OBERLIN HOME AND SCHOOL — 1885 HISTORY EVENTY-FIVE years ago, in a remote section near Lenoir, a missionary-minded woman from Connecticut joined with local citizens to establish a small elemen- tary school for mountain children. What began in an eleven-room frame build- ing as Miss Emily Prudden's Oberlin Home and School is today a five million dollar educational plant at Misenheimer. From its inception Pfeiffer College has rendered outstanding service to North Carolina and to Methodism. Today over seven hundred students, representing many faiths from across the nation and the world, com- prise the student body. The years since 1885 have seen the institution in a continuous expansion of its aca- demic scope—from grade school to high school, from junior college to senior college status. During the current year the senior college received recognition by the accrediting agencies of the region, the nation, and the church—a fitting salute on the occasion of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of the institution. We are proud of our re- markable administrative leadership, of an outstanding faculty, of a spirited student body, of the imposing four hundred acre campus. Phenomenal growth has become a part of the vocabulary of every Pfeifferite, but the true distinction which commands our loyalty is not growth, but constancy. An abiding devotion to Christian education, a belief in the worth of the individual, a dedication to service in the community and the world—these are the true marks of Pfeiffer College: For Chapel Spire and Spirit . . . Alma Mater, All Hail!
