THE NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY-EIGHT CHIMES PFEIFFER COLLEGE CAROLYN EVANS LJitor JAMES DREW (OuSineAS ff anaper MISENHEIMER, NORTH CAROLINA DEDICATED TO THE PEOPLE OF STANLY COUNTY DEDICATION In the life of a rapidly growing- educational institution such as Pfeiffer College, it is well to pause and think of those unsung persons who support the progress of this school with their time, their talents, their financial resources, and their prayers. Pfeiffer College is deeply indebted to those persons who have carried her dreams in their hearts. It is with sincerity that we express our deep appreciation to the people of Stanly County to whom we dedicate this, The CHIMES of 1958. FOREWORD The year unfolds . . . classes . . . dances . . . study until the wee hours . . . quiet moments in the chapel . . . gab sessions with the gang 1 . These are just a few of the moments that we will be remembering in the years to come. Between the covers of this book, we have attempted to picture life as it is here at Pfeiffer . . . the highlights on this year ' s calendar along with those of rather insignificant events that became important because of the friends with whom we shared them. May you always cherish these moments we ' ve captured as MOMENTS TO REMEMBER . . . ( XxXj-Yc- ' . - ' i {it ■M 2 Em „ .. ffimiSM tt- Mr ' m viJ •■j MWBpe - ' V ' ' ■1958 THE CHIMES VOL. Saturday night : There are a few stars, some, not many. A light burns furiously as a student reads. A clock keeps time for another sleeping in his own world. Across the feathered lawn the watchman stands beneath an oak to catch his breath. The crickets make some noise; the trees are still; the lights are gone from almost everywhere. But in the gym, music crowds the time away. Inside there are no crick- ets, no watchman, no oak tree, no sleep except the nodding of a few weary ones. There are lights, dim. Somewhere someone looks in the window and listens, and wishes. It only lasts for a few hours. At twelve the Cinderellas fade; Prince Charmings turn again to void when morning comes. Pink and yellow. Red and green. A Saturday spectrum that hides reality. Sunday morning : there are a few clouds ; it drizzles rain, not much, just a little. How many pages? . . . Within five years Pfeiffer College has made more progress than any college in the country. There has been an increase in enrollment, faculty, buildings ; and many impi-ovements have been made. There are many who deserve recognition for this merit of achievement, but for every detailed opera- tion, there is a leader. The credit for this goes to — our own Dr. J. Lem Stokes. 2? He towers over the desk, one hand in his pocket, jingling his keys with the other, waiting for her to complete a telephone call. The girl looks up at him. Dr. Wheeler isn ' t in right now; can I help you? I have an appointment at 2:00. Well, I ' m sure he ' ll be back in a few minutes. Won ' t you have a seat? The boy sits down to wait. I wonder what he wants to see me about? I must not have done very well on the English exam. About this time the Dean comes in. Oh, here you are. I want to have a serious talk with you. Come in my office. . . . By the way, did I ever tell you the joke about . . .? The door closes, the girl at the desk smiles. MR. WALTER I. GIBSON, SR. Vice-President DR. PAUL M. WHEELER Academic Dean MR. KENNETH D. HOLSHOUSER Dean of Students; Registrar; Director of Admissions MISS MARY E. BETHEA Dean of Women In the hall a group of students are congre- gated. Among them are two new students. They are being directed to Dr. Moore, who, on one of his rounds, found them and encouraged them to come to Pfeiffer. At the door of his office, they meet Dr. Moore ' s beaming face. Welcome to Pfeiffer! We hope you ' re going to enjoy your stay here — you ' ll find most of the information you need in the hand- book; but by the way of introduction, a few of the people you will become acquainted with are Mr. Holshouser, the Dean of Men, and Miss Bethea, the Dean of Women. They will handle all dormi- tory problems and week-end leaves . . . You will find the library is located behind the administra- tive building where Mr. Caskey will be glad to help you become acquainted with the arrange- ment. Here at Pfeiffer, we stress religious activities. I hope each of you will join at least one of the religious organizations. That ' s Mr. Clemmer ' s de- partment. At that point a man comes in to give Dr. Moore a paper. They exchange a few words and the man goes out again. Who was he, and what does he do? Oh, that ' s Mr. Lefko. He does everything. 24 In another part of the building, a conversation is overheard . . . Get me the Acme Paper Company on the phone. Yes, sir. ... A low rumble of voices . . . Your call is ready, sir. Hello, Acme Paper Company? This is Gibson, Pfeiffer College. The 500 reams of mimeograph paper we ordered last month have not come yet. They were supposed to be here yesterday? . . . What? . . . Well, I thought there might have been a delay in your office, but it might very well have been delayed in transit. We need it right away. Thank you for your trouble. MR. NICHOLAS E. LEFKO Assistant to the President DR. CAMERON P. WEST Director of Teacher Placement DR. DONALD D. DOUGLASS Director of Placement DR. G. NELSON MOORE Director of Public Relations and of Alumni Affairs MR. JEFFERSON D. CASKEY Librarian REV. JAMES A. CLEMMER Director of Religious Life MR. CHARLES MISENHEIMER Head of the Maintenance Department Elsewhere another person speaks. Of course, you will meet most of the faculty from time to time. If you are planning to become a teacher, you will meet Dr. West, the head of teacher placement. If you are going into some other type of work, Dr. Douglass will assist you. . . . The phone rings . . . Excuse me. . . . Hello . . . just a minute. . . . My secretary will tell you where to find your dormitories. Be sure to call on me if I can help you in any way. The students stand up, smile, and the boy extends his hand. Thank you, sir. I ' m sure we ' re going to like it here. Those who administer . . . you have just met them. Those who are friends to the student, those who get things done, those who direct, those who keep us on the right track, and those who guide ... The ADMINISTRATION. 26 Sfflr H .7 :2 ■FACULTY Faculty Gazing at the rows of faces which line the faculty sec- tion of the annual, the senior reminisces of classroom ex- periences of the years which have flown so quickly past. Memories . . . Dr. Schreyer ' s An individual must be guided by an experience-centered approach to religion. . . . Mr. Martin ' s continuous questioning, Do What? ... I swear by the U. S. News and World Report, resorts Mr. Hollis in his political science courses. Dr. Wassen ' s Dis ez eit, Brouther! resounds down the hall ... A smile passes over the face of the senior whose thoughts linger upon the tall, gaunt personage of Dr. Wheeler as he says, Did I ever tell you the joke about . . . Bon jour, mademoiselle and monseiur . . . get out a fourth of a sheet of paper, please . . . Miss Shaffer ' s voice drifts lazily through the senior ' s mind. Dr. Genes Manly ' s Science text books are not written to be scholarly works. They are written to make money, and they don ' t make much on them. . . . If all of our statesmen were like Thomas Jefferson, this country would be . . . explains Dr. Cotton. And on the fleeting memory goes until, Let ' s get down to the meat of the problem, Miss Floyd is heard to say. Dr. Russell ' s History of the Methodist Church class comes out with quote . . . unquote . . . quote . . . unquote. Miss Stuckey ' s short assignment is recalled. For your assign- ment read The Canterbury Tales. Miss Fink ' s well-re- membered promise, They call me a crank, but a crank makes wheels turn. That is what I intend to do in this class. . . . The senior smiles for he remembers that she did just that! College life past . . . but memories that will linger for- ever fill the senior ' s mind with pictures of his well-loved faculty. DR. Yes — to usher at plays and concerts and to welcome visitors and to make them feel at home. Since Pfeiffer is now a four year college, we have, for the first time, marshals. They are elected at the end of their Junior year to marshal at commencement exercises, and then to serve their following Senior year. The Pfeiffer News, edited by Jim Griffith and Linda Briggs, has shown tremendous progress since last year. Under its new organizational set-up, the paper has been expanded to include the talents and abilities of a large number of students. Because of this organiza- tion we have been receiving two publications every month. This year ' s staff and advisor certainly de- serve an untold amount of praise for the manner in which it has carried such a tremendous amount of responsibility. . . . One person, a senior, leaves with a deeper understanding of the debt that Pfeiffer College owes to the Pfeiffer News for its progress — progress made possible by the effort and under the leadership of the staff of 1957-58. Someone down the hall begins. Tra . . . la . . . la do . . . re . . . me . . . do . . . . . . Does Pfeiffer offer an extensive pro- gram in music? Why, sure ! Pfeiffer has a Male Chorus which has recorded for the Voice of America. Yes, Jim, it surely is fun to be a member too, resorts the tall boy on the right. We meet twice a week to practice. I can just hear Mr. Draper now, saying . . . ' Let ' s go, men. ' Hey, don ' t forget the mixed chorus ! We meet twice a week too. We always have a tour in the spring when we sing for high schools and churches. They usually feed us when we go ! Boy, that ' s some fun. A girl in the front of the room enthusiastically joins in, We have a Women ' s Chorus. Miss Burch is teaching us some wonderful arrangements. Be- side this, Pfeiffer has a quartet, a combo, and a band. Don ' t forget the Charlotteens ! ... I heard the Combo practicing the other day. RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS In our tour of campus organizations, the senior addresses the freshman, one of the most im- portant groups to be considered is the Christian Life Council. Composed of representatives of faculty and student body, the Council serves as the steering committee for campus-wide religious activities. Just what does the Council do specifically? Well, the Council is responsible for formulating policies regarding the religious program. The Council coordinates all religious activities, and directs all inter-denominational, non-denominational and inter-faith activities. Who are members of this Council ? How are they elected ? The Christian Life Council includes the Director of Religious Life, two faculty representatives appointed by the administration, a pre sident and vice-president elected by the student body, and presi- dents, sponsors, and representatives of each denominational group. The secretary reads the purpose of the organization aloud. . . . Designed for those students who are preparing for full- time service in the Church in the area of Christian Education, the Christian Educa- tion Fellowship provides opportunities for worship, study, and companionship among students committed to this field of en- deavor. . . . What are some good sermon topics? . . . Should you preach from an outline? . . . What are some ways that you can learn to counsel? These and many other questions are debated and discussed at the weekly meetings which are held by the Pre-Ministerial Fellowship. These meetings, which provide opportunities for instruction, inspiration, fellowship, and service, are held for the purpose of promot- ing discussion and general interest in the pastoral ministry of the Church for those who are preparing for their life-role in the Christian ministry. Well, first of all, it is an organization for students who are interested in home missions, foreign missions, and social work. We meet once a month to study the world-wide mission of the church and the qualifications necessary for missionary service. . . . Well, I ' m not sure about what I want to be yet, so I don ' t guess I had better join. . . . Oh, but you should ! Coach Don Miller, after being elevated to the head coaching job this year, greeted on the 6th of Octo- ber some sixteen boys, including six returning letter- men — Delmas Petrea, Bill Tyson, Larry Kiser, Keith Young, Ed Woodhouse, and Richard Biddy. Then the addition of several promising prospects from last year ' s Freshman team — Bobby Freeman, Larry Jordan, Harold Tackett, and Joe Arbo — and the eligibility of transfer guard Phil Stone allowed Coach Miller to find the right combination for this year ' s team. 124 SCHEDULE Nov. 22 Atlantic Christian Nov. 25 East Carolina Dec. 2 Catawba Dec. 4 Lenoir Rliyne Dec. 7 Elon Dec. 9 Newberry Dec. 12 Appalachian Dec. 14 Elon Dec. 17 Hitfh Point Jan. 6 Presbyterian Jan. 8 East Carolina Jan. !) Following a rousing send-off from the whole student body, the Panthers jour- neyed to Wilson, N. C, to meet the tough Bulldogs of Atlantic Christian. For Coach Don Miller ' s charges it was an impressive debut as they topped the Bulldogs on an after-the-whistle shot by Phil Stone, who along with Delmas Petrea and Richard Biddy, was nothing less than spectacular. Three nights later Pfeiffer made the long trip to Greenville, N. C, to meet the mighty Pirates at E. C. C. However, the Panthers were not so successful as they ran into a red hot quintet from E. C. C. Led by sharp- shooting Jessel Curry, the Pirates ran rough- shod over the Panthers in the last half of the contest. Mr. Rodney Don Miller Coach Pfeiffer ahead — 72-70 . . . Time for jubilation for the boys on the bench and Coach Miller. 1 1 Playing their first game before the homefolks, the Panthers came through to conquer their arch rival Catawba in convincing fashion with a 94-91 score. Lenoir Rhyne came next to Pfeiffer, but the ever strong Bears were too much for the Panthers. Pfeiffer came back home on December 7th and 9th to thrash Elon and Newberry in succession. However, old Lady Bad Luck made her appear- ance and Pfeiffer played its next three games without the services of two of their leading play- ers, Phil Stone and Richard Biddy. Although the Panthers were defeated in These three — Appala- chian, Elon, and High Point — none can deny the fact that a tremendous effort was given by each of the players. Returning home from Christmas holidays, the Panthers continued their losing streak at Clinton. S. C, when a tough team from Presbyterian handed them their sixth loss. Old Lady Luck struck again in the East Caro- lina College game as the Panthers were right in the thick of the battle until ace rebounder and scorer, Richard Biddy, injured his ankle with 10 minutes left to play. After this, however, the Pirates pulled away slowly to win 84-71. Our luckless Panthers have since faced High Point, Guilford, Wofford, and Appalachian only to come out on the short end. With a few good breaks and a little luck here and there each of these losses could have easily gone our way. As this annual goes to press, the record of the Panthers might not be too impressive ; but with ten games remaining on the schedule, our possi- bilities for a good season are still bright. •.•.■•■■: ' f:;. j- ;.v. -■• v ■. GET THAT BALL AND GO! ' 129 BASEBALL Baseball at Pfeiffer has been the most successful at winning- of all the major sports on campus. Under the crafty and able tutelage of Coach Joe Ferebee, last year ' s team compiled the best won-lost record in the state in winning fifteen — losing only four — two of these defeats being by one run. The success of our baseballers was attributed to a well rounded infield consisting of Jimmy Irby, Larry Graham, Jim Coggins, Jim Russell, and Bob Bost; a capable outfield of Ray Hudson, Diz Owens, Tom Eaton, and Brack Bailey ; and a well balanced pitching- staff of Larry Sedberry, Roger Williams, Max Sherrill, Tommy Jamieson, Jim Coggins, and Larry Kiser. This fine Pfeiffer nine defeated such teams as Elon, The Citadel (2), Wofford, Williams College (2), Belmont Abbey (2), Guilford (2), Atlantic Christian (2), and Shaw Air Force Base (2). With the nucleus of last year ' s team returning, plus some very promising freshmen, this year ' s team could possibly reach the same heights as last year. MR. CROSS COUNTRY Row 1— Don White, Cecil Byrd, Phil Clark. Row 2- Jim Dixon, George Conger, Wayne Smith. Cross-country is one of the minor sports on the Pfeiffer campus. Few people on campus knew of its exist- ence until Coach George Melton is- sued several calls for interested per- sons. If cross-country is so remote from the sports ' limelight, what mo- tivates these young men to partici- pate in such an activity? Participa- tion in this sport alone can create within oneself stamina, and a feeling of satisfaction from the achievement of a difficult task. George Conger, Wayne Smith, Jim Dixon, Don White, Roger Collins, Phil Clark, Cecil Byrd, and Jim Blakeney answered Coach Melton ' s call and participated in most of the matches with Wake Forest, Pem- broke, U.N.C., and in the State Meet in Raleigh. Inexperience proved to be the Panthers biggest drawback in the early part of the season but as the season progressed our road runners began to run more as a unit with a promise of a bright future forecasted for them. SOCCER Soccer, one of Pfeiffer ' s newest sports, was added to the sports agenda this fall. Even though most of the players had never played this sport before, Coach J. A. Needy made rapid progress, and within a period of several weeks had a team of men who lacked experience but had plenty of hustle. Their first game was against last year ' s Virginia State Champions, Lynchburg College, who beat the Pfeiffer team 8-0. The Panthers showed plenty of determination and fight. The final game of the season with Davidson climaxed the season. Pfeiffer held the heavily-favored Wildcats to one goal the first half and finally ended the game behind 3-0. With 22 returning lettermen, the Pfeiffer soccer team next vear should be a big threat. ; r - MR. Coach Wallace Martin ' s grapp ling Panthers came roaring into the season full of scrap and will to win. This was the second year of wrestling as a real sport at Pfeiffer. All except two members from last year ' s team returned and showed that one year of experi- ence is very profitable. Enthusiasm was built up by means of assembly programs, which explained the essentials and a few of the finer points of the sport to the students. Many new faces were added to the growing list of men who wrestle. Wayne Smith, Ron Carrouth, and Al Capehart were a big help in their first year. Help was given these men by the veterans: Coy Plott, Dave Nichols, Jim Griffith, Milton Barden, and Glenn Wellborn. MR. GOLF As spring arrives a young man ' s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love, but in the case of the Pfeiffer golfers this love is GOLF. On many after- noons the golf team can be seen practicing and play- ing at the Stanly County Country Club. And why not — with a 9 and 2 standing last year. A lot of prac- tice will be required to beat this record. Last year the team was composed of Bill Walters, Jennings House, Bobby Lisk, Bobby Baucom, Ray Krimminger and Jim Ray. Two victories were posted over each of these colleges: High Point, Catawba, Oak Ridge, and Belmont Abbey. One victory and one loss went to Guilford and one loss went to Wake Forest. The average score for the Pfeiffer team was 75, only three over par. It might be noted that the Pfeiffer team beat Guilford, who was the North State Conference Champions. The prospects for a good team this year are bright in spite of the loss of Bobby Lisk and Jen- nings House. Two freshmen, Jack Masich and George Skomsky, will fill these vacancies. Last year Pfeiffer was well represented in the Southern Intercollegiate Golf Tournament held in Athens, Georgia. With another good year the team hopes to again compete with the top teams of the south. This is their goal. A fine swing ... a long drive • . «AV i I PFEIFFER BUILDING PROGRAM In the past year Pfeiffer Col- lege has made tremendous strides in development, improvement, and enlargement through its building program. Completed during this past year have been an estimated $670,000 Science Building, a sewage disposal plant, a renovation of attic space into a new floor in the Administration Building, additions to the dining hall, and new classroom and office facilities on the ground floor of Goode Hall. This same spirit of expansion can be sensed in the plans for pro- posed buildings to be erected in the near future. Included in this program are plans for a Student Center, which will house an in- firmary, a kitchen, dining rooms, and an auditorium which will seat one thousand students. Dormitory expansions in the form of new wings to be added on Rowe and Merner and a new dormitory for men will offer facilities for ac- commodating an increase of two hundred boarding students. A faculty apartment building with twelve units will house members of Pfeiffer ' s rapidly growing fac- ulty. New homes are planned for construction for those new fac- ulty members with families. The Pfeiffer Board of Trustees has also approved plans for the enlargement of Mitchell Gymna- sium and the addition of a swim- ming pool and other facilities to the Gym, in addition to the con- struction of a permanent stadium at the baseball diamond. Thus the building program of Pfeiffer College offers a glimpse of the Pfeiffer of Tomorrow, an institution which endeavors to progress as the need for an educa- tional opportunities for the young people of the world increases with the intellectual demands of an ever-growing world. 138 Oh, that towering feeling . . . They open the door into another world, the world of the Chimes. It has its own appearance — desks and tables littered with paper, rulers, pencil stubs, negatives, ancient typewriters, and a cluttered floor where the debris has fallen. In one corner are stacks of annuals from many years and many universities. The mainstay of the whole work, the dummy, covered with smudgy finger- prints, is scattered about the desk, giving evidence of hours of hard work. The typists are pounding away — one thought going through their minds, the deadline. The business manager is taking care of the financial part. Previous weeks have been spent making pictures — accompan- ied by such comment as: What a creepy thing to wear for a pic- ture. This is awful! I demand a retake! Finally all work is completed and in the hands of the printer. Whew — time to settle back and wait for the completed product of our efforts. Now the staff presents to you the 1958 Chimes hoping that these pages will provide a framework for your memories to cling to.
