Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1948 volume:

N ' Vv, I] - «Wlif-, It is with mixed emotions that we greet the end of this, our last year at Pfeiffer. Hopefully, eagerly, we look towards the future and its promises; sorrowfully at the pas!:, rich with its me 11 ow i ng memor ies. As a final tribute and as an inspiration to the sophomores, we have compiled this book. It is our hope that we have been able to leave in this book memories that will not fade with time. May the appreciation of high ideals, faith, knowledge, and the memories we have acquired during the last two years at Pfeiffer, be symbolized in this year’s PaJaCa. emoncwi FABIO RIVAS Born in Chaparro, Oriente, Cuba, November 1 1, 1927. Died at Pfeiffer Junior College, Misenheimer, N. C., January 8, 1948. Buried in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Misenhei- mer, N. C. He sleeps beneath the shadow of the clouds, careless alike of sunshine or storm, in the win- dowless palace of rest. Our friend and college mate loved us and was beloved by all. In his three years in this country he acquired a fluent use of our language and a love of the American way of life. He planned to remain in America, to become a permanent citizen. Sociable and adaptable, fond of sports and enthusiastic in college activities and spirit, he leaves a vacancy and deep regret in the hearts of all who knew him. With his mother and his sister, Alicia, we grieve for our companion. Life is ever Lord of death And Love can never lose its own. To Mrs. Jesse Cruse, affectionately known as Mrs. Vera , we dedicate this year’s PaJaCa. She came to Pfeiffer with our class and through these past two years has become a very close friend to all of us. By sharing our joys, sorrows, our successes, and failures, she has won a place in our hearts. By dedicating to her this yearbook, we give to her a remembrance of the class of ’48. We, the Pfeiffer student body, will always hold in our hearts the memory of Mrs. Vera . Chi M. Waggoner President Vale To The Sophomores When you pick up this PuJaC, twenty- five years from now and idly leaf through it, I hope you will recall the pleasant time you have had at Pfeiffer. Though we have not always agreed on everything, we have had some good times together. Come back to Pfeiffer often. Sincerely, Chi M. Waggoner Mrs. V. D. Batten Registrar Van G. On the out- skirts of this tranquil little village there is situated the sturdy, well-built home of 6964 and 6969. Down in cell block 3, thirty feet below the sur- face of the earth, we listen in on the conversation of these two sterling O wards of the public. Just imagine, 6969, here it is June, 1968, in just three more days we will be as free as the birds. I just can’t wait to see all my old college inmates, oops, pardon me, I mean chums. Since you mentioned it, 6964, I just received a copy of the Pfeiffer News and it tells all about our former classmates. Here, settle back and re- lax and leave that hacksaw alone for a few minutes and I’ll read you a few of these gems of knowledge. Miss Celeste Knox has accepted a position at Pfeiffer as head dieti- tian. 'Mac Biddle has retired after many years as a boatswain on a fishing boat out of Wilmington, N. C. Jimmie King, Tommy Ridenhour and Bill Cline have formed a hill- billy band in Jonhson City, Tennes- see. Their little troupe is in great de- mand at quilting parties and Ladies’ Aid Societies. Cecil Sedberry, Bill Hinson and Melvin Howell, all outstanding his- tory students in 1947 are still pursu- ing their favorite subject. They have just published another book based on the early American frontier life; it is called The Congress of Alt. Croggin. Bob Russell has returned to his job as dance instructor at Vassar after spending his vacation with friends in Misenheimer. Bill Stuart, after years of success as gleeman for the Golden Grain Hit Parade has returned to his first love, basketweaving, and is now working towards his Ph.D. at Harvard. Head football coach of Alabama’s Crimson Tide , Glen Gale, has com- pleted his 9th successful year there. Noted politician, Wayne Mabry, will be a good bet as next governor of North Carolina if he can prove his innocence in the Empty Stocking Fund fraud. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Rodermund are still happily married and now reside in Watauga County, N. C., where Bob is foreman of a thriving Kraut factory. Bill Barber is now operating a Ton so rial College in Athens, Georgia. C. B. Gray has been re-elected president of the Acme Lonely Hearts Club: headquarters in Butte, Mon- tana. ’Throaty vocalist, Mome Simpson, is still singing the Blues in Club El Lobo, Rampart Street, New Orleans. Phil Martin has just won another coyeted safety award for logging 1000 accidentless hours on Pfeiffer’s Farmall Cub. Bob Redwine, noted horse trader and orator, has just been appointed Secretary of Agriculture. Robert (Cotton) Williamson, yersatile heavyweight wrestler, has been carrying the torch for a certain Cuban for such a long time that he has been mentioned to take over the Statue of Liberty’s duties when she goes on vacation. Red Mashburn, noted Hollywood producer and owner of Mashburn’s Hollywood Vanities, has just return- ed to his winter home at Miami Beach. Caridad Bravo and Georeina Bernal are teaching English at the LTniversity of Havana. David Dennis was presented in a piano recital at Pfeiffer recently. His musical ability was outstanding and the whole audience thrilled to his rendition of Hagerstown Hanging in E. Minor. Ben Courts, popular sophomore at P. J. C, has returned to take over duties as head lawn mower, mechan- ic, and Assistant Postmaster. Scrooge Mabry is now teaching Geometry and Chemistry at Mass. Institute of Technology. Gene Yevich and Carl Ternoskv are touring the U. S. giving interest- ing lectures on Plantation Life in the Old South. Clarence Tapp, world champion four cushion billiard player, is de- fending his title for the 14th time at Cleveland, Ohio, this week. Jonnie James is head lion tamer with Ringling Bros. Circus. They say o j j it’s those hypnotic eyes. L. B. Eller was last seen peddling orchids and roses on a street corner in Karachi, India. Bill Goodman and Paul Taylor are working in Belk’s Bargain Base- ment. Weehawken, N. J. Genial Bill is in charge of the Book Sales Dept., ♦ 36 + whereas Paul looks good in Women s Ready-to-Wear. June Reece and Ruth McKibbin, noted for their wonderful newspaper work while at Pfeiffer, are now sell- ing the Charlotte Observer on vari- ous street corners in Gastonia. June just won another Pogo stick for sell- ing the most newspapers during the month of April. Delma Jordan, owner of Jordan’s Garage and Used Car Lot, now has Ray Treece, Doctor of Motors, as chief mechanic. Ed Bailey, renowned crusader against Pepsi-Colas and hot sauce, has succeeded in banning these com- modities from Misenheimer, after a struggle which began in 1946. Jean Alspaugh and Pepsi Mit- chell are still at P. J. C, and their wonderful work as house mothers of Rowe and Merner has made them boon companions of all students con- cerned. Joyce Cannon and Doris Tant are teaching at Paw Creek, N. C., High School. Joyce is also coach of the girls’ basketball team. Warren Bethel and Richard Fowl- er, walking haberdasheries while at Pfeiffer, have turned their clothes savy into cash. They now own and operate The Little Joe Overall factory in Laredo, Texas. Margaret Juboor has returned from Tibet having served a hitch there as missionary to the Outer- Mongolian tribe. Clynton Ratliff is still doing ex- cellent work as U. S. Secretary of Treasury. Ed Boone, and E. H. Morton have just sold a patent for a bottle collect- ing machine. They conceived the idea for this while at Pfeiffer. They are expected to make millions by this stroke of genius. Well, buddy, that’s just about all the news that would be of interest. I’m glad ol’ Dave Bennett sent us this copy of the News, but I never thought he would have stayed all these years assistant librarian at P. J. C.” Oh, but it does this heart of mine good to hear those names again. Thanks for reading to me, 6969, and by the way, speaking of names, it won’t be long until we shall again re- sume our places in society and hear our names called once more. Buck Rader and Red Bennett. My, but that sounds good! Well, good-night, 6969.” Good-night to you, 6964, and sweet dreams. We hereby appoint Miss Patty Petty, our class sponsor, executrix of this, our Last Will and Testament. In witness whereof, we do set our hand and seal, this 1st day of June, 1948. Doris Tant, Testator Witnesses: Bill Stuart Bill Woodruff + 41 + That memorable day in September, 1946, was bright and gay as we 213 green but die-hard freshmen passed through the portals of ole P. J. C. But the looks on our faces were far from bright and gay. Rather, they were ones of anxiety and uncertainty as we placed unsteady feet on the ground that was to be our home for at least nine long months. Entrance exams were our first con- cern, but closely following them came the Presidents Reception, a gala event which began our social activi- ties for the year. At the first meeting of this great freshman class, Harold McGee was elected president, Richard Fowler, vice-president, Lucille Hall, secretary, and Tommy Ridenhour, treasurer. With these officers we started out on our first college year. Sadie Hawkin’s Day, the Harvest and Christmas Dances, the Washing- ton Ball, and May Day all added fes- tivity to the year. But our scholastic standing remained high, as evidenced by the fifteen members pledged into the Phi Theta Kappa and the thirteen who were tapped for Order of the Sundial. Then, finally came June with the end of our freshman year; and only fourteen short weeks until once again we became Pfeifferites. As we became what is commonly known as sophisticated sopho- mores”, we elected Buckley Rader to lead us, with Tommy Ridenhour, Ava Caudle, and B. C. Trexler as vice- president, secretary, and treasurer, re- spectively. With these leaders we, though only 126 in number, banned together and planned big things— freshman initiation, a bigger Harvest Dance, and extremely successful Sadie Hawkin’s Day. The extended Thanksgiving holi- day was another big event in that ’47-”48 year — and the Christmas Dance, which followed soon after- wards — the Washington Ball again — May Day — and, finally, gradu- ation. Thus, we the class of ”48 left our alma mater with flying colors —- left with many fond memories of two wonderful years spent at ole P. J. C. 4 42 4 Si '' FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS Claude McKinney . .
