Jjtsitorp of Pfeiffer Junior College Pfeiffer Junior College is located at Misenheimer, North Caro- lina, on U. S. highway No. 52, nineteen miles southeast of Salisbury and fifty-six miles northeast of Charlotte. The school is under the management of the Woman's Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Its original establishment was under the direction of Miss Emily Pruden who selected Lenoir as its location. Mrs. Mitchell donated the money for the school which was named in memory of her step-son. Ebenezer Mitchell, who had been a soldier in the War between the States. After a fire in 1903, the school was moved to the present location of Misen- heimer. In 1914a fire destroyed the main building necessitating the use of Cline Hall, formerly a boys’ domitory, for classrooms and as a dormitory for girls. The boys found rooms in the village. The same year the high school, which had begun in 1910, was accredited by the state department. In 1938 the National Board of Trustees au- thorized the addition of two years of higher education. Gradually the lower grades were abandoned, and efforts concentrated on college work and the last two years of high school. Thus developed the present Junior College, which early in 19 34 was given full recogni- tion by the State Department of Public Instruction as an accredited standard institution. Five modern brick buildings, the gift of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pfeiffer, were erected during the spring and summer of 1 935. In August of that year, the name of the school was changed to Pfeiffer Junior College, honoring those who made possible the greater expan- sion of the school. Other gifts from the Pfeiffers, in 1936 and 19 37. made possible the remodelling of the Administration Building and the erection of a modern science hall. In 1938 the high school was definitely discontinued and the entire work and effort of the institution devoted to the Junior College. I see in my mind s eve a hundred freshmen entering college. We were green, no doubt, but eager to learn Our Class President was Peter Suite!) Vice-President. Walter Wall: Secretary. I homas Bivens; I reasurer. Shirley Dunn anti our sponsors were Miss Sirvher and Miss Edgerton. We submitted, in tun. to the inevitable initiation the second week alter our arrival on the campus. Shy and bashful girls went about daily tasks with hair in paper curlers and without the usual bloom on their faces, while the boys were highly rouged. It almost seem.d like being at a carnival the night we wore dunce caps to dinner and tried to eat square m.als, with the excep- tion ol the dessert which was handed over to a near-by upper classman. 1 or a week we bowed when speaking to Sophomores and on request shined their shoes Initiation ended with a Sopho- more-Freshman picnic at the Mill Pond. Alter this and a series ol Prep meetings we tell that we were really a part of the college. Ours was the hrst class to enjoy the alluring atmosphere ol the remodeled Administration building which was dedicated November. 1936. I he f reshman-Sophomore picnic at Richie s l ake came as a climax to our I reshman year Another summer having past, we returned to accept a dignity we had been awaiting. I bis dignity, too. was marked by a seriousness of purpose we had not felt before. In our freshman year the excitement of college life kept us from really getting down to work for a while, but the second year we realized the importance ol our work, and the lact that we were examples for the school, inspired us to be our best—for ourselves and lor Pfeiffer. To lead us through this all-important year, we chose as our President. Harry Mint Jr.; Vice-President, E. 1 . Cline. Jr : Secretary. Doris Holler; and Treasurer. Virginia Kluttz: with Miss Spencer and Mr. Con boy as sponsors. As a group we were strengthened by class meetings, especially the one in which we chose as our motto: Climb Though The Rocks Be Rugged. We elected as Class Poet. Sue Nell Holladay; Prophet. Eva Jane I reeman; Testator. Dora Gene Martin: Historian. Bonnie Elliott: and Giftorian. James Ray Clark Wilbur Hart and Clvde Greene were the authors of th: class song. Eor our class colors we selected green and white, with the fern and the white rose as our floral emblem. In the closing months of our college life there were many events that will always be pleasantly remembered. The musical concerts, the.Glee Club trips, Sophomore Day. the Class Play, and the All-School Banquet, with their memorable moments, all will live long in our hearts. Nor could we forget class night, the Baccalaureate sermon and Commencement which although filled with joy and sadness, strangely warmed our hearts. We. the Sophomore Class, dreamed ol publishing an annual and by work and cooperation of students, faculty, and friends our dreams were realized Our stay at Pfeiffer was a guiding light that gave us courage, and made us finer men and women. As we go into schools of higher learning, and into the different walks of life, may we always be so upright and sincere in our work that Pfeiffer will be proud of us as we are proud of her—always keeping in mind our motto: Climb Though The Rocks Be Rugged.’ Page Tu'enty BONNIE ETLIOTT Class Historian Jfresfjman Class Officers Biondi Lilly Vernon John Lilly . ACKNOWLEDGMENT After many months of arduous toil and wholehearted effort the 10 38 PaJaCa is at last a reality. The success of this year book and the continued publication of similar PaJaCa’s trom year to year depends entirely upon the approval you give it. It is our sincere hope that our efforts have not been in vain. Only inadequately can we thank those who have assisted in the preparation of the PaJaCa. To each person who has contributed anything, we extend our appreciation. To our printers, photographer, and advertisers we wish to say a sincere “ I hank You.” —THE STAFF.
