He towers over the desk, one hand in his pocket, jingling his keys with the other, waiting for her to complete a telephone call. The girl looks up at him. Dr. Wheeler isn ' t in right now; can I help you? I have an appointment at 2:00. Well, I ' m sure he ' ll be back in a few minutes. Won ' t you have a seat? The boy sits down to wait. I wonder what he wants to see me about? I must not have done very well on the English exam. About this time the Dean comes in. Oh, here you are. I want to have a serious talk with you. He came, he worked, he accomplished. Within five years Pfeiffer College has made more progress than any college in the country. MR. KENNETH D. HOLSHOUSER Dean of Students; Registrar; Director of Admissions MISS MARY E. BETHEA Dean of Women In the hall a group of students are congre- gated. Among them are two new students. They are being directed to Dr. Moore, who, on one of his rounds, found them and encouraged them to come to Pfeiffer. At the door of his office, they meet Dr. Moore ' s beaming face. Welcome to Pfeiffer! We hope you ' re going to enjoy your stay here — you ' ll find most of the information you need in the hand- book; but by the way of introduction, a few of the people you will become acquainted with are Mr. Holshouser, the Dean of Men, and Miss Bethea, the Dean of Women. They will handle all dormi- tory problems and week-end leaves . . . You will find the library is located behind the administra- tive building where Mr. Caskey will be glad to help you become acquainted with the arrange- ment. Here at Pfeiffer, we stress religious activities. I hope each of you will join at least one of the religious organizations. That ' s Mr. Clemmer ' s de- partment. At that point a man comes in to give Dr. Moore a paper. They exchange a few words and the man goes out again. Who was he, and what does he do? Oh, that ' s Mr. Lefko. He does everything. 24
