Richard Jackson, Pfeiffer librarian, and Jim Hamilton, the more experienced member of the group, spent long hours working with Mike Little, Dave Howell, Dave Zerby, Tom Entenza, Dave Taylor, Rick Neal, and A1 Capehart striv- ing for perfection in a sport where excellence is par. A unique organization, the team is in actuality a club, formed with the purpose of presenting the ancient art of fencing to Pfeiffer students with the ultimate aim of developing fellowship and a bond among its members. The club adopted The Talons, representing the claws of the Pfeiffer Falcon, as its official name. Next year promises great things for Pfeiffer’s newest team, The Talons. TRACK Because of inadequate facilities and the neces- sary number of participants, Pfeiffer has ended varsity intercollegiate competition in track and field events. However, Coach Nicholas Lefko is optimistic about individual performances in fu- ture N.A.I.A. combined meets. The 1959-1960 season saw Pfeiffer suffer sev- eral defeats as they met teams representing the North State Conference. Although the Falcons were defeated in a triangular meet with Elon and Guilford they showed good potential at the District 26 N.A.I.A. Track and Field Meet. After several close matches Pfeiffer lost in the final events to a more balanced Guilford team, but stellar performances were turned in by Bruce Hayes and Bill Claypoole. usually produced high scoring in the discus, jave- lin and shot put. Bob Taylor and Bruce Hayes scored well for the Falcons in the broad jump and high jump. Ken Conners worked hard on his pole vault event and probably will develop more this year. Jack Wiglama and Buck Kin- dred gave strong supporting roles in the field events and Tony Philmon brought Pfeiffer 10 points in a surprise appearance in the Falcon lineup against Guilford. Coach Lefko hopes to form the nucleus of the ,61-,62 track team with the help of the Intra- mural Program this spring. Qualifying men will be offered the opportunity to participate in con- ference matches on the basis of their perform- ances in Intramurals. With a core of proven athletes, Lefko hopes to find a strong team next year. 1 16 Field events were the team’s strength. Pfeiffer Agonizing finish to a tough heat. John Stokes, consid- ered the most improved player on the squad, is a four year veteran of the nets and promises to have another good year. Barry Magee, New Jersey ace, has one of the most powerful serves in the conference and should cause his opposi- tion plenty of trouble while Bob Davis, another Yankee migrant, plays a fast, hard game, often completely bewildering his opponent. Jim Blake- ney, always a threat, rounds out an impressive array of Falcon tennis talent. 1 19 First row: Dwight Stokes, Don Gabriel, Larry Crumbley, Dick Gardner, Bob Love- lace. Second row: J. L. Williams, Joe Kiker, Charles Abel, George Conger, Bob Ascher, Bob Wade, Ed Kohler. WRESTLING The ancient sport of wrestling has become one of the most popular spectator sports at Pfeiffer College. Coach Wallace Martin’s matmen com- piled an unbeaten season, marred only by a tie with Southern Conference member, Davidson. Glenn Welborn and Red Gabriel lost no indi- vidual matches, leading the squad to an impres- sive record. As this season progresses, Pfeiffer has sched- uled several matches with Atlantic Coast Con- ference teams and has been willing to wrestle anybody, anywhere, any time. The Falcons showed well against tremendously strong teams from U.N.C. and N.C. State. Against Southern Conference teams, the Falcons made poorer showings but improved their overall performance with each month. Coach Martin, well pleased with individual perform- ances, hopes that this season’s experience will strengthen his squad. The top men of the 1960-61 season include Don Gabriel, returning letterman in the 147 lb. class; Bob Ascher, a powerful heavyweight; Charles Abel, the only unbeaten member of this years squad; and Captain George Conger, who wrestles in the 177 lb. division. 120 Don Gabriel George Conger Bob Ascher Bob Lovelace Lovelace defends against Gabriel Ed Kohler Charles Abel Larry Crumbley Dick Gardner Dwight Stokes I t Bill Richards, Steve Jones, Yates Neagle, Bobby Lisk, Coach Essie, George Skomsky, Tony Constantino, Bill White. Pfeiffer is rated a strong contender for the conference championship after a strong 1960 season. Returning lettermen Rob Lisk and George Skomsky will provide an almost unbeat- able one-two threat on the links. A strong under- classmen contingent promises to give valuable support in the remaining positions on the team. The pro- gram has become a total student effort in that it is student organized and student directed. Fast action on the football field. The primary function of Intramural Activities is to promote an extensive program of voluntary competitive and recreational activities for the entire student body. To meet this requirement the W.A.A. and P.E. Major’s Club offer a variety of sports that include football, basketball, volley- ball, softball, and such individual sports as ten- nis, ping-pong, track, and golf. The program is open to both students and faculty, and Intra- mural Activities are among the most popular spectator events on campus. Regular and judicious participation in these activities permits the individual to acquire and maintain muscular strength, coordination, and endurance; to make new and lasting friendships; and, most important, to have fun. 1 24 Tie breaking shot. I I Working with the 1961 Chimes has been an experience that will endure long after most of life at Pfeiffer College has slipped from my mem- ory. There was much to learn: contracts to be signed; decisions to be made on each detail; questions to be answered; and the deadline to be met in order that the delivery date might not be postponed. The Chimes became an integral part of my life for a short while. This page has been set aside in acknowledgment of the people with whom I worked, and without whose assistance this yearbook would not have been possible. With deep appreciation I commend the yearbook staff for submitting both the time and the talent to the objective of a better Chimes in 1961. A special note of gratitude is due A1 Capehart and Rick Neal. A1 and his business staff raised the largest amount of advertising revenue in recent years, making possible the biggest yearbook ever produced here. Rick Neal, spent many long hours bringing to the ’61 yearbook what we believe to be one of the best layouts in Chimes history. My thanks to Mrs. Gerry Moore for her willingness to help in any way that was needed. And, I would like to thank Dr. Leidig. His encouragement and under- standing, efficiency and competence have provided the impetus which was essential to the realization of the Pfeiffer College Chimes. Of primary concern to each yearbook editor is the photography. This year we were fortunate to have Mr. Paul Hepler of Rural Hall to do the greater portion of the informal photography. This he did at both personal inconvenience and financial sacrifice. Louis Allen was gen- erous in allowing us to use many of his pictures as well as doing a con- siderable amount of printing and enlarging forms. Other generous donors of photographs were Mr. William Reasonover, Dr. Lloyd G. Lowder, and The Pfeiffer News, under the editorship of Tom Jones. The financial situation was greatly enhanced by the assistance and advice of Vice President Walter I. Gibson. Mrs. Mary McQuinn was gracious in granting us the use of the parlor of Merner Dormitory, often at times not altogether convenient to her. To the representative from Delmar Printing Company we owe a note of gratitude. Mr. Frank Fleming worked with us carefully and devotedly. Most of all, a humble thanks to Pfeiffer College. As my four years here reach a close, I am increasingly aware of my indebtedness to this institution. 199 200 Congratulations B. B. GRILL Located At Intersection At Highway 49 and 52 Richfield, N. C.
