In this expansion many people play an important role. Perhaps the most important is played by those who set high goals and objectives—or the dreams'' for tomorrow. Pfeiffer has been fortunate to have had one such per- son who not only set the high standards of a dream for the future but also worked diligently in many phases to see that dream become a reality. His contribution was a plan for an advanced science department with necessary equipment and space for serious research and investigation. He also planned a science building which would not only meet the needs of today but would also meet the needs of tomorrow, with equipment which the student could use to enable himself to live a better life in an age of scientific in- vestigation, atomic power, and space curiosity. Many long hours were spent studying the needs of the college, plans for architecture, equipment needs, and financial expectations. Once the building was complete, more time was needed to search for the right profes- sional people to teach in the science department so that the full dream could be recognized. Today, we have our science building and an ex- panded science program. Because of our deep apprecia- tion for his self-sacrifice and hard work and because of our understanding the importance of his dream and its realization, we dedicate the 1959 Chimes to Dr. Jethro 0. Manly. German Volkswagen brings northern foreigners to the sunny south. — NEW FACES — Money again? Getting into easy after all!! college isn't so New faculty members, new stu- dents, new school year. FAMILIAR FACES Bill ond friends gather in front of Rowe and ponder what the new college year holds. Meanwhile back at the Rec— folks are renewing old times. Anybody have a dime? You can tell that the new students are here! Working up an appetite Hum . . m, satisfying??? BJ I 4 When the coffee is cold and the eyes and mind are tired, it is time for a break . . And so the boys thumb a ride to Salisbury for a show . . . While others go to the B B for eats. 15 Give me a coke and a pack of nabs! See you tonight! Johnnie's lost in a world of creativity. O K , I'm in for one more hand. The less you know, the more you study! The more you study, the more you forget. So . . . why study? V I t Christmas trees, mistletoe, and swinging music create a holiday mood at the Christmas dance. Time out for the pause that re- freshes—rest and food. Dancing, music, and you in a world far away. Up and in. Ready. Another save for the Panthers. 19 Students co-operate with the drama and religion departments to present a living nativity on front campus. For the third consecutive year Pfeiffer takes top honors for its float in the out-of-town division of the Charlotte Carrousel Parade. Snow falls silently outside on a Christmas chimney as . . . Santa Claus entertains his children inside. Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow, can stop the Pfeiffer Express! Curly-tail is dressed for winter. Walking in a winter wonderland. J. LEM STOKES, 11... Leader of Pfeiffer's transition from the ranks of junior college to that of a senior four-year liberal arts college is Dr. J. Lem Stokes, II, born in Korea, the son of a Methodist missionary, educated at Asbury, Duke, and Yale, who assumed the presidency of the college in July, 1953. In May, 1954, the Board of Trustees authorized the advance to the rank of full senior college and instructed President Stokes to proceed in all possible haste in that direction. Under his direction, the college has undertaken a three-fold program of growth: development of a broad liberal arts program of academic excel- lence which saw its first class of fifty-eight students receive the bachelor's degree in June, 1957; a two-million-dollar physical expansion program com- pleted with an additional enlargement plan of $800,000 almost ready to start; and the building of a faculty which will compare favorably with the great liberal arts colleges of the nation. Never dismayed or discouraged, convinced that ways can and must be found, armed with faith and prayer, President Stokes has begun the task of developing a faculty, a program for expansion of physical facilities, and a plan to place the college on a sound financial basis. Thus, Pfeiffer's rapid development has not resulted from ample funds; rather, it has resulted from a progressive administrator who has placed quality along with service to the church first and has fought successfully against what seemed to be insur- mountable odds to secure the resources which have been necessary to meet the needs. Money matters and over-all financial concerns are under the direction of Vice-president Walter I. Gibson. The three deans—Dr. Paul Wheeler, Miss Mary Bethea, and Dr. Lloyd Lowder—supervise the total life of the student by seeking to help each in- dividual with academic achievements, per- sonal problems, and dormitory life on the col- lege campus. Mr. Kenneth Holshouser and Dr. Donald Douglass are responsible for the admittance and placement of the students coming to Pfeiffer, for Mr. Holshouser processes the ap- plications for admission, and Dr. Douglass is in charge of the testing program. As Director of Teacher Placement, Dr. Cameron West is responsible for securing po- sitions for graduates who wish to become established in the field of education, either on the elementary or secondary level. Mr. Nick Lefko, Assistant to the President, is a Jack- of-all-trades as he performs very diverse duties necessary to the function of the college. Dr. Nelson Moore and Mr. Bill Reasonover perform tasks which are interdependent in that Dr. Moore is responsible for attracting new students, while Mr. Reasonover, in one phase of his work, directs attempts to bring financial assistance into the school for those students who need aid to attend. Director of Religious Life Rev. James Clemmer seeks to stimulate interest in the cultivation of the religious life and outlook of the student. Jt YK At the beginning of the year Editor Whit Warren and Assistant Editor Phil Shepard hid themselves in a closet in the main building night after night working out the plans for the 1959 Chimes. Then Whit rushed about campus, arranging for pictures to be made, in- structing his staff in their duties, constantly pressed for time. Phil worked closely with him, tying up loose ends. The photographer from Smith's Studio constantly asked people to smile. And Student Photographer Howard Powell, followed and assisted by Kathy Langs- ton, froze for the sake of annual pictures when he spent one day outside in a four-inch snowfall. Fresh pictures poured into the science building where the staff worked; and Rita Shumaker, aided by Stan Thompson, Bill Latham, Barbara Dodson, Gerry Hamilton, Johnny Stokes and Milton Barden concentrated on copy and captions. Sports Editor Phil Stone scooped in sports copy, much of it first hand. Judy Coe, Janice Small and Tommy Runge, made them- selves invaluable checking details. Charles Reese drove constantly between Misenheimer and Charlotte, taking negatives to Delmar and B H. Barbara Warren, Bar- bara and Marjorie Smith typed hour after hour after hour the numerous copy pages which go into the making of an annual. Sylvia Kiser, Business Manager, worked closely with a staff composed of Jerry Gardner, Gloria Boring, Myron Goebelbecker, and Bobby Westmoreland—watching for every chance to sell an extra ad. Business Manager 97 PFEIFFER PLAYMAKERS V I, I' r Madam Arcati explains all in the Pfeiffer playmakers production of Blithe Spirit. Every year the students at Pfeiffer have presented to them by the play- makers several dramatic productions. The casts of these plays are chosen by audition, and the students earn points for their participation in any way in the dramas. With the accumulation of a specific number of points, a student be- comes eligible for membership in the national drama fraternity. This year's Blithe Spirit was presented in the fall and was a big success! It becomes necessary to fight spirits with spirits as spooks prove too much for Madam Arcati. The most outstanding player by far for the frosh was big Miles McWilliams, who ended the season with a 17.5 scoring average per game. Miles got plenty of help from other very out- standing freshmen: Bill Claypoole, Hal Stealey, Buck Kindred, Sid Jones, Rip Collins, Thurston Frye, and Vince Hoch. The J. V. team offered a chance to improve the play and ability of the stars of tomorrow —and improve they did! Several of the team members made so much improvement that some of them even worked into the starting lineup of the varsity. JUNIOR VARSITY Row 1: Ron Rayle, Homer Brawley, Rick Hodges, Woody Long. Coached by Mr. Joe Ferebee and led by the tremendous pitching of Tommy Jamieson and Roger Williams, the Panthers turned in a 16-1-1 record—the best anywhere. A highlight of the season came when Roger Williams pitched a no-hitter. Then Pfeiffer's credit was boosted by Tommy Jamieson's being named All-State. Aces on the diamond as well as strong power hitters were Bob Bost, Red Russell, Jimmy Coggins, Larry Graham, Johnny Robertson, Jerry Bryson, Tom- my Eaton, Brack Bailey, and Jim Irby. The loss of many regulars from the 1957-58 squad will surely be felt, but with several promising prospects and the returning veterans of last year another winning season should be in the making this year. TENNIS Coach Nick Lefko and Captain Doug Archer Led by Lloyd Hunsucker, Bob Stoker, Don Stokes, Delmas Petrea, Doug Archer, Gene Thompson, John- ny Stokes, and Don Michelle, the tennis team, coached by Mr. N. E. Lefko, was most successful last spring. Phil Stone and Alton Taylor made favorable impressions as reserve netmen. The team made a most impressive record for the season by winning in almost every contest. The two losses that spoiled the perfect record came at the hands of the team from Wake Forest. Unfortunately Hunsucker, Petrea, Thompson, and Michelle graduated, leaving big gaps in the line- up to be filled before spring arrives. But those spaces will be filled, and Pfeiffer should have another win- ning team. Set point!! 147 Mickey Dunham, Doug Archer, Jones Al- mond, Charles Pickard, Johnny Stokes. SOCCER In the second year for soccer at Pfeiffer, an ever-increasing following was gathered from the student body. The many beautiful fall afternoons were filled with shouts and yells as the Panthers met some of the best teams in the South. The games with Duke, Carolina, and Davidson saw the Panthers fight- ing it out toe to toe as they met the superior teams with much more experience. With only five returning lettermen—Coy Plott, Wayne Smith, Don Tweed, Glenn Wellborn, and Milt Barden—the team got off to a rather slow start but rapidly picked up strength to smack Belmont Abbey full force 9-1 on the home field. C. State, and Cherry Point Marines. Coach Wallace Martin worked with the team for the fourth year. The line-up for this season was composed of veterans Ken Cuthbertson, Coy Plott, Bill Barker, Captain Glenn Wellborn, and Gene Whitesides. New men to the kingdom of the mat were Don Gabriel, Ken Anderson, Keith Young, Thad Bryson, and Hal Furr. In past years, wrestling has gained in popularity more than any other sport at Pfeiffer. Fans always enjoy watching the skill and physical strenath shown on the mats. WRESTLING Top Row: Coach Martin, Glenn Wellborn, Gene Whitesides, Keith Young, Thad Bryson, Hal Furr. In addition to his basketball duties, Mr. Don Miller coached the golf team again this year. Pfeiffer had several top notch golfers who inhabited the home links at Badin Country Club. The Panther golfers spelled trouble for all opponents they met; their six wins and two ties attest the fact. Catawba was beaten twice; High Point, East Carolina, Belmont Abbey and Guilford were each beaten once. East Carolina and High Point racked up one tie each. GOLF It takes a good smooth swing. The track events are composed of the running and dash races, whereas the field events consist of discus throwing, shot- putting, javelin throwing, broad and high jump- ing, and pole vaulting. The races are the 60 yard dash, the 100 yard dash, 220 meter, 440 meter, 880 meter, half mile, 1 mile run, and 1 mile relay. Lettermen reporting for action again this year were Bobby Taylor, John Kirkpatrick, Al Capehart, Ken Marlowe, and Ronnie Rayle. Jimmy Went- worth, Thurston Frye, Buddy Lake, Tom Hudgins, Leon Smith, and Bill Claypoole added their support to the team. Gunning for a record. Left to right: Bill Scarborough, Thad Bryson, Wayne Smith, Don White, Coach At Last! George Melton. ------------------------------ CROSS Headed by Coach George Melton, the cross country harriers made simultaneous appearances with their travel companions, the soccer team, as they met rough competition from the smaller colleges that specialize in producing superior contestants for the minor sports. The road-running harriers met teams from Wake Forest, High Point, Lynchburg, Roanoke, Catawba, and Pembroke. Being greatly handicapped by having only two returning lettermen, Don White and Phil Clark, the team gathered depth and power through Bruce Hayes, Reggie Chance, Fred Haak, Thad Bryson, Bill Scar- borough, and Phil Stone. Faith in the future, boldness of action, and dedication to the service of the church, com- munity, and students are terms often used to describe Pfeiffer College, North Carolina's newest senior liberal arts college and the largest educational institution supported by Methodist women. Although new in one respect, Pfeiffer, in the role of the traditional liberal arts college, has evolved a program which has as its goal the imparting to its students of those qualities re- quired to lead a well-rounded life in service to fellow man, whether it be through full-time serv- ice in the church or through broad avenues of Christian commitment in every vocation, trade, and profession. To accomplish its goal, the College developed a challenging plan in each of the following areas: Academic training of the highest order; a program favorable to the development in each student of an intelligent, yet warm, Christian faith; proficiency in the use of the written and spoken word; the strengthening in each student of the foundations needed for sound physical and mental health, the opportunities for growth in the cultural and social graces. Expansion of physical facilities has seen al- most two million dollars expended since 1953 Centered around a core of eight buildings valued at over three million dollars—a gift from the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pfeiffer of New York City—the expansion program has seen the erec- tion of three new handsome men's residence halls, an imposing $750,000 science building, faculty and student apartment homes, thirty- two new faculty homes, and modernization of many existing buildings. Financing of this program came from money from three sources: self-liquidating loans from the Federal Housing and Home Finance Agency, a challenge grant of $750,000 from the Pfeiffer Foundation, and a response on the part of nearby residents of Stanly county, Methodist women and their friends to the challenge grant. It is of historical importance to note the in- terest of the Pfeiffer family in the College. Through her interest in the Woman's Home Missionary Society of The Methodist Church Mrs. Henry Pfeiffer in 1934 visited the school, then known as Mitchell Junior College. This visit resulted in her and her husband becoming dedicated patrons of the school. In 1935 the name of the school was changed to Pfeiffer College in appreciation of the gift of five build- ings to the College that year by Mr. and Mrs. Pfeiffer, valued at three million dollars. The patronage of Mr. and Mrs. Pfeiffer, whose philanthropic interests were to be found around the world, continued throughout their lifetime and spread to other members of the Pfeiffer family. The Henry Pfeiffer Chapel, the dominating building on the campus, was erected 156 PAST AND PRESENT in 1942 by Mrs. Pfeiffer as a memorial to her husband. Following her death in 1947, the Mitchell Gymnasium and three other structures were erected from the residue of her estate as directed by the Woman's Division of Christian Service of The Methodist Church. In 1954 funds from the estate of the late G. A. Pfeiffer made possible the expansion of The Delight and Gar- field Merner Library, two dormitories, the chapel organ enlargement and other additions. The 1950's found Pfeiffer in a period of tran- sition. The College was successful in preserving many of the fine attributes of the smaller school —a warm, friendly campus; an excellent rapport between students and faculty with all of its many advantages; and an atmosphere friendly to Chris- tian thought and action. The latter tradition is kept strong by the seventeen denominations rep- resented in the student body, in required weekly chapel and assembly programs, and in a cur- riculum requirement which calls for each student to complete nine hours in the Department of Religion and Philosophy before graduation. In keeping with Pfeiffer's heritage as a church-related college, a churchmanship pro- gram designed to train laymen for places of leadership in the local church was developed. This and the total campus Christian Life pro- gram is strengthened by seven ordained minist- ers and two Methodist deaconesses on the facul- ty. Fruitfulness of this effort is evidenced by the fact that almost one-fifth of the June, 1958, graduating class are entering some phase of full- time Christian service while others have assumed positions of lay leadership in their local church. President Stokes, in commenting on the fu- ture of the College, said: When we review our history including the founding of the school as a 'home institute' near Lenoir, North Carolina, in 1885, its move to Misenheimer in 1910, its accreditation as a high school in 1914, the addi- tion of work on the junior college level in 1928, its accreditation as a junior college in 1934 by the State Department of Education, and its movement to the ranks of a senior college in 1954, one is ever aware of the support given the College by Methodist women and their friends. We have a plan for the future rooted in the conviction that the church-related liberal arts college has a significant contribution to make to our Christian-democratic way of life. This calls for a five-million-dollar expansion to provide a much needed student union building, a class- room building, expanded library facilities, ath- letic fields, and other related facilities. The plan calls for an expansion of our scholarship aid program, lifting of faculty salary scale, and enlargement of the endowment. We at Pfeiffer believe we cannot adequately train young men and women to meet the chal- lenges of today's world unless we have the facili- ties, staff, and faculty of the highest standards. Such is our goal. 157 View of campus in 1934 Present view of campus A «y Early view of Pfeiffer auditorium Goode Hall before renovation. £ ' ’ ?«• t S5££figfoj V; . k!.L K or. ■ T-:,. .JM ■ Vi Sim ■K SB Winter scene of President's home in 1938 Administration Building shortly after being remodeled. One involves the initial plan and purpose of the annual. The editor may either follow ideas accepted in the past, or he may endeavor to branch out with certain changes in stereotyped procedures—in which case the future holds only uncertainty. The 1959 Chimes has been published with a very definite goal in mind. This goal was determined from the very beginning— to show your life as a college student as you actually lived it and to show it in such a manner that you will wish to remember it the same way. The attempt to reach this goal has not been easy, but our work will be compensated for if we can feel that our efforts are acceptable by you as students and faculty. I could never have seen this annual to the publisher without the com- bined and co-ordinated efforts of each and every member of this year's staff, whose loyalty and endurance will never be surpassed. People like Howard Powell and Kathy Langston, who diligently planned and photographed pic- tures, in spite of a four-inch snowfall, rain, and canceled appointments. Staff members like Mary Franklin Crouse, Carolyn McLean, Betty Moses, Kaye Blakely, and Rose Crouse, who did an excellent job on the classes. To an outstanding group headed by Rita Shumaker, I offer my thanks for the history recorded in words by Barbara Dodson, Bill Latham, John Stokes, Tommy Jamieson, and Milt Barden. To the business staff I give not only my thanks but mv heartfelt sympathy for the sad stories that were endured while selling the ads which kept us from applying for a government loan. Sylvia Kiser, Gloria Boring, Jerry Gardner, Myron Goebelbecker, and Bobby Westmoreland—your aggressive selling will always be appreciated. Phil Stone and Tommy Jamieson I can never thank enough for the special treat- ment given to the sports section. Although most of the annual consists of photographs, the special art features are a glowing symbol of the brilliance of Vida Sumner, Sammie Holshouser, and Dan Aderhold. To Barbara and Marjorie Smith, Patty Gregg, and Judy Coe—thanks for the many hours at the typewriters; without you this annual would never have reached the pub- lisher. And to Miss Margaret Stuckey, our advisor, whose unselfish assist- ance, calm reassurance, and inspiration will never be forgotten. For the excellent write-up in the development section I offer my ap- preciation to Mr. William Reasonover. Special thanks also to the science de- partment for the use of the lab which served as this year's staff room. I could not complete this acknowledgment without mentioning Chuck Reese, Assistant Editor Phil Shepard, and my wife Barbara, who not only worked like Trojans but continually gave me advice and encouragement— without which I would never have made it. To all of these and many more, I give my sincerest thanks and pay my own tribute to the outstanding staff of the 1959 Chimes. 168 Best Wishes to PFEIFFER COLLEGE We are happy to have served the faculty, staff and student body for 50 years and we extend to you a cordial invitation to stop by to see us.
