The Bulls had an outstanding year in footbalb compiling an impressive 7-3 record and ending the year tied for the runner-up spot in district 1 1-3A. Pe witt displayed one of the most tenacious defenses in the district, holding many opponents scoreless while also holding many teams to double-digit yardage Hgures. The offense would not be outdone, howeven as it rolled up impressive yardage numbers as well as high point totals behind a superb offensive line as well as a powerful back Held Pewitt was only outdone by district champion Daingerheld in the all-district picks, as quarterback Artis Whetstone, running back Marcell Lewis, and tackle Lance Shepherd received first team honors on offense while also receiving second team defensive honors. Tght end jeff Riner, guard Marty Munkres, and running back lames Boyd were chosen as second team offensive members. Anthony johnson also received Hrs! team defensive recognition while lerome lones was chosen for the second team. But the Brahmas played a very hard game. HOMECOMING Conf. - ACTION Pep Squad Beau 2 1 Pe witt 's Varsity Brahma basketball team, coa ched b y Ron Sha w, finished the 1984-85 season with a 9- 19 record. In district action, the Bulls came up with a 4-10 slate. In predistrict action the Bulls participated in the Queen City, Pewitt and Hooks tournaments. Taking the consolation title in Queen City, the Bulls lost the third place title to Clarksville in Hooks and the consolation title to jefferson at Pewitt. The Bulls defea ted DeKalb, North Lamar, and Mt. Vernon in district play. The team was made up of four seniors - james Boyd Scott Thomas, Mark Munkres, Roy Hillis and five juniors - Rhonda Williams, Artis Whetstone, jeff Riner, Marcel Lewis, and Todd Henson. Boyd made the all-district tirst team and Thomas the second. Whetstone received Honorable Mention. The junior Varsity took the District Title with a 7-1 record. The Bulls lost only to Clarks ville in the district race but came ba ck to demolish the Tigers on the second try. The team consisted of Tracy Ranes, Anthony Whetstone, Charles Warren, Asa jiles, Charlie Douglas, Scott Turner, and Steven Luttrell. Ranes led the team in scoring with 14.46 points per game. Mtn only three players returning with varsity experience, Coach jerry Dockan had his work cut out for him. Soliciting help from the freshman and sophomore classes, returning Senior Lori Tomberlain, junior jessie Green and Sophomore Paula johnson put together a 7- 17 record. Though the record does not show many wins, the team had some near losses, such as losing to A vinger 33-38, 23-25, and 22-24. Also the Brahmaettes lost to Daingertield by two and four points in games that went into overtime. Pewitt's team competed in the Queen City, Hooks, and Pewitt tournaments, takinga third place trophy at Hooks. Pewitt Hnished district competition with a 4- 10 slate. johnson, averaging 15.86 points per game, earned the title of Sophomore ofthe Year in District 11-3A. Early in the yean the Brahmas were cut to ten players but still managed one ofthe best finishes that a Pe witt baseball team has ever had in District pla y as well as earning consolation trophies in two tournaments. Several members of the Brahma squad received All District honors and were very deserving in their efforts. Senior Marty Munkres was chosen as a Hrst team Hrst baseman while lohn Meade was selected to first team outfield Second team members included senior Kurt Hall at the pitching spot and lohn Clayton receiving honors at third base. Todd Henson and l.C Anderson were given honorable mention awards for their steady play at second base and shortstop. BULLS' PLACE 5th IN STATE The Paul Pewitt Powerlifting team of 1985 reached a plateau that not many Brahma teams of the past have been able to obtain. Led by Anthony lohnson, Reginald King, and Michael Mason, the Bulls Hnished5th in the state of Texas at the State Powerlifting Meet held in Austin. The season was a glittering one that saw the ironmen bring home numerous team and individual awards including a third place team finish in the East Texas Regional. Anthony lohnson established new school records in the squat at 555 lbs., in total weght lifted at 1450 lbs., and a new school and state record in the deadlift at 610 lbs. Reginald King placed 5th in state competition, while Michael Mason nailed down 4th place honors. Three lovely young ladies were crowned as sweethearts in pre-game ceremonies. Presented as eighth grade football sweetheart was Miss Kim Ross. Escorted by Thelvin Hawkins, Kim received a crown, carnations, and a football. Because of a tie-vote, two band sweethearts were selected. Brandi C offe y and Shelley Stevens were the honored ones. Carlo Sciara escorted Miss Stevens and Miss Coffey was escorted by leremy Craig.
