J. LEM STOKES, II . To the one whose foresight, faith and cour- age has made possible our being the first graduating class of Pfeiffer College, we offer our heartfelt thanks. Coming to Pfeiffer in the same year that this year’s graduates came, Dr. Stokes has shared with us our problems, our disap- pointments, our joys, and our achievements. It is he who gave impetus to and carried forward the dream of Pfeiffer as a four- year college. Our President, along with the kind and friendly First Lady of the Campus, has been an inspiration during these years as we have sought an education and a founda- tion for a useful and dedicated life. Without hesitation and with pride we offer our appreciation and affection with the dedication of THE CHIMES OF 1957. 7 B 0 A R D C) F T R u STEFS P f e i f f e r c o I 1 e g c 19 5 7 OFFICERS OF THE BOARD MRS. FALL a time of vibrant color, of breathtaking beauty as nature changes its costume — a time of the dying of leaves, of the exodus of birds back to their southern habitats — night. a time of Orientation Week, with the tests, the talent night, the registration and scheduling of classes, the President’s reception — a time for the gaiety and excitement of the Harvest Dance, the first formal dance of the year — a time of beginning a new life, of making new friends, of facing a new challenge as we step forward into this year of college life. 10 yam . . . a time of stillness, of quietness, and of seeming lack of life in the world of nature — . . . a time of rest while bulbs and seeds lie dormant underneath the frost and occasionally snow-covered earth — . . . a time of the happy abandon of getting ready for Christmas holidays — . . . a time of examinations, of beginning the second semester, high- lighted by the Washington Ball and the presentation of George and Martha Washington — . . a time of growth and maturity as students settle down to the more serious aspects of college life, of the evidence of progress in indi- vidual and group living. . . . SPRING J Jr g J x.4y S( y' a time of the budding of trees, of the bursting forth of color in shrubs and flowers, of the singing of birds as they wind their way back to this fair land — a time of happiness and joy, of a resurgence of vitality and new life, of new ideas and new ideals, of a rededication of self to the higher things of life as we hear again the Easter story — a time of development as students come to have a greater capacity, for some their first rung in the ladder of a college education — a time of graduation, with its co-mingling of joy and sorrow, of remembrance and anticipation, of that moment of reaching the goal toward which we have been working during all these happy seasons at Pfeiffer College. The program of the College, which so often is taken as a matter of course by the students, is the result of days, months, and years of planning and hard work on the part of the administration of the College. As the College has grown in other ways, so has its administrative personnel been increased. Always it is a privilege and a pleasure to add to our list of leaders per- sons with enthusiasm and a desire to be of service. With a ready welcome to students, for consultations or friendly chats, these whose hands guide our destiny are found also at the top of our list of friends. DR. PAUL M. WHEELER Academic Dean; Assistant to KENNETH D. HOLSHOUSER Dean of Students; Director of Admissions MARY E. BETHEA Dean of Women MR. W. HEATH WILLIAMS Business Manager MR. NICHOLAS E. LEFKO Director of Athletics and Work Program DR. CAMERON WEST Director of Teacher Placement Many and varied are the duties of the administrative per- sonnel of our College. The gamut of these duties runs from being responsible for seeing that the public is conscious of what is happening at Pfeiffer, to seeing that each student on the work program does his job well. Also along the line of duties is the task of assisting future teachers to meet the requirements and to find schools in which to teach. A favorite and oft-repeated phase of our school life is made possible through the efforts of one who, along with his helpers, secures and makes available the books and mag- azines required for the parallel work which is so much a DR. G. NELSON MOORE Director of Public Belations A n d o f A1 n m n i A f fa i rs 20 I Administration part of the student’s life. Our lovely library is made also serviceable be- cause of the work of those assigned to this phase of the administration. To live and learn in a Christian atmosphere is a privilege for which Pfeiffer students can thank our most conscientious Director of Religious Life. Not only is she concerned about the total religious program of the College, she always has time for a personal chat or a wise word of advice. These, along with the faculty members, have as their primary aim serv- ing those of us who are the recipients of their consideration, support, and love. MISS MARY F. Each student is a vital part of the Student Government Association, for he must practice the policies set up by the va- rious committees. This organization is responsible for regulation of matters of conduct of the stu- dents of Pfeiffer College. Pfeiffer campus is a laboratory for democratic living. To help each student have an appreciation for and an understanding of a democratic society is one of the aims of the Student Government Association. Officers of the Student Government Association are elected by the members of the student body. These officers include a President, Vice-Presi- dent, Secretary, Treasurer, four members from 28 overnment the senior class, three members from the junior class, two mem- bers from the sophomore class, and one member from the fresh- man class. A high scholastic average is required of these officers. Any matter pertaining to members of the Association becomes a concern of the Student Council. Acting as a connecting link be- tween the students and the administration, faculty, and staff, the Council seeks to bring about a cohesion of these groups. It also strives to foster in the individual a better understanding of the obligations and responsibilities of college life. The Judicial Committee within the Student Council has the responsibility of action in case of violations of the rules and regulations of the College. The members of the committee are President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Student Council, and one representative each from the senior, junior, and sophomore classes. Each year the Student Council lends its assistance to the publica- tion of a handbook of detailed information concerning college life. Seated: K. D. He was always concerned that every- thing possible be done for the best interests of Pfeiffer College. Faculty, staff, and students who had the privilege of knowing him will always hold in high esteem the memory of John B. Among them this year is added the standard class ring. Believing that a college class ring is a lasting symbol of the college itself, the first graduating class of Pfeiffer College (1957), with the approval of the Administration and the Board of Trustees, has adopted a standard ring that will become characteristic of Pfeiffer College graduation. The rings are made of 10K yellow gold with antique gold finish, the only exception being that girls may choose white gold if they so desire. The ring is made with a double-roll edge and hammered shank. On one side of the shank appears a full front and side view of the Henry Pfeiffer Chapel, which is centrally located on the campus and significantly outstanding in the memories of Pfeiffer students. Surrounding the Chapel is a background of oak leaves, symbolizing sturdiness. The date of graduation is blocked on this shank of the ring, just below the Chapel. The College seal appears on the other side of the shank. The letters “R,” “S,” “M,” and “P” appearing on the cross back of the crest in the seal stand for the four phases of training which students of Pfeiffer College receive during their years at the College—Religious, Social, Mental, and Physical. The background surrounding the seal is of laurel leaves which represent victory. Blocked beneath the seal is the degree which the student is receiving, either A.B. or B.S. All rings contain a genuine black onyx stone, chosen because of the College colors, black and gold. Inscribed in the gold around the stone are the name of the College and the date of its found- ing as a small boarding school near Lenoir, North Carolina — PFEIFFER COLLEGE — 1885. Keith Slothower Director F ootlights Pfeiffer Playmakers thrilled audiences with four outstanding performances this year. Beginning the season was the English drama ‘‘The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde. Starring as Mr. John Worthing was Bob Grubbs and as Mr. Algerson Moncrieff, Jack Nunn. Supporting roles were carried by Anne Eckerson, Gerry Hamilton, Selvev Johnson, and others. In December the tremendous performance of Herman Wouk’s “The Caine Mutiny Colorful Musical, OKLA- HOMA! Starring: Jerry Thomas as Curley; Janelle Byerly as Laurey. CAINE MUTINY COURT-MARTIAL Starring: Bill Henderson as Lieutenant Greenwald, Charles Stonestreet as Lieuten- ant Maryk, Tom Howell as Lieutenant Keefer, Bob Burnette as Captain Blakely, Steve Childers as Signalman Third Class LTrban, Ken Byerly as Captain Southard, Jimmy Gray as Stenographer, Bob Grubbs as Captain Quegg, Rusty McCall as Lieuten- ant Commander Challee. Court-Martial” fascinated a spell-bound audience. Once again Bob Grubbs was star- red, this time as Lieutenant-Commander Philip Quegg. Outstanding performances were also given by Bill Henderson as Lieu- tenant Barney Greenwald, and Ralph Mc- Call as Lieutenant Commander John Challee. These were supported by a large, capable, all-male cast. The February production of Rogers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” was released by special contract to Pfeiffer Playmakers. This, one of America’s greatest musical plays, featured Janelle Byerly as Laurey, Jerry Thomas as Curley, Neal Smith as Will Parker, and Nancy Kimrey as Aunt Eller. An excellent cast supported these players. “Antigone,” a modern adaptation of the Greek Classic, was presented in March. One-act productions by students in the play production class were an interesting innova- tion in this year’s drama program. MISS SUE YARBROUUII Assistant Director WILBUR T. Even before school opened in the fall, their active and creative minds had come forth with the theme and format with which the staff has worked. “Can I have a re-take? This picture is awful” . . . “Where do we get a list of the members of the Sun Dial?” . . . “Can we put one more picture on that page?” . . . “What word can I use in this sentence?” . . . These and many other questions, comments, and sighs could be heard for days from the CHIMES room as the staff struggled desperately to meet a deadline. Finally all copy was written, all pictures assembled, all art work drawn, and all typing done. The dummy was in the hands of the printer. With a sigh of re- lief, the staff settled back eagerly awaiting the re- turn of the completed product of their thoughts and efforts. Meanwhile, Ronnie and his crew had not been idle. They had be°n diligently seeking advertising man- agers and selling ads so that the CHIMES could come out on top financially. Now, it is with pride that we present to you the 1957 CHIMES, hoping that these pages will help to keep alive for many years the memories of life on Pfeiffer campus—just what they portray. .19 5 7 ANNE FRANCK Associate Editor Seated: Shirley Huddleston, Jim Griffith, Ronnie Jenkins, Richard Chappie, George Johnson, Rita Shumaker, Linda Briggs, Hazel Correll. This year’s seniors remember nostalgically and wistfully their first year when every student knew each of the other 175 students by name, when meals were served family style, and when registration took only a short while. They re- member also—but not so pleasantly—having to go to the Administration Building to use the one telephone on the campus, climbing stairs to the small library, and getting their mail “loose” in the dormitory living rooms. Perhaps the most outstanding event of that year was the memorable day when the Board of Trus- tees voted to make Pfeiffer a full four-year col- lege. The following fall, 1954, when the sophomores arrived, they not only discovered that they were grossly outnumbered by freshmen, but they dis- covered new buildings that had been erected and new procedures that had been inaugurated to take care of the 325 students enrolled. Jane Freeman was now filled with men students, for the faculty was housed in the lovely new apartment building. A cafeteria counter had been installed, since all students could no longer be served simultaneously. Faculty families were en- joying new homes located on the east of the campus and facing the highway. This was the year when sophomores who had expected to have to bid farewell as they graduat- ed from Pfeiffer Junior College could look for- ward to returning to their beloved school for the completion of their college education. Another tremendous increase in enrollment oc- curred in the fall of 1955, with over 500 students standing in long registration lines. Expansion in facilities included two men's dormitories across the highway, more faculty homes, an apartment building for married students, a new boiler room, and countless renovations. Jane Freeman Hall and Cline Hall put on feminine characteristics as women students now claimed these dormitories as their home. It was during this year that the lovely and effi- cient Merner Library was converted from the for- mer industrial arts building. Progress Individual post office boxes, telephones in every dormitory and office, new administration offices, additional laundry equipment, and a redecorated recreation center also were tangible evidences of Pfeiffer’s growth. During the spring of 1956, a campaign was launched to match a $750,000 grant from the Gustavus and Louise Pfeiffer Research Founda- tion. The successful completion of this Develop- ment Fund Campaign brought to Pfeiffer College more than $1,500,000. This could not have been possible without the interest, assistance, and sup- port of Pfeiffer’s many friends in Stanly County and elsewhere. To them we extend our heartfelt thanks. 1956! The first senior class . . . Practice teaching . . . Religious education field work . . . More and more faculty members with Ph.D. degrees . . . All these are signs of Pfeiffer College’s stupend- ous, colossal advance into senior college rank. This year, with over 700 students enrolled, the third men’s dormitory was erected, completing the quadrangle across the highway. This left Washington Hall for women students. Construc- tion was underway for the half-million dollar science building, also on the south side of the campus. May, 1957, witnessed a historical event in the story of Pfeiffer College, when, for the first time, students were awarded A.B. and B.S. degrees. Yes, Pfeiffer College has grown tremendously during the past four years—in value of buildings and land, in the number of faculty and staff mem- bers, in student body enrollment, and in intercol- legiate participation and prestige. But much more meaningful and important has been the expan- sion and growth within the minds and hearts of those who have lived, worked and struggled through this period of turbulance, inconvenien- ces, and excitement. As we have been a vital part of a steady journey forward, we have found our- selves maturing and increasing “in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and man.’’ Because we have had a very real part in the de- velopment of Pfeiffer College thus far, we shall always feel a keen sense of interest in and con- cern for its future growth and service to Chris- tian higher education in the years that lie ahead. 122 • . . three new dormitories for men — Foote, Plyler.
